I chuckled lightly and said to Meng Biao, "Brother Meng, I was just suspicious of you earlier, but since you say it wasn't you, I believe you. It's just that this incident won't happen for no reason."
Meng Biao snorted coldly and chose not to respond.
Mao Ruiliang awkwardly smiled and said, "Junior Brother Liu, Meng Biao is indeed innocent. When we discovered the many Yin spirits in this area, we had already agreed not to disperse them. Meng Biao was standing right next to me; I saw it clearly."
I nodded and replied, "I understand. However, Brother Meng, when those brothers from the Quanzhen Sect arrive later, you need to temper your temper a bit..."
"Brother Liu, look! The wild boar is dead!" Just as I began to speak, Master Xiao's voice came from afar.
I turned to see Master Xiao and Qiu Leyu returning. Master Xiao walked on one side, holding several wooden sticks in his hands. Qiu Leyu and the others had managed to lift the wild boar onto their shoulders with three sticks arranged vertically and horizontally.
"These guys are really impressive," Zhou Hong praised sincerely.
I quickly turned to Meng Biao and said, "Brother Meng, please don't be too impulsive. The White-haired Yin Spirit you dispersed is an elder of their Longevity Sect. They already know about it."
As soon as I finished speaking, everyone froze for a moment before understanding what I meant by telling Meng Biao not to act rashly. Only Zhang Chuanzheng sarcastically remarked, "Liu X, are you slandering Brother Meng?"
I ignored him and walked directly towards Qiu Leyu and the others.
They slowly approached while carrying the wild boar. "Are you all alright, brothers?" I asked with concern.
"Haha, we're fine. It's just a wild boar; we practiced our skills on it for a bit. Let's go; there's a campfire over there where we can have a good meal. Those friends from the Zhengyi Sect probably haven't had meat in a long time either," Qiu Leyu said with a smile.
When we reached the campfire, they placed the wild boar about three meters away and each took out their daggers to start carving into the boar's carcass.
Qiu Leyu stepped forward and cupped his fists in greeting. "Brothers, I am Qiu Leyu from Longmen Sect. Meeting in this wilderness is also a kind of fate. Just now, we hunted two wild boars that were foolish enough to cross our path. We would like to borrow the campfire for a bit and invite everyone to enjoy some roasted wild boar."
Everyone stood up to return the greeting. Mao Ruiliang said, "Junior Brother Qiu, you are too polite. I am Mao Ruiliang from Qingwei Sect. Meeting is fate, and all of you are incredibly brave; I admire you."
The reason Mao Ruiliang referred to Qiu Leyu as junior brother was that Qiu Leyu appeared younger than him. Whether he truly was younger didn't matter much; unlike before, the distinctions between senior and junior were not so scrutinized anymore. Calling someone junior brother felt more intimate than simply referring to them as a fellow cultivator.
Seeing that they were going to roast a wild boar, Zhou Hong, Wang Xiaolu, and Liu Zhiqiang rushed over to help. Meanwhile, Meng Biao sat silently on the ground, seemingly unwelcoming towards the group from Quanzhen Sect. I couldn't understand why Meng Biao had such an attitude; they were helping out, yet he didn't even say thank you. His demeanor suggested that others owed him something.
"Junior Brother Qiu, why don't you sit down and take a break? The only lingering souls here are those attached to objects; we've already exorcised the rest," I said with a smile.
"You must be Meng Biao," Liu Hetian's voice came from behind me. I turned to see Liu Hetian standing right behind Meng Biao.
Meng Biao stood up and asked, "What do you want?"
"Of course," Liu Hetian replied without hesitation, throwing a punch at Meng Biao's head. The force knocked Meng Biao directly onto the grass.
Zhang Chuanzheng suddenly stood up and exclaimed, "Are you out of your mind? Why are you hitting people for no reason? Is this how all of you from Quanzhen Sect behave?"
Zhang Chuanzheng began his mocking again. After hearing his words, I thought it was over; how could this fool say anything? Was he really spoiled by Lingbao Sect?
Qiu Leyu's expression immediately darkened. He squinted at Zhang Chuanzheng and said, "Who are you? Say that again if you have the guts."
"I am Zhang Chuanzheng from Lingbao Sect. What gives you the right to hit people as soon as you arrive?" Zhang Chuanzheng continued.
I couldn't understand why Zhang Chuanzheng was acting so tough; he hadn't been this protective of Meng Biao before.
Meng Biao slowly got up from the ground and glared at Liu Hetian, saying, "You better give me a reasonable explanation."
"Haha, scum like you gets hit and still has the nerve to ask for an explanation. You think you're worthy?" Liu Hetian mocked. "And you—what's your name again? Zhang from Lingbao? If you don't watch your mouth, I'll help you tear it off."
Liu Hetian, a towering figure nearly six feet three inches tall with a broad back and strong build, was also a member of the Quanzhen Sect. If it came to a fight, even Meng Biao and Zhang Chuanzheng together would likely not stand a chance against him.
I quickly said, "Alright, Liu Shixiong, this is all a misunderstanding. Didn't we agree on this before coming?"
Liu Hetian's tone shifted as he chuckled, "Liu Shidi, if we hadn't agreed beforehand, Meng Biao wouldn't be able to stand right now. I'll give you face; let's roast some meat first. After we eat, Meng Biao will have to bow and apologize in front of my elder, Skeleton."
After Liu Hetian walked away, Meng Biao glanced at him and finally asked, "Liu X, what exactly is going on?"
Mao Ruiliang added, "Yeah, Liu Shidi, what happened? How did it escalate to a fight?"
"Qiu Shixiong, why don't you explain?" I looked at Qiu Leyu. Meng Biao and the others already didn't trust me; if I spoke up, they would likely doubt me even more. It was better for Qiu Leyu to take the lead.
Qiu Leyu said, "Wasn't it Liu Shidi who left a shadow spirit on him that Meng Biao dispersed?"
"I was the one who dispersed it. Liu X wanted to cheat in the competition using that shadow spirit; isn't it only right that I got rid of it? Besides, words alone don't prove anything; just because you're an elder doesn't mean you're above reproach," Meng Biao replied calmly.
Qiu Leyu's voice turned cold as he said, "Good. Very good." He turned and walked towards their backpacks. After a moment, he returned holding Skeleton wrapped in yellow cloth and a portrait. He respectfully placed the yellow cloth on the grass and unwrapped it to reveal a skeleton. "This is our elder's Skeleton."
After setting up the Skeleton, he approached Meng Biao with the portrait and asked, "Look closely; is this what the shadow spirit you dispersed looked like?"
Meng Biao casually glanced at it before taking the portrait in one hand and examining it closely for quite some time. Slowly, he walked towards the Skeleton.
We all watched him without intervening; his expression told us that the elder he had dispersed was indeed this one.
Meng Biao reached the Skeleton and suddenly knelt down on the ground. After bowing three times heavily, he said, "I'm sorry, Elder. It was my fault for not recognizing your greatness and offending you."
After apologizing to Corpse, he turned to Liu Hetian and deeply bowed again, saying, "I'm sorry; it was my mistake. Whatever punishment you deem fit, I will accept without complaint."
When it comes to Meng Biao, he may be somewhat arrogant, but he is clear about his grudges and grievances. In fact, what Liu Hetian and the others wanted was quite simple. Everyone knew that what had happened had already occurred, and no amount of attempts to make amends would change that. Moreover, since they were all cultivators, they understood very well that a sincere apology could quickly resolve the matter.
After Meng Biao apologized to Liu Hetian, he walked over to me and said, "Liu Shidi, I misunderstood you."
I chuckled lightly. "It's alright; I know your temperament. Sometimes, you can't just look at the surface of things, and you shouldn't be so impulsive. This applies to both people and spirits."
"What exactly happened, Liu Shidi?" Mao Ruiliang asked again.
As soon as Mao Ruiliang finished speaking, a few people who had been dealing with the wild boar came over. They had divided the boar into four parts and brought over a piece of hind leg meat. They set up a grill over the campfire and skewered the meat with a sharpened stick before placing it over the flames to roast.
Once everyone settled around the campfire, I began recounting the entire story from the beginning.
I started with my encounter with that Senior Master in the Human Cave and recounted every detail without missing a word. When I mentioned that the Senior Master had said our team was not peaceful, Meng Biao interjected, "That's right; that elder told me the same thing. But at that moment, I was so angry that I dismissed it entirely. However, after thinking it over carefully, I realized that this Senior Master wouldn't lie to me. And since it came from you, I naturally began to suspect you."
"So you're saying our team really isn't peaceful," Mao Ruiliang remarked after I finished my account.
We exchanged glances, each of us feeling a bit perplexed.
I nodded and said, "There must be something going on; I believe that Senior Master wouldn't deceive me. But I don't know who it is. Of course, I can't rule myself out either; anyone could have a reason to be suspected."
"I certainly have no reason to be suspected; I'm innocent," Zhang Chuanzheng chimed in after a long silence.
Master Xiao laughed heartily and said, "Haha! It's funny how you think you have no reason to be suspected."
"I have no motive," Zhang Chuanzheng replied.
Master Xiao continued to laugh and said, "If we're talking about motives, yours is the biggest! You're the weakest among us and suggested a competition out of fear of embarrassment; you even caused trouble and nearly drove us away. How can you say you have no motive?"
“Xiao, don't wrong the good people,” Zhang Chuanzheng stood up and shouted at Master Xiao.
Master Xiao, looking unfazed, replied, “Is that a threat? Are you looking for a fight?”
Seeing Master Xiao's response, Zhang Chuanzheng sat back down and said, “I really am not the troublemaker here.”
“Brother, I admire you,” Liu Hetian said with a smile, giving Master Xiao a thumbs up.
Mao Ruiliang then spoke up, “I suggest we cancel that competition. Liu Shidi, what do you think?”
The reason Mao Ruiliang asked for my opinion was that on the surface, Master Xiao, Wang Xiaolu, and I were all ranked at the top. So if we agreed, the others wouldn't have much to say.
“I certainly agree, but I believe what Senior Master said about the team being unstable isn't due to this competition,” I analyzed.
