Wait a moment.
At that moment, Qian Lin seemed to suddenly realize something. He turned around and began to observe the surroundings of the elevator again. The interior of the elevator remained unchanged, just as it had been before, but this time Qian Lin felt that something was amiss.
He had been working at this company for nearly four years, so he had some familiarity with its operations. In his memory, the elevator he was currently riding in was quite old and had become worn over time; it couldn't possibly be as excessively clean as it appeared now.
Furrowing his brow, he touched the smooth walls around him. The cold sensation traveled through his fingers to his brain, and his calm expression was faintly reflected on the glossy surface of the walls.
What on earth is going on?
Qian Lin scrutinized the elevator carefully, and the sense of unfamiliarity grew stronger with each passing moment.
He didn’t recognize this elevator, or perhaps he had never ridden in it during his time at the company. For a veteran employee, this was simply impossible.
With that thought, a terrifying question arose.
If he had never seen this elevator before, then what was the elevator he was currently in?
The fear that had just subsided surged back like a tidal wave, and Qian Lin nervously swallowed hard. He cautiously pressed the button for the fifth floor, deciding to exit this elevator as soon as possible.
But just as he pressed the button, a horrifying scene unfolded before him.
Out of the corner of his eye, Qian Lin caught sight of his reflection on the smooth walls of the elevator—his face bore a chillingly strange smile.
Before Qian Lin could react, the lights in the elevator suddenly went out, plunging him into darkness.
As Qian Lin held the warm water in his hands, he looked at the three of them, particularly at Jiang Liu, who was frowning deeply. "I can't remember much about what happened afterward. By the time the elevator lights came on again, I was already on the first floor. Then I hurriedly called a cab to go home."
"After the lights went out, you don't remember anything at all?" Jiang Liu asked again.
"Yeah, not a thing. It's as if I inexplicably walked out of the elevator. I can't recall how I got out at all."
Seeing the puzzled expression on Qian Lin's face, Jiang Liu believed that Qian Lin wasn't hiding anything from him. He continued to ask, "Did you encounter any other strange occurrences after that?"
"Yes, after that incident, I noticed that it felt like someone was always following me, no matter where I was. Even when I was taking a shower, it felt like someone was watching me from a corner. It wasn't just me; my girlfriend felt the same way."
Zhao Jing nodded in agreement with Qian Lin's statement.
The elevator—once again, the place where the ghost appeared was in the elevator. Could it be a clue? Jiang Liu speculated silently in his mind.
"Master, did you think of something?"
Qian Lin and Zhao Jing watched Jiang Liu deep in thought and asked nervously.
"No, it's just that there are some things I can't quite figure out," Jiang Liu replied without revealing his inner doubts. Instead, he turned to Zhao Jing and asked, "Ms. Zhao, I have some questions for you."
"Go ahead."
"I heard that your recent encounter is related to a wedding dress. Earlier in the building, I heard your boyfriend Qian Lin mention that you seemed to have seen that wedding dress?"
"Yes, I've seen that wedding dress. Ever since it appeared in my house, strange things have been happening around my husband and me."
"Wait a minute, the wedding dress just suddenly appeared in your home?" Jiang Liu quickly seized on the key point.
"That's right. It was the morning after my husband came home. I opened the door and found a box at the entrance, and the wedding dress was inside it," Zhao Jing explained.
"What happened next? Where did you put the wedding dress?" Jiang Liu asked.
"I can't remember. All I know is that when I first saw the dress, I was so happy that I tried it on immediately. Later, when Qian Lin came back and told me what had happened at his company, we both got really scared. After that, some terrifying things started happening in our home. Eventually, we couldn't take it anymore and decided to call you; you know what happened next."
"What about the wedding dress? Do you remember where you put it?" The three of them looked at Zhao Jing nervously.
Zhao Jing thought for a moment and then shook her head in confusion. "I don't remember. With everything going on at home, my husband and I didn't pay attention to the dress."
"From what I heard from Qian Lin earlier, it seems like he has seen that wedding dress?" Jiang Liu pressed further.
Zhao Jing looked at Qian Lin in confusion. "You've seen the wedding dress?"
"Yeah, you showed it to me before. You even told me about it the night before; you saw a very beautiful wedding dress in a store," Qian Lin replied.
"Wait a second, what did you just say?" Jiang Liu abruptly interrupted Qian Lin.
"The night before everything happened, Zhao Jing mentioned to me that she had her eye on a wedding dress in a store. Then the next day, I saw her wearing one and thought she had bought it, so I didn't think much of it," Qian Lin explained.
Jiang Liu turned to Zhao Jing and asked, "Do you remember what happened with Qian Lin?"
"I remember," Zhao Jing nodded, recalling the night she saw that wedding dress. By the time she finished her story, it was already past ten o'clock.
Jiang Liu pinched the bridge of his nose and said to the two of them, "Let's leave it at that for now. It's getting late; you two should go rest."
Qian Lin wanted to insist that she wasn't tired, but it was clear to anyone that Jiang Liu had some things he wanted to say to the other two, so she said nothing more and helped Zhao Jing back to their room.
Once they returned to the room, Wang Chao asked, "Do you think they were lying?"
"I'm not sure," Qian Lin replied. "But based on the logic in their accounts, it seems like they weren't hiding anything. It's just that Qian Lin's experience in the elevator has me a bit concerned."
"What do you mean?"
"After the lights went out in the elevator, he inexplicably walked out. A ghost wouldn’t simply let him go like that. I feel like something must have happened after the lights went out; it's just that this memory has been erased by the ghost," Jiang Liu explained.
"That makes sense, but I'm more concerned about the dress shop Zhao Jing mentioned. The wedding dress we're looking for came from that shop, and from Zhao Jing's description, it doesn't seem like a normal dress shop at all."
Wang Chao sat on the sofa and poured himself a cup of hot water before asking Lin Mei Mei, "What do you think?"
Lin Mei Mei sat cross-legged on the sofa and glanced around the room. "The dress shop Zhao Jing encountered probably isn't related to our mission. After all, our task is simply to find the wedding dress."
"How is it irrelevant? You have to know that the wedding dress came from that boutique," Wang Chao said, surprised.
"I know, but what does it matter? The mission only requires us to find the wedding dress; it doesn't say we have to return it," Lin Mei Mei replied expressionlessly.
Wang Chao was at a loss for words, unsure how to counter Lin Mei Mei's statement. He turned his gaze toward the silent Jiang Liu, hoping he would say something.
Feeling Wang Chao's gaze, Jiang Liu took a sip of hot water and said, "I agree with Lin Mei Mei. Dream Sister told me before that to survive in supernatural events, the most important thing is to control your curiosity and not pay attention to things unrelated to the mission."
Seeing Jiang Liu siding with Lin Mei Mei, Wang Chao helplessly covered his forehead. "Why are you also like this?"
"Just speaking the truth," Jiang Liu joked lightly before turning to Lin Mei Mei. "Do you want to rest for a bit?"
At that moment, Lin Mei Mei felt a hint of drowsiness. She glanced at Qian Lin's room and asked Jiang Liu, "Where should I sleep?"
"If you don't mind, you can sleep on the sofa. Tonight, I'm on duty with Wang Chao," Jiang Liu replied.
Although the idea of someone watching her sleep made Lin Mei Mei feel a bit uncomfortable, she shrugged it off. She found a blanket in the living room and wrapped herself in it before drifting off to sleep.
At that moment, Wang Chao tossed a cigarette to Jiang Liu, signaling him to step outside for a smoke. Jiang Liu understood that Wang Chao had something he wanted to discuss and didn't refuse.
