Moments later, Meng Biao returned, holding a Cosmic Bag and said, "It's getting late; let's start preparing."
"Okay."
Everyone got up and began to make their preparations.
As they prepared, a problem arose. Everyone came from different sects, and their Methods of Feng Shui naturally varied. Each person wanted to use their sect's exclusive Method of Feng Shui, which led to another round of discussions. Eventually, they settled on a plan. They decided to work together to set up two formations, both of which belonged to the Daoist Forty-Nine Formations, so everyone was familiar with them.
The two formations were called the Twelve Capital Heavenly Gate Formation and the Five Elements Formation. The Five Elements Formation was for defense, while the Twelve Capital Heavenly Gate Formation was for offense. The reason for choosing these two formations to deal with the two Vengeful Spirits from the Red Sun Sect was that there were eight of us, making this combination balanced in both attack and defense.
First, regarding the Twelve Capital Heavenly Gate Formation, it was relatively simple to set up but required some intricate steps. Eight round wooden poles needed to be inserted into a circle formed by four other poles, following the directional standards of the Eight Gates. Each pole had to be placed on a layer of Cinnabar, a layer of lime, and a layer of Glutinous Rice. Red Cinnabar symbols had to be drawn on each wooden pole. The formation measured six meters by six meters, while each pole only needed to be three inches long, with two inches buried underground and one inch above ground.
This formation was primarily used against powerful Yin spirits. Many senior Daoist masters had previously employed this formation when facing high-level Yin spirits or ancient forest demons. However, this formation had a flaw: it lacked defensive capabilities. If something outside the formation interfered, it could easily affect those setting up the formation.
Therefore, we arranged a larger Five Elements Formation around it. The Five Elements Formation derived from the five elements—metal, wood, water, fire, and earth—arranged in a pentagram shape. Each corner required one person holding different elemental tools. They were connected by hemp ropes, with five protective talismans hanging between each pair of people. The colors of the talismans were red, yellow, white, black, and green. This setup created a powerful defensive formation.
Moreover, each of the five individuals had their own Hand Seals and incantations to assist the formation. These enhancements could weaken the Yin spirits within the formation and empower the tools and talismans held by those inside it, increasing their effectiveness significantly.
Additionally, the external Yin spirits could not interfere with those inside the formation because they perceived these five maintainers of the Five Elements Formation as formidable divine beasts while viewing another as the Supreme Old Lord.
Though it sounded complicated, setting everything up was quite straightforward. Our group completed both the Twelve Capital Heavenly Gate Formation and the Five Elements Formation in about half an hour.
Once the formations were set up, Master Xiao, Meng Biao, and Zhang Chuanzheng engaged in a struggle within the Twelve Capital Heavenly Gate Formation against the ghosts. Each wanted to showcase their prowess; however, in the end, Meng Biao and Master Xiao secured their positions.
Among us eight people, I along with Mao Ruiliang, Liu Zhiqiang, Zhang Chuanzheng, and Wang Xiaolu formed the Five Elements Formation. Master Xiao and Meng Biao tangled with the Vengeful Spirits in the Twelve Capital Heavenly Gate Formation while Zhou Hong undertook another equally important task.
The two formations required an oil lamp to maintain; as long as the lamp was lit, the formation would hold. If the lamp went out, the formation would be destroyed.
The wind on the mountain was strong, and if no one was watching the oil lamp, it could easily be extinguished by the gusts.
Zhou Hong directly used a tent to shield the oil lamp, crawling inside alongside it.
Once the formation was prepared, we each took our positions and began to meditate and rest, gathering our energy. The five people outside each had a talisman affixed to them, with five hemp ropes laid on the ground and covered with leaves. Master Xiao and Meng Biao sat in the center, each holding a Peach Wood Sword, quietly waiting for the Vengeful Spirits to arrive.
After about an hour of silence, just as impatience began to set in among us, two white figures suddenly appeared in the center of the formation. Our hemp ropes were tied around our elbows; if anyone pulled on theirs, those next to them would feel it. When the two white figures emerged within the formation, all five of us sensed it immediately. We stood up simultaneously, and the ropes adorned with five-colored talismans rose up, encircling the two White Shirt Wraiths along with Master Xiao and Meng Biao.
Indeed, there were only two of them, just as Zhou Hong had predicted. The attire of the two Spirit Gods was identical, with little distinction in their appearances.
After we stood up, the two wraiths glanced around. One of them addressed Meng Biao, saying, “You have quite a lot of nerve to come here.”
Meng Biao stood up with a cold expression and offered no reply. He lightly swung his Peach Wood Sword backward before charging at the White Shirt Wraith that had spoken to him.
“Damn it!” Master Xiao quickly stood up as well, grabbing his Peach Wood Sword and directing his gaze toward the other White Shirt Wraith.
At that moment, we five on the periphery began to form hand seals and chant spells. Instantly, various incantations filled the area like a cacophony of sacred sounds disrupting the minds of the two White Shirt Wraiths.
The two Vengeful Spirits hurriedly dodged away from Master Xiao and Meng Biao to regroup.
One of them surveyed their surroundings and spoke with a trembling voice: “The Four Divine Beasts and the Supreme Old Lord…”
“No, this is merely the Five Elements Formation,” said the other after a brief pause for thought. “We can’t leave for now; let’s deal with these two reckless youngsters first.”
Meng Biao and Master Xiao had no intention of giving them a chance to negotiate. As soon as they came together, Master Xiao and Meng Biao charged forward, wielding their Peach Wood Swords, chanting spells continuously, while their other hands waved talismans that rustled in the air.
It must be said that the two formations produced unexpected results. Initially, they lacked the strength to confront a Vengeful Spirit from the Red Sun Sect, but with the aid of these formations, they not only managed to entangle the Vengeful Spirit but also gained the upper hand.
The two humans and two spirits were engaged in a fierce battle within the formation, while the five outside chanted their spells repeatedly. In the end, as the Yin Qi of the two Vengeful Spirits diminished and their forms began to dissipate, Master Xiao and Meng Biao exerted their strength simultaneously. The sound of their Peach Wood Swords slicing through the air grew louder as their advantage increased.
After about four or five minutes, the two Vengeful Spirits were gradually losing ground. The one Meng Biao was dealing with fell to the ground with a single strike. As he finished his incantation to slay the spirit, without any hesitation, he pulled out a small object resembling a Peach Wood Stake from his bag and plunged it into the back of the White-Clad Vengeful Spirit. The spirit then dissipated into thin air.
Turning to Master Xiao's side, he had somehow acquired a small bell in his left hand. The clear ringing sound echoed as the already exhausted Vengeful Spirit suddenly halted its attack, standing there dazed. Master Xiao hunched over and stealthily approached, slapping two Soul Fixation Talismans onto the White-Clad Vengeful Spirit. The spirit trembled and then stood still, its arms and head drooping, no longer making any attempts to attack.
This was a tactic we had discussed beforehand: kill one and leave one alive for questioning. After all, we were still unclear about the situation inside the cave. If we could extract specific information about the Human Cave and the number of spirits from this White Shirt Wraith, it would make our next steps much easier.
With the spirit immobilized by Master Xiao's spell, Meng Biao took large strides to pick up five colored flags he had placed nearby. He circled them around the spirit and then cast a Soul Binding Spell. At this point, everything seemed to settle down.
We untied our ropes and gathered closer together. Meng Biao tore off the Soul Fixation Talismans from the White Shirt Wraith, just as Zhou Hong emerged from the tent.
The moment the Soul Fixation Talismans were removed, it instinctively tried to flee. However, the five flags moved on their own without any wind, preventing the White Shirt Wraith from moving even an inch. It turned its head to look at us and said, "You have some nerve to disrupt my Red Sun Sect's affairs."
Mao Ruiliang stepped forward and said, "Your Red Sun Sect has long been destroyed. Why are you still so loyal even after becoming a ghost?"
"Nonsense! The green mountains remain unchanged; my Red Sun Sect will endure forever," replied the White Shirt Wraith as it realized escape was impossible and decided to engage in conversation with us.
"Endure my foot! Enough with your nonsense—quickly tell us how many spirits are in that Human Cave. Are there still any bastards from your Red Sun Sect?" Master Xiao demanded arrogantly, his tone dripping with bravado.
The Vengeful Spirit paused for a moment before responding, "Are you sent by the Grandmaster to collect those spirits? Has our plan been set in motion? You are all members of the sect, aren't you? Were you just testing our loyalty?"
"What nonsense about being a disciple of the teachings? We are here to help those poor souls find peace. Are you going to speak or not?" Master Xiao raised the Peach Wood Sword in his hand.
The Vengeful Spirit's expression turned cold after hearing Master Xiao's words. "Since I won't speak, there's nothing more to say. I will not betray my teachings. Even if you don't pursue me, the Supreme Commander will not let me go."
"Since you won't talk, then you can die." Meng Biao suddenly raised his hand and slammed the Great Seal in his grasp towards the Vengeful Spirit's Fontanel.
I quickly shouted, "Wait!" But it was too late. Meng Biao didn't hold back upon hearing my words and directly smashed the spirit, causing its Soul to Shatter. Afterward, Meng Biao pursed his lips and said, "There's nothing to wait for; it won't speak now."
"Meng Biao, I hope you can be less impulsive in situations like this in the future," Mao Ruiliang said. Perhaps he thought that the Vengeful Spirit still had some value for questioning.
Meng Biao put away the Peach Wood Sword and the five-colored flag planted in the ground, saying, "Your indecisiveness is your own business, but don't expect me to be indecisive as well. I, as a Mao Shan Disciple, cannot do that." After finishing his words, he walked aside and began to tidy up his things.
"What is the Supreme Commander?" I asked Zhou Hong.
