"Brother Liu, what you're saying is getting more and more ridiculous. Have you been watching too many detective movies?" Master Xiao said dismissively.
For a cultivator, being greedy for small gains or skirting the edges is one thing, but if it comes to taking a life, that's no laughing matter. So Master Xiao's concerns were quite reasonable.
Liu Bi steadied himself and said, "You might not believe it, but I think it's possible."
I nodded in agreement and added, "It is possible. Master Chen definitely wouldn't harm anyone himself, but his motley crew of disciples might not be so scrupulous. People like them are capable of anything."
Upon hearing this, Master Xiao quickly stood up and said, "If that's the case, then this matter is indeed difficult to manage. Let's not concern ourselves with that female ghost anymore."
I nodded again and said, "As long as they don't set their sights on Liu Bi's Soul-keeping Umbrella, I won't meddle further."
In this era, those who have nothing to lose are fearless. If they are willing to kill for souls, I truly lack the ability to contend with them. In this comfortable age, who isn't afraid of losing their life?
...
Even though I didn't want to stir up trouble, trouble still found me. Not long after finishing my conversation with Master Xiao and the others and just as I was about to head out for dinner, my phone rang again.
It was an unfamiliar number. Upon answering, I realized it was Wang calling. The first thing he said was, "I don't believe you can keep that evil spirit by your side all year round. I don't believe you never go out."
"What do you want?" I asked calmly.
Wang continued his threats: "Hand over the umbrella to my master, and this matter will be settled. Otherwise, don’t expect to find peace in Guangzhou."
"Dream on." With that, I hung up the phone.
Master Xiao asked me what was wrong, and I replied that it was nothing. They still wanted Liu Bi's umbrella.
After I hung up the phone, it rang again. I pressed the button to decline, but it called back. I continued to decline. In my heart, I was very reluctant to deal with Wang and his group of social misfits; there really wasn't much humanity in their world.
Once I arrived at the restaurant, thinking about changing my phone number tomorrow, I received a text message. The content was simple yet left me feeling helpless: my personal information, including my name, ID number, and home address.
When I received that text, I knew things were going to get serious. They knew my license plate number, and finding my information would be a piece of cake for them.
When Master Xiao saw that text message, he slammed the table and said, "Damn it, they are going too far. Let's take action."
"What do you mean?" I asked in confusion.
"Expose their soul-harvesting murders and let the law punish them," Master Xiao said angrily.
"Do you have any evidence?"
"Well... evidence can be gathered," Master Xiao said, scratching his head as his voice grew quieter.
Taking advantage of the moment when the dishes were being served, I called Master Hu. I asked him if Master Chen had instructed his disciples to kill for soul-harvesting purposes, could I organize some senior members of our field to confront him or even deal with him?
Master Hu replied, "Xiao Liu, you shouldn't speak so lightly about this; it's not a trivial matter."
I chuckled and said, "No, I'm just saying hypothetically."
Master Hu continued, "If you have evidence proving that Master Chen has indeed done such things, then you can inform others in the field. He will be expelled from our community. No one will want to associate with him."
"Is that all? Won't his sect punish him?" I pressed on.
Master Hu replied, "As far as I know, Master Chen left his sect long ago, back in his middle age. If you have enough evidence, you could send him to prison, but it's difficult to find concrete proof in such matters."
I responded with a simple, "Okay, Master Hu, thank you. I understand."
Master Hu asked with concern, "Xiao Liu, if it's not absolutely necessary, don't confront Master Chen. He has a group of unruly thugs under him who never play by the rules."
I nodded and thanked Master Hu again before hanging up the phone.
After the call ended, Master Xiao was already enjoying his meal. Seeing my worried expression, he comforted me in a soothing tone, "It's fine, Brother Liu. In a society governed by law, what are you afraid of? Worst case scenario, you just die."
"You really know how to comfort someone," I said, setting aside my troubles and starting to eat seriously.
...
After finishing my meal and returning home, I turned on the lights and found Liu Bi sitting on the sofa in a daze. Just as I was about to ask why it hadn't gone out, another message from Wang came through. The gist of it was: Don't think that just because you know some Daoist Techniques I can't do anything about you. You'd better stay at home; be careful not to get hit by a car when you go out.
Seeing that message made me genuinely angry. Once I calmed down, I replied: Don't be like this; we're all trying to make a living in society. Let's talk things over properly. I'll think about this matter and get back to you tomorrow.
After putting my phone away, I asked Liu Bi, "If I give you a rough location, can you sense where Wang is specifically?"
Liu Bi nodded and said, "Of course. I just possessed him not long ago; he still has some of my residual Yin Qi on him. As long as I have a general idea of the location, finding him won't be difficult."
I nodded and took out my phone to call Sister Li, asking for the doctor's phone number.
After getting the doctor's phone number, I dialed it directly. After identifying myself, my first question was whether he knew where Wang lived.
At first, the doctor was reluctant to say anything, claiming he didn't know. It wasn't until I threatened him, saying I would haunt him for life, that he finally revealed Wang's address. He assured me repeatedly that he wouldn't tell anyone else. Of course, I didn't ask for too many details; just a general location would suffice so he wouldn't have to worry too much.
In fact, the relationship between the doctor and Wang wasn't very good. Their previous conversations made it clear that it was purely a matter of mutual benefit, with no friendship involved. So extracting a rough address from him was quite simple.
After hanging up, I said to Liu Bi, "Let's go find Wang later. It's better to take the initiative to solve the problem than wait for trouble to come knocking."
Master Xiao perked up at this and quickly said, "What are we waiting for? Let's go now!"
I replied that it was still too early; what if there were still many people around Wang? It would be better to wait until around two or three in the morning when there should be fewer people nearby. I needed to borrow a car from a neighbor first, then we could rest a bit before heading out.
Master Xiao acknowledged this and went into the study to play games. He was full of energy and found it hard to sleep with things weighing on his mind. Liu Bi nodded and said it would come out when it looked ugly. As soon as the words left its mouth, it disappeared from the living room; I wasn't sure if it had gone out or returned to its umbrella to continue Nourishing the Soul.
After borrowing the car, I walked into my bedroom alone and lay on the bed. After thinking about things for a while, I fell asleep.
Around one in the morning, Master Xiao woke me up. I checked the time, got up, and dressed. Liu Bi was already waiting in the living room. Both Master Xiao and I tucked a fruit knife into our pockets just in case and washed our faces before heading out.
The night was dark and windy; it felt thrilling.
"You ghost! Why are you sitting in the passenger seat? Just lie quietly on the roof."
"I like it! I'm used to sitting on Brother Liu's right side; I can help keep an eye on the road. It was me who spotted Mr. Huang last time."
"Come on, stop bringing up that Mr. Huang. If you hadn't noticed him, would we be dealing with all this trouble now? I also like sitting in the passenger seat; what's wrong with that?"
“Rock Paper Scissors, best two out of three, let’s go.”
“Come on, I’m not afraid of you.”
...
What started as a serious matter turned into a childish game between these two clowns as they fought for the position of co-pilot. They kept getting the same results, and it took them over twenty rounds of Rock Paper Scissors to finally determine a winner. I was so frustrated I almost wanted to curse.
The ridiculous game ended with Liu Bi's victory, and it gleefully settled into the co-pilot seat. At that moment, it smugly declared, “Ha! Rock Paper Scissors, you’ll never win against me.” The implication was that it had some sort of cheating method, though I couldn’t figure out what it was.
“Damn you, Liu Bi,” Master Xiao grumbled from the back seat in dissatisfaction.
