As the Fire Phoenix approached them, Miao Xiaoqi waved her hands at it like an old friend. The Fire Phoenix noticed her and flew directly toward her. The White Peacock at the bow instinctively stepped back, allowing the Fire Phoenix to land gracefully in front of Miao Xiaoqi.
This Fire Phoenix appeared much larger than an ordinary peacock. When it stood on the bow, the boat noticeably sank lower. Miao Xiaoqi lost her balance and swayed on the boat, prompting Bai Zhuo to reach out and steady her. Unexpectedly, the Fire Phoenix flared its tail feathers and let out a loud squawk like an overprotective rooster.
The crimson peacock spread its fiery tail, resembling bursts of flames that amazed everyone!
Miao Xiaoqi grasped Bai Zhuo's hand and said to the Fire Phoenix, "It's okay, Red! They are my friends! They are your friends too!"
Bai Zhuo asked curiously, "Red? Is that its name?"
"Yes, since it's crimson, I named it Red..." Miao Xiaoqi scratched her head shyly, clearly aware that she wasn't really qualified to name it. She gently parted the Fire Phoenix's feathers and pointed at a wound on its body. "Ten years ago, when I was six years old and Red was just a chick, he got injured and happened to meet me. Just then, the Fire Phoenix seemed to understand Bai Zhuo's words; it tilted its head and glared at him before letting out another loud squawk! The peacocks that had been crouching around immediately spread their wings at the command of the Fire Phoenix and rushed toward Bai Zhuo!
Dozens of peacocks surrounded Bai Zhuo. Startled, he stumbled and fell into the lake.
"Ah! Brother Bai!" Miao Xiaoqi shouted in concern. Fortunately, the water here wasn’t very deep; Bai Zhuo could barely breathe by standing on his tiptoes. Since he had some knowledge of swimming, he didn’t panic and quickly climbed back onto the boat. This incident reminded him of the Water-Repellent Pearl his grandfather wanted to give to his future granddaughter-in-law.
"Hahaha... that kid must have offended the phoenix just now and was punished by being thrown into the water!" The Boatman Uncle nearby explained with a laugh. "This phoenix is a true Phoenix; it's not like those ordinary peacocks!"
