Horror Chapter
At the moment Jiang Liu saw the shadowy figure, his mind seemed to freeze, leaving him momentarily dazed.
Wang Chao, who had suddenly appeared, also noticed someone blocking the way ahead. Instantly on guard, he squinted his eyes and peered into the dim light toward the figure in front.
To his surprise, he realized that the figure was Jiang Liu. A look of joy spread across his face as he was about to ask where Jiang Liu had been just moments ago. However, he quickly noticed that after seeing him, Jiang Liu's expression had turned strange.
This peculiar expression made Wang Chao realize for the first time that a person could display so many emotions at once—fear mixed with disbelief and a hint of confusion. Yet no matter how he looked at it, he could not find the expected joy on Jiang Liu's face.
At that moment, he saw a figure standing behind Jiang Liu. The indistinct face of this figure felt oddly familiar, as if he had seen it somewhere before, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't recall where.
Meanwhile, Lin Feng opened the door but before he could take in the situation outside, Jiang Liu snapped back to reality and pulled him out, guiding him tightly against the white wall and moving toward the two Wang Chaos.
Lin Feng was puzzled by Jiang Liu's sudden actions and had no idea what he was trying to do.
Just as he was about to ask, he noticed figures standing in the corridors on both sides. Wang Chao stood motionless in front of the dormitory door. Turning to look to his right, Lin Feng's expression changed as disbelief washed over him at what he saw.
As Jiang Liu pulled Lin Feng closer to the wall, Wang Chao—who had been with Jiang Liu—was now illuminated by the dim light.
It was then that Wang Chao finally saw what the figure standing behind Jiang Liu looked like. At first, he felt confused; that face seemed eerily familiar. But then it hit him like a cold wave of realization.
The figure was none other than himself.
The same face, the same build; even their clothes were identical. If it weren't for the expressions on their faces—one filled with astonishment and the other completely expressionless—Wang Chao might have thought there was a giant mirror in front of him and that the person who looked just like him was merely a reflection.
The atmosphere around them fell into an absolute silence. After several seconds passed, Lin Feng was so frightened by this bizarre scene that he stuttered.
"Wh-what... how can there be two Wang Chaos?"
Jiang Liu kept glancing back and forth between the two Wang Chaos. After a long moment, he finally addressed the newly appeared Wang Chao: "Who are you?"
Wang Chao nervously stared at the other Wang Chao not far away, who exuded an eerie aura, then turned to Jiang Liu and replied, "I am Wang Chao."
Lin Feng looked at the Wang Chao on his left, fear evident in his voice. "You are Wang Chao, then who is that?"
He pointed at the other Wang Chao on the right, who had been silent. Just as they all turned to look at the quiet Wang Chao, something unexpected happened.
The silent Wang Chao suddenly vanished!
Seeing the sudden disappearance of the quiet Wang Chao shocked everyone. They quickly began to look around, trying to figure out where it had gone. However, the corridor was dark, severely limiting their visibility. After scanning the area, they still couldn't find where that Wang Chao had run off to.
At that moment, Jiang Liu realized that the Wang Chao who had been with him was a ghost in disguise. The thought of having a ghost following him sent chills down his spine, and he broke out in a cold sweat. Lin Feng was so frightened by this scene that his legs went weak, and he nearly collapsed, only saved from falling by Jiang Liu's support.
When Wang Chao saw another version of himself suddenly disappear, he quickly reacted and urged Jiang Liu, "We need to get out of here; it's not safe."
He started to move toward Jiang Liu but was halted by Jiang Liu's firm command: "Stop."
"What’s wrong?" Wang Chao asked, confused about why Jiang Liu had stopped him.
Jiang Liu stared intently at Wang Chao's face. "Even though one has already disappeared, I can't be sure you are the real Wang Chao and not another ghost in disguise."
Having realized that the Wang Chao who had been with him was a ghost impersonating him, Jiang Liu no longer trusted anyone. After all, if the Wang Chao who had been beside him could be swapped out without him noticing, how could he be sure that this newly appeared Wang Chao wasn't also a ghost?
Wang Chao anxiously explained, "I really am Wang Chao. Why don't you ask me a question to verify?"
Jiang Liu shook his head. "When I met you, we were already in this situation. The ghost might know what I know about you, so that won't prove you're really Wang Chao."
"Damn it, I've never encountered anything like this before," Wang Chao muttered under his breath and tossed the problem back to Jiang Liu. "So how should we prove it?"
Jiang Liu thought for a moment. "First tell me how you got here and what you've experienced."
Hearing this, Wang Chao recounted his encounter with another person impersonating Jiang Liu in the hallway. However, after listening to him, Jiang Liu's expression turned strange as he asked, "You also encountered someone who looks exactly like me? No wait, it was a ghost."
Wang Chao nodded affirmatively. "Yes, luckily I kept my wits about me and quickly realized that was a ghost in disguise, so I ran away. Otherwise, who knows where that ghost would have taken me."
"How did you know that ghost was fake?"
Wang Chao pointed to his shoes. "I told it my shoelace was loose, and it actually believed me."
Jiang Liu glanced at Wang Chao's shoes and noticed they had no laces. He remembered that Wang Chao had mentioned before that he was quite lazy and only bought slip-on shoes without laces, which made him believe Wang Chao's words were true.
Still feeling uneasy, he asked, "So how did you end up here? According to what you said earlier, you should have been below us."
Wang Chao shook his head. "I don't know. While I was running away, I just kept going in a panic. When I saw a corridor, I ran out of the stairwell. Not long after that, I saw you guys; you witnessed everything that happened afterward."
At this point, Jiang Liu had begun to trust Wang Chao's words. Reflecting back on their escape from the first floor, he recalled that Wang Chao had acted strangely quiet compared to his usual talkative self. At the time, he thought it was due to the eerie atmosphere of the dormitory and didn't think much of it.
Lin Feng tugged at Jiang Liu's sleeve and whispered, "Jiang Liu, what do we do now?"
Jiang Liu looked at Lin Feng and then at Wang Chao before finally gritting his teeth. "Let's first assume he's telling the truth. We need to get out of here."
Lin Feng had already come to see Jiang Liu as their leader, so upon hearing this, he fell silent and slowly walked toward Wang Chao.
