Nervously glancing around at the bustling crowd, Wang Chao felt increasingly convinced that a ghost was lurking among them, ready to strike at any moment.
Seeing Wang Chao's tense demeanor, Jiang Liu tried to reassure him, suggesting he should relax a bit. However, Wang Chao retorted sharply.
"Relax? Have you forgotten that we almost got crushed by falling rebar from the rooftop? We could have ended up as skewers!"
At that moment, Wang Chao was unusually agitated; even when he had witnessed death firsthand before, he had never reacted this strongly. Jiang Liu could only continue to urge him to calm down, knowing that being upset wouldn't solve anything.
After some time spent comforting him, Wang Chao finally settled down. It was then that Jiang Liu asked why he had been so worked up.
"How can I not be agitated? We were the ones in danger this time; one careless moment could have meant death," Wang Chao replied indignantly. "If it were just me dying, I wouldn't be this angry. What infuriates me is that the ghost used such a sinister accident to harm us and even put others at risk."
Jiang Liu finally understood the source of Wang Chao's anger: it was not just about their own lives being endangered but also about how the ghost's actions had nearly led to the deaths of others. However, upon reflection, Jiang Liu thought that if this was the sole reason for his anger, then what about the previous incidents where others had been involved? It seemed a bit excessive to be upset solely for this reason.
Feeling puzzled, Jiang Liu asked Wang Chao again, but received an impatient response. Wang Chao clearly did not want to discuss this any further and shifted the topic. "Now that Jia Ren is dead, our leads have dried up. What should we do next?"
Noticing Wang Chao changing the subject, Jiang Liu tactfully followed along with his line of thought. "Next, we continue with our plan."
"Our plan?" Wang Chao asked in confusion. "What plan? When did we come up with a plan?"
"The one we discussed at the café initially. Our main task now is to find Jia Ren's diary, but it's not limited to just that. We need to pay attention to anything that's been kept for several years."
Jiang Liu appeared remarkably calm, showing none of the agitation one would expect after narrowly escaping death. This made Wang Chao feel slightly embarrassed about his earlier outburst while simultaneously admiring and being surprised by Jiang Liu's composure.
Wang Chao couldn't help but notice how much Jiang Liu had changed over time. From being slow to react initially to now quickly regaining his composure and formulating plans—this transformation left Wang Chao incredulous, especially considering how little time had passed. Even if Jiang Liu had experienced a few supernatural events before and adjusted his mindset accordingly, such a sudden change still caught him off guard.
Watching Jiang Liu calmly outline their next steps, Wang Chao couldn't help but ask, "Jiang Liu, don't you think you've changed a lot recently?"
Jiang Liu paused for a moment upon hearing Wang Chao's question and then asked in confusion, "What changes?"
"Something feels off, but the way you present yourself now is different from how you were at the beginning."
"What do you mean it's different?"
Jiang Liu didn't feel any change in himself, so he could only ask Wang Chao, who seemed to have noticed these changes.
Wang Chao hesitated, "I can't pinpoint exactly what's changed, but you seem calmer than before. Even after such a big incident just happened, you’re acting like it’s just another day."
Hearing this, Jiang Liu furrowed his brow slightly but quickly dismissed the strange feeling that had just arisen in his mind. He replied to Wang Chao, "As long as it's not heading in a bad direction, let's continue with what we were discussing."
"Oh, then go ahead."
Seeing that Jiang Liu himself didn’t care about the changes he had undergone, Wang Chao decided not to pry further. Just as Jiang Liu said, as long as things weren't going downhill, there was no need to waste time on trivial matters. What mattered most now was figuring out a way out of this supernatural incident.
"I suddenly thought of something that feels wrong."
Jiang Liu, who had been outlining their plan, abruptly stopped and turned to look at Wang Chao.
"Something wrong? Be specific."
Jiang Liu looked up at the blue sky, recalling the harrowing scene from earlier. "It's about the rebar that fell from the rooftop."
"Rebar?" Wang Chao looked confused. "Isn't that obvious? That accident was caused by a ghost trying to kill us."
"I'm not talking about the rebar itself; I'm referring to where it landed," Jiang Liu said, pulling his gaze away from the sky. "Do you remember where the rebar landed when it fell?"
Wang Chao recalled what he had seen earlier and uncertainly replied, "It should be where that police officer was standing."
"Exactly," Jiang Liu said seriously as he looked at Wang Chao. "I suddenly thought of a possibility."
"What possibility? Can you stop keeping me in suspense and just tell me?" Wang Chao urged.
"I guess the real purpose of that accident just now wasn't to kill us, but to kill that Middle-Aged Police Officer."
Jiang Liu offered his speculation. Wang Chao looked at him in confusion and repeated what Jiang Liu had just said, "So, you're saying that the ghost actually wanted to kill that police officer instead of the two of us?"
"Yes, that's right," Jiang Liu affirmed with a nod.
"You can't be serious," Wang Chao replied skeptically. "Don't forget that the accident happened when we were walking to Jia Ren's death site. If we hadn't gone there, this wouldn't have happened at all. And if you hadn't pushed us away in time, we would definitely be dead."
"Well, let's assume I hadn't pushed you away. Who do you think would have died in that accident?"
"Um..." Wang Chao recalled the scene from earlier and hesitated for a moment before saying, "It would probably be that police officer. The spot where the rebar fell was exactly where he was standing. But that doesn't mean the ghost didn't want to kill us."
"I know that, but what if? What if I hadn't pushed you away in time and that police officer got killed by the falling rebar? Have you thought about why the ghost would do something like that?"
"How would I know what didn't happen? Besides, it seems like we shouldn't be focusing on this right now."
Wang Chao urged Jiang Liu not to overthink it, but Jiang Liu seemed a bit anxious. "No, I need to figure out why. I have this feeling that it might be really important for us!"
With no way to calm Jiang Liu down, Wang Chao could only stand by and watch as Jiang Liu fell deeper into his own thoughts.
