"My Tenant is a Female Ghost" features a female ghost.
"Hey, what do you mean by that?" Ge Shui Lian looked at Bai Zhuo, who wore an unwilling expression, and questioned him.
"What I mean is exactly what you think!" Bai Zhuo raised his voice, stretching his neck as he looked at Ge Shui Lian with a disdainful expression.
Ge Shui Lian was furious. How could someone like Bai Zhuo, who was just a mere newcomer, dare to look down on her? She was not only a stunning beauty in her prime but also came from a well-off family. There were lines of admirers waiting to pursue her, so how could he even think of rejecting her?
Suddenly, an idea struck Ge Shui Lian. "Alright, Grandpa! Let Bai Shidi accompany me. Since he's free anyway, you can go ahead and be busy without worrying about me." Hmph! Just a newly initiated junior brother, and he dares to oppose me? I'll make sure to have some fun with him!
"Ah... Master, isn't that inappropriate?"
"Sigh~ Bai Zhuo, the competition is approaching, and I'm really busy. I've taken on a complicated task today. Your senior sister may not have as much experience as you, but she definitely knows more about the Yin Yang Realm than you do. You should learn from Shui Lian for now."
With that, Elder Ge pulled Bai Zhuo aside and said, "Bai Zhuo, Shui Lian has a sharp tongue but a soft heart. Don't take it too seriously. Please take good care of her." Elder Ge's tone was earnest, even carrying a hint of pleading. Bai Zhuo felt flattered and could only agree for the time being.
"…Master, I will… Where are you going?"
"Oh, a friend asked me to deal with some troublesome matters. Don't worry about it. By the way, feel free to browse the books in the study. Try to read more about ghost-catching techniques and talisman notes. If you have any questions, just ask Shui Lian, alright?"
"Yes, I understand, Master."
Elder Ge patted Bai Zhuo on the shoulder with a sigh and turned to the woman cleaning the shopfront. "Yun Chu, with Bai Zhuo accompanying Shui Lian outside, you don't need to worry. I won't be back today."
"Got it, Dad," Yun Chu replied.
Elder Ge went upstairs to grab some things and nodded at the man in the suit. "Let's go." The middle-aged man respectfully nodded back. "Thank you, Elder Ge. There will be generous rewards once the task is completed."
The middle-aged man led Elder Ge away while Ge Shui Lian turned to Bai Zhuo and asked sharply, "What did Grandpa say to you?"
"What's it to you?" Bai Zhuo replied and went upstairs.
"You..." Ge Shui Lian pointed at Bai Zhuo's back, too angry to say anything. A gentleman's revenge is never too late; I just hope you won't cry when the time comes, humph!
"Shui Lian, let's have lunch at home. I'm going out to buy groceries," Yun Chu said.
"Go ahead, Mom. I want sweet and sour ribs. Just cook for two; don't worry about that Bai person." It turned out this woman, Yun Chu, was indeed Yun Chu!
Yun Chu smiled lightly, unsure if she heard, and then left.
Elder Ge's study was filled with the scent of ink and paper. Three wooden bookshelves occupied a significant amount of space, and the desk was scattered with ordinary talismans, likely drawn by Ge Shui Lian.
Bai Zhuo glanced around quickly; there were many ancient books on the shelves that he had never seen before. "Dao Fu, Yellow Emperor's Yin Symbol Classic, Ghost Valley Master... so many books! Truly worthy of the Yin-Yang Family."
As Bai Zhuo rummaged through the shelves, suddenly an old, thick book caught his attention. It was a blue-covered manuscript with several large characters written in traditional Chinese calligraphy on the cover. The characters looked ancient but were clear and well-preserved.
"Ge Family Manuscript?" Just as Bai Zhuo curiously picked up the manuscript to flip through it, a yellow talisman fell out from between its pages. It seemed to be an ordinary blessing talisman; perhaps it had been stuck in the manuscript for so long that it appeared thin and fragile. The talisman fluttered a few times before landing beneath the bookshelf. Bai Zhuo closed the manuscript and crouched down to look under the shelf.
"Hey? There's another book here? How did it end up down here?" Bai Zhuo wondered aloud.
He reached out to retrieve both the book and the talisman. The book was a white-covered notebook, not very thick, with nothing written on its cover—just covered in dust. Bai Zhuo gently blew off the dust and was about to open it when he noticed a mark in the upper right corner of the book with his peripheral vision.
"What is this? Curse Seal?" Bai Zhuo exclaimed. "How could there be such a Curse Seal!" He touched the Curse Seal and felt a surge of vibrant spiritual energy ready to burst forth!
Unable to clearly see what kind of Curse Seal it was, Bai Zhuo hesitated to recklessly open the notebook. He stared at the white-covered book for a long time, thought carefully, and cautiously hid it away before opening the Ge Family Manuscript again, sitting at the desk and focusing intently on reading.
The contents of the book were written in brush script. The first part recorded many strange events from a hundred years ago—phenomena that science could not explain. Some events had been resolved while others remained unsolved. The second part documented all the demons and monsters that the Ge Family had encountered up to that point. The third part detailed the Curse Seals, spells, hand seals used by the Ge Family, as well as insights into Yin-Yang elements and divination techniques. Bai Zhuo knew that what was recorded in this book was one of the essences of the Ge Family!
Bai Zhuo became engrossed in reading and lost track of time until noon arrived.
Knock, knock, knock. The sound of knocking at the door jolted Bai Zhuo awake from his sea of books. He opened the door to find Yun Chu standing there. "You must be Bai Zhuo? It's already noon; come down for lunch."
"Ah? So soon?"
"Yes, let's go."
Suddenly, Ge Shui Lian popped out from behind Yun Chu. "Mom, why haven't you called him for lunch yet?"
"Ah! You are Yun Chu? I didn't notice this morning; I'm so sorry. Hello, Auntie." Bai Zhuo finally realized that the seemingly ordinary woman was indeed Yun Chu. In his mind, he had imagined Yun Chu to look much... younger and more vibrant.
In truth, Bai Zhuo wasn't particularly keen on having lunch with Ge Shui Lian, but considering her mother was present, he obediently sat down. The food prepared by Yun Mu was delicious, but Bai Zhuo couldn't stand Ge Shui Lian's sarcastic remarks. The meal was tasteless to him, and he hurriedly finished eating before retreating to Elder Ge's study to browse through the manuscripts.
The Ge Family Manuscript brought Bai Zhuo a wealth of knowledge, especially in the third section. Many things he had previously found confusing or unclear were answered in this book. Before he knew it, it was already past five in the afternoon when Ge Shui Lian knocked on the study door and shot him a glare. "Hey, Bai, let's go."
Bai Zhuo put down the manuscript and asked, "Go? Where to?"
"Why ask so many questions? We're going out to have fun!"
"But isn't it only ten o'clock at night? Why are we going now?"
"Oh wow, Bai, your hearing is pretty sharp; you can even hear what's going on in the phone from this far away?" Ge Shui Lian regarded Bai Zhuo with a hint of newfound respect, though it was only slight. "Enough chatter; let's go. Someone's treating us to dinner."
It seemed he couldn't escape this time; this woman was truly troublesome... Bai Zhuo cursed inwardly but still followed Ge Shui Lian downstairs.
"Mom, I'm going out to have fun; don't worry about me."
"Aren't you going to eat before you leave?"
"No thanks; a classmate is treating! Let's go, Bai."
"Goodbye, Auntie."
"Alright, come back early tonight."
Ding-a-ling! Ge Shui Lian opened the shop door and got into a white Maserati.
Bai Zhuo loved the sound of the wind chimes, their gentle tinkling always causing him a momentary distraction. This time was no exception—the sound was truly pleasant. Ge Shui Lian, however, was impatient. She rolled down the car window and shouted at Bai Zhuo, "Hey! Bai, are you coming or not?"
Snapped back to reality, Bai Zhuo hurried to catch up.
"Lian Lian, who is this person? So uncouth?" Before Bai Zhuo could get in, the woman in the driver's seat asked softly.
"Tsk, just a nobody. I don't know what my grandfather saw in him to take him as a disciple. He's my junior brother and insists on tagging along to broaden his horizons. Just ignore him," Ge Shui Lian replied with a cold laugh. Then she changed her tone and asked, "Lanlan, is Leng Xuanhe really coming tonight?"
"Of course! Why would I lie to you? The dinner tonight is hosted by Cold Young Master! If you don’t believe me, then don’t come!" Ning Lan teased. "Cold Young Master is handsome and rich, and he just happens to be from the Yin-Yang Family—perfect match for you. Without you as a competitor, it’ll be easy for me! Why don’t you let me have him?"
"Flirtatious Girl, get lost!"
Bai Zhuo got into the car, and Ning Lan glanced at the rearview mirror. She fell silent for a moment, a hint of disdain flashing in her eyes before she pressed the accelerator. The engine roared like thunder as they shot forward like lightning.
"Wow, that feels amazing! Lanlan, when can I borrow it?"
"Not a chance! If you want to drive, your family can buy one for you. It's just a two-million-dollar car."
"My family is poor; we can't afford it," Ge Shui Lian lamented.
Ning Lan scoffed, "Stop pretending! Who in Ningcheng doesn’t know about the Ge Family?"
"I’m not pretending! Can money and fame be equated? My uncle has some reputation in politics, but do you think he’s wealthy?"
Ning Lan thought about it and found it reasonable. "What about your grandfather? I’ve heard he’s quite an impressive Yin-Yang Master. He must charge a lot for his services!"
"My grandfather? He’s just an old man who follows the rules of his trade. He never charges extra and now that he’s older, he hardly takes on any work. How would he make money?"
Bai Zhuo was surprised to learn that Elder Ge was such a respectable person; this seemingly simple master had many admirable qualities worth learning from!
"Since my dad passed away, the house has felt like it’s missing a main pillar..." Ge Shui Lian sighed, thinking about how there was still Bai Zhuo, this 'outsider,' around, so she didn’t dwell on it further.
"By the way, I was in such a rush earlier that I didn’t greet Aunt Yun. Is she doing okay?" Ning Lanlan asked.
"She's just the same. Ever since my dad died, she’s become quiet and withdrawn, and she doesn’t even bother to dress up anymore, looking like a rural woman."
"Ah... Uncle Ge has been gone for almost ten years now..."
"Yeah, I can barely remember what my dad looked like. I wouldn’t mind at all if she remarried; Grandpa and Uncle are both supportive of it, but she just won’t listen."
Ning Lanlan was touched. "Aunt Yun really loved your dad. Even after more than ten years, she doesn’t seem to fear loneliness..."
"Hey, what nonsense are you talking about?" Ge Shui Lian said, slightly annoyed as she playfully hit Ning Lanlan for her comments about her mother.
"Ah, I’m driving! Don’t start hitting me... We’re almost there... Look, that Cayenne over there is Cold Young Master’s car. I told you I wasn’t lying!"
"Yes! Just as I expected from my best friend!" Ge Shui Lian exclaimed excitedly.
The two continued their animated conversation, completely ignoring the drowsy Bai Zhuo in the back seat.
