Horror Chapter
In the following two days, everything seemed to return to calm. No one died suddenly, and the ominous feeling dissipated as if nothing had ever happened. The events did not unfold as Jiang Liu had anticipated; it was as though the curse in Classroom 000 had vanished.
Perhaps it was due to Jiang Liu's abrupt change in attitude that Wang Chao began to view him differently during these two days. Aside from necessary conversations, their interactions were no longer as harmonious as before. Although they still often gathered together, Wang Chao felt a subtle rift had formed between them.
As for Jiang Liu, he showed no signs of being affected by Wang Chao's deliberate distancing. He continued to attend classes calmly and would still converse with Wang Chao after school. If it weren't for the gruesome memories of the old man and Jia Ren haunting their dreams, they might have thought everything was merely a dream or that they had unintentionally solved a supernatural mystery.
When the school bell rang, the ever-impatient Wang Chao could no longer hold back and approached Jiang Liu with questions.
"Hey, Jiang Liu. It's already the third day, and nothing has happened as you said. Shouldn't we consider a different plan?"
From Wang Chao's words, Jiang Liu sensed his impatience. It wasn't hard to understand why Wang Chao appeared to be running out of patience; if things were not progressing as Jiang Liu had predicted, then these two days felt like a complete waste of time—meaningless time spent waiting.
Reflecting on these two peaceful days, a flicker of doubt crept into Jiang Liu's mind. He began to question whether his assumptions were correct. But if they weren't, why did everything feel so unnaturally calm? The tranquility unsettled him.
After pondering for a moment, Jiang Liu's tone softened from its earlier firmness. He conceded to Wang Chao, "It seems my guess was incorrect. Let's discuss what to do next on our way back."
Seeing Jiang Liu relent brought a sigh of relief to Wang Chao. He had feared that Jiang Liu would remain steadfast in his beliefs—stubbornly clinging to his views. So when he noticed Jiang Liu's willingness to reconsider, Wang Chao felt much lighter.
Once Jiang Liu agreed to discuss their next steps later, Wang Chao stopped pressing him and returned to his seat to pack up his books. However, while he was organizing his belongings, he suddenly sensed that today Jiang Liu seemed different—less cold than before.
But before he could think further, his phone vibrated in his pocket. Pulling it out, he saw an unfamiliar number flashing on the screen. With no recollection of it, he assumed it must be a call from a stranger and answered without much thought.
"Hello? Is this Comrade Wang Chao?"
The caller was male, his voice sounding somewhat weathered, likely in his thirties or forties. There was an official tone in his speech.
Wang Chao felt puzzled upon hearing the voice; it sounded vaguely familiar yet he couldn't place it until the man continued speaking.
"Yes, this is Wang Chao. Who are you?"
"I am the police officer you saved three days ago."
It turned out that the call came from the middle-aged police officer who had let two people go during Jia Ren's death. Wang Chao felt relieved; no wonder the voice sounded somewhat familiar and carried a hint of official tone. This was the same middle-aged police officer who Jiang Liu had saved a few days ago. However, it had been three days since then—why was he only calling now?
Unable to figure it out, he asked, "Oh, I remember now, it's you, Officer. Is there something you need to tell us?"
"Not much, really. I just need you both to come to the police station."
"To the police station?" Wang Chao asked in confusion. "Is this about Jia Senior?"
"Well, yes and no," the middle-aged police officer replied ambiguously. "It's hard to explain over the phone; it’s better if you come in person."
"Alright then, we just finished school, so we'll head over right away," Wang Chao agreed.
At that moment, Jiang Liu, who had packed his books, noticed Wang Chao on the phone and initially planned to wait for him outside the classroom. However, Wang Chao waved him over. When Jiang Liu approached, Wang Chao hung up and said, "It was that officer you saved a few days ago."
"Is it him?" Jiang Liu's eyes brightened as he asked, "What did he want?"
"I don’t know; he just asked us to come to the police station," Wang Chao replied while looking at Jiang Liu. "Could it be what you speculated a few days ago?"
Jiang Liu pondered for a moment and asked, "Did you agree to go?"
"I did; we're heading there now."
"Alright then, let's go. Once we get there, everything will become clear."
Afterward, they didn’t return to their dormitory but left the campus directly and took a taxi to the police station. Upon arriving at the station, Jiang Liu was the first to step inside.
As soon as he entered, Jiang Liu saw the middle-aged police officer he had saved earlier talking on the phone in the lobby. Noticing that Jiang Liu and Wang Chao had arrived, the officer put down his phone and greeted them politely, "Good to see you both again."
"Likewise," they exchanged pleasantries before Jiang Liu got straight to the point. "Officer, did you call us here because of Jia Senior? Is there something suspicious about his death?"
"This isn't about that matter," the middle-aged police officer explained. "We have already concluded our investigation into Jia Senior's cause of death; it was an accident."
Jiang Liu had already anticipated the words of the Middle-Aged Police Officer. After all, Jia Ren had died due to a ghost in a supernatural incident, and such incidents possessed an independent and mysterious power beyond this world. Therefore, Jiang Liu knew that the police would likely handle Jia Ren's death as an accident. This was not due to the police being careless, but rather because of that strange supernatural force.
"Why did the officer call us over?"
The Middle-Aged Police Officer glanced at the others in the hall and then said, "This isn't a good place to talk. Let's go into the office."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Liu and Wang Chao exchanged glances but did not oppose the Middle-Aged Police Officer's suggestion. They followed him into the office.
The officer's office was on the first floor, and after a few turns, they arrived at a door. The Middle-Aged Police Officer opened it and gestured for them to enter. Without hesitation, they walked inside, but just as they stepped in, the officer did not follow them; instead, he closed the door behind them.
Initially startled, both of them thought something was wrong. However, before they could knock on the door to ask what was going on, a voice suddenly came from behind them.
"Hello, nice to meet you."
Realizing there was someone else in the room, they turned around to find a young woman standing there.
"Who are you? What do you want with us?" Wang Chao asked, looking at the young woman.
The young woman was very beautiful and wore a pair of hip-hop glasses. Judging by her appearance, she seemed to be on par with the female celebrities they had seen on television. Wang Chao's keen eyes noticed that her clothes were from prestigious brands, and she exuded a unique aura.
This aura was unmistakable; it was as different as that of a wealthy person compared to a beggar on the street. Thus, upon seeing her for the first time, they realized that this woman was different from them and likely belonged to high society.
The woman looked at them gracefully and said, "My name is Autumn Rain. I'm here to give you something from my husband."
"What is it?" Jiang Liu asked in confusion.
"It's something my husband asked me to give you. As for what it is, I don't know," she replied, pointing to a gift box placed on the table.
Her words left both of them thoroughly puzzled. They swore they had never encountered anyone like her in their lives over the past decade or so, let alone her husband. A man who could marry someone like her must be extraordinarily wealthy; how could two boys who had never been out in society meet someone like that?
"Who is your husband?" Jiang Liu continued to inquire.
"My husband is Jia Ren, Mr. Jia, whom you met a few days ago," the woman said flatly.
However, this statement shocked the two men. It was at that moment they realized that Jia Ren had such a beautiful wife, and judging by her appearance, Jia Ren might be quite wealthy. But as they thought about it, they recalled their first impression of Jia Ren and found that he did not seem like a rich man at all. Could it be that their experiences were too limited?
But the woman did not give them time to ponder. She continued, "I brought you what you needed; just take it and leave."
"Um, ma'am, I’d like to ask why you are giving us this? Shouldn't it belong to you?"
Jiang Liu tried to ask more questions but was cut off by the woman: "This is what my husband instructed me to do. I'm just following orders. Take the items and leave quickly."
Jiang Liu was reluctant to let it go and wanted to ask more questions when suddenly, a Middle-Aged Police Officer entered through the door, smiling at the two men. "Comrades, it's getting late; let me escort you out."
Seeing this scene, the two men knew they had no choice but to leave now. Reluctantly, they picked up the box from the table and followed the Middle-Aged Police Officer out of the police station.
As Middle-Aged Police Officer led Jiang Liu and Wang Chao out of the station, the woman who had been sitting in the chair removed her hip-hop glasses, revealing bloodshot eyes. Her previously elegant expression turned into one of ferocity.
She looked around the empty room and let out a piercing scream filled with immense fear.
"Jia Ren, I’ve done as you asked; please let me go. Don’t torment me any longer."
The quiet room remained silent, her anguished cries echoing within its walls.
