My Tenant is a Female Ghost
After leaving the hospital, Bai Zhuo made numerous phone calls. Having been in a coma for over a month, he had missed many things and was now clearer about his goals.
One afternoon, a call from Ouyang Shirei led Bai Zhuo directly to Good Baby Orphanage—Ning Chen's car had been towed away right after his accident.
There was a saying that when a woman likes someone, she can be humble to the dust and then bloom like a flower. At that moment, Bai Zhuo felt just like that. Faced with Ouyang Shirei's reproach, he didn’t dare to resist at all, yet his heart was filled with joy.
"Bai, you can't do this anymore. I was really worried about you," Ouyang Shirei said in her room, holding Bai Zhuo's hands with concern. "Do you know how many calls I made in the past month? But they were all answered by Shui Lian, who kept saying you were out running errands. I don’t believe it; you must be hiding something from me."
Bai Zhuo couldn't help but sigh; women's intuition was indeed terrifying. He defended himself, "Sister Shirei, I'm back safe and sound, right? I’m not dead..."
"Bai Zhuo!" Ouyang Shirei suddenly shouted angrily, "What nonsense are you talking about?"
Bai Zhuo was taken aback by Ouyang Shirei's scolding and didn't know how to respond. But then he saw tears welling up in her beautiful eyes. He felt helpless and didn’t know what to do; he wanted to wipe away the tears at the corners of her eyes but feared being too forward, so he could only stare blankly as her crystalline tears slipped down her cheeks.
He suddenly felt lost.
Could it be that Sister Shirei liked him? No, no, she had always seen him as a younger brother. However, Ouyang Shirei's unexpected confession made Bai Zhuo's world blossom.
"Bai, I really can't hold it in anymore. I know you have feelings for me; actually, I've liked you for a long time too. But I'm already thirty years old and have been married before. You're only twenty-five or twenty-six; I'm not worthy of you. Still, I hope you stay safe... Please don’t make me worry anymore, okay?" Ouyang Shirei gazed into Bai Zhuo's eyes.
Happiness came so suddenly that it caught him off guard. The greatest joy in life is discovering that the person you like also likes you back.
Bai Zhuo took a deep breath. "I..."
At that moment, he wanted nothing more than to hold her tightly. He liked... no, he loved her. But what about Kagura Aoi? What about Ge Shui Lian? And what about the two-year agreement with Miao Xiaoqi?
"I..."
Bai Zhuo remained silent for a long time. Ouyang Shirei had no expectations that he would respond, yet deep inside her, she felt a subtle sense of loss. The two sat facing each other, enveloped in a quiet silence, while Bai Zhuo's heart was in turmoil.
It was Ouyang Shirei who broke the silence first. She wiped away the moisture from the corner of her eyes and forced a smile. "Bai, why don't you stay for dinner tonight? You haven't been here for over a month, and the kids have missed you. Also, thanks to Chairman Huang's support, we finally have a bit more leeway. We've hired two chefs, and the food is quite delicious. But if you're here, I’ll cook for you myself tonight!"
She stood up and walked towards the door. "Come on, Bai, let’s go see the kids."
As Bai Zhuo watched Ouyang Shirei's curvaceous figure walk away, he suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of illusion. He thought that if she stepped through that door, the bond between them would be severed forever.
"No!" Bai Zhuo shouted in panic, leaping to his feet and grabbing Ouyang Shirei's arm.
Ouyang Shirei was startled by his sudden outburst and asked in surprise, "Bai? What's wrong? Don't you want to have dinner here?"
Bai Zhuo lowered his head, concealing his expression. "Don't go."
"What... what? Ah... Bai, that hurts."
"Shirui," Bai Zhuo tightened his grip on her arm. "Shirui, don’t go."
Ouyang Shirei dared not look directly at him and did not turn around. Bai Zhuo's grip was strong enough to leave her arm red. "Shirui..."
"Yes?"
"I... I love you. But..."
Ouyang Shirei could feel Bai Zhuo trembling all over. Slowly, she turned around and gently wrapped her arms around him. "Bai, love shouldn't be spoken lightly. You must not understand love yet, right?"
Bai Zhuo suddenly looked up, tears streaming down his face as he shouted, "The one who doesn’t understand love is you, Sister Shirei!"
Ouyang Shirei was taken aback; it was the first time she had seen Bai Zhuo in tears. "For you, I would give up everything. For you, I would even give my life! But why didn’t you tell me sooner? Why?"
Ouyang Shirei was at a loss for words as Bai Zhuo shouted again, "Why didn’t you confess to me before Miao Xiaoqi? Why didn’t you confess before I got engaged to Ge Shui Lian? Why? Is it because of your so-called belief that you’re not good enough for me? The one who doesn’t understand love is you, Sister Shirei!"
Boom! Bai Zhuo's words echoed in Ouyang Shirei's mind like a thunderclap. Was she finally facing this moment? Bai, sister was just a burden; only girls like Ge Shui Lian were truly suitable for him. Just because she liked him didn’t mean they had to be together.
Ouyang Shirei realized she was a woman filled with insecurities.
"What about you and Miao Xiaoqi?" Ouyang Shirei's expression remained unchanged as she frowned. "She’s only sixteen..."
Bai Zhuo released Ouyang Shirei's arm and scoffed, "Yes, a sixteen-year-old girl. She’s sixteen, I’m twenty-six; there’s a ten-year gap between us. If she can dare to take that step, then what’s stopping you? It’s only a four-year difference between us, Sister Shirei. I’ve already hinted at my feelings for you twice... I really don’t know what you’re waiting for... It’s laughable that I’ve been foolishly waiting... Now look where we are; I can no longer pull away. Don’t worry about it; I’ll wait for Qi for two years. If she still can’t forget me, she’ll come back to find me."
Ouyang Shirei asked, "But aren’t you engaged to Ge Shui Lian?"
Bai Zhuo smiled bitterly. "Yes, we were supposed to be engaged a month ago, but I was... I was busy with important matters and missed the opportunity. However, Shui Lian's family has already tacitly accepted this situation. I really don’t know what to do now."
"Does Ge Shui Lian know about your relationship with Miao Xiaoqi?"
"Yes, she knows. She doesn’t like me, so she hasn’t reacted strongly."
Ouyang Shirei lowered her head and fell silent for a moment. "Then you can wait for Qi; she is young and beautiful and has skills far beyond mine."
"But..." Bai Zhuo walked toward the door, turning his back to Ouyang Shirei. "But the one I truly love is you..."
With that, he left without looking back.
Ouyang Shirei watched Bai Zhuo's retreating figure and chuckled lightly, "Hmph, like a petulant child who thinks he understands love." As she laughed, tears began to fall once more.
A clever green snake slowly poked its head out of her pocket, flicking its scarlet tongue as it sensed the cool air outside before retreating back in. Generally, cold-blooded animals hibernate during winter. However, Qing was not just any snake; she was the fearsome Gu Worm!
Strolling at the foot of Burial Mountain, Bai Zhuo took out his phone and called Huang Jiangliu.
"Hello, Mr. Bai?" Huang Jiangliu answered the call himself.
"It's me, Boss Huang. Have you found out who stole my scroll?" Bai Zhuo asked.
"Yes, we've figured it out, but we don't know which faction it belongs to. There's no trace here in Ningcheng," Huang Jiangliu replied.
"Do you know the name?"
Huang Jiangliu responded, "Not exactly, but I do know one person involved; his surname is Zhong."
"Surname Zhong?" There were very few people with that surname in Bai Zhuo's memory, but one stood out—Zhongli.
"I understand now; there's no need to investigate further."
"That's good. We lost a brother while looking into this."
Bai Zhuo frowned and asked, "Is he dead?"
"Oh, not exactly—he's just... gone mad."
"Gone mad?"
"Yes, it seems there are already two cases."
Bai Zhuo said, "Boss Huang, I'm available. Whenever you encounter any strange issues you can't resolve, feel free to reach out to me. No need to be so formal; I can come over tomorrow."
"Well, then I will trouble you, Mr. Bai. As for the person who wants to kill Mr. Bai, we have already found him. The individual matches the one in the surveillance footage by ninety-nine percent. However..."
"But what?"
Huang Jiangliu hesitated for a moment and said, "But we found a corpse."
"A corpse?" Bai Zhuo was somewhat surprised and speculated, "Was he killed by the employer?"
"Not quite. The body was discovered in the southern part of the city, but according to the police autopsy report, this person has been dead for about six months."
"What? Six months?" Bai Zhuo furrowed his brows and asked, "Is there an error in the autopsy? Or is the police hiding something?"
Huang Jiangliu replied, "The autopsy report is accurate. Director Hu Fei personally informed me about it. I have connections; I am Mr. Bai's person, so there shouldn't be any issues with the police unless Director Hu isn't one of us."
"That won't be the case. I trust Hu Fei's character; at least from appearances and after our interactions, he doesn't seem like that kind of person." Bai Zhuo asked, "Was the body found near Southern High School?"
"Yes, near Southern High School."
Zombies? A corpse? A necromancer—Wang Kun! Damn it!
Bai Zhuo gritted his teeth, nearly crushing his phone in his grip.
After a long silence without a response from Bai Zhuo, Huang Jiangliu said, "Mr. Bai, I'll have Liu bring the car over. If there's nothing else, I'll get back to work. Recently, we took on some influence from the Kagura Family and faced strong retaliation and siege, but fortunately, we managed to hold on."
Only then did Bai Zhuo speak up: "Alright, please send me the phone number of that Taoist named Wang Kun from back then. Also, contact Director Hu Fei and have him dispose of that corpse. If there’s anything else, just call me."
"Understood, Mr. Bai."
"Damn it!" After hanging up the phone, Bai Zhuo immediately began to curse, punching a tree by the roadside. Fortunately, there weren't many people around; otherwise, they would have thought Bai Zhuo was insane. "Damn you, Wang Kun! I almost fell into your trap! If I don't deal with you first, my hatred will never be resolved!"
Ding-dong. Bai Zhuo received a text message from Huang Jiangliu containing a string of phone numbers. Without hesitation, he dialed one of them.
The phone rang a few times before someone picked up on the other end, their voice low and somewhat gloomy. "Who is this?"
Bai Zhuo couldn't help but smirk slightly, his expression becoming somewhat charming as he replied loudly, "Guess!"
"Crazy person." The voice on the other end seemed ready to hang up, but Bai Zhuo shouted, "Wang Kun!"
There was a brief silence before the voice asked, "Who are you?"
Bai Zhuo didn't answer; he just burst into wild laughter. Suddenly stopping, he growled, "Necromancer Wang Kun! Are you ready to face my wrath?"
"You..." Wang Kun's voice faltered. "You are... Bai Zhuo! You're still alive!"
"Haha... Hahaha..." Bai Zhuo laughed again, defiantly declaring, "I took a stroll through the Underworld, but Yama couldn't keep me there. I thought about it and realized there's still scum like you causing havoc in the world. Yama let me come back to deal with you!"
A cold voice came from the other end: "Your master is dead. What do you have to fight me with? Just obediently report to the Underworld."
"Oh, Wang Kun, during the Nanyang Sorcery incident, it was you who interfered and controlled a sniper, wasn't it?"
Wang Kun scoffed. "Yes, so what?"
"Hehe... then it's perfect; we'll settle both old and new scores! Wait for me—don't die on me, Wang Kun!"
Wang Kun wanted to say more, but Bai Zhuo had already hung up the phone.
"Damn it!" Wang Kun slammed his phone against the wall, shattering it into pieces, and then got up to walk into the room behind him.
After hanging up, Bai Zhuo sighed. He had already made some bold statements, but the truth was, he didn't even have a concrete battle plan himself. He found a rock and sat down at the foot of the mountain.
The winter wind blew coldly, especially at the base of Burial Mountain, where the Yin Qi was oppressive.
"There really aren't many who can help me..." Bai Zhuo thought with a bitter smile. "If I think positively, Zheng Ming counts as one; Kagura Aoi counts as another. If only Kagura Keiha were here, that joker would truly be an indispensable asset! Uncle Hu's side is out of the question; they're just ordinary detectives... Oh right, Cai Wenwu!" Bai Zhuo clapped his hands excitedly and said, "But how can I get in touch with him? Would he lend me a hand? After all, it's about murder..."
Buzzing sounds interrupted his thoughts as his phone vibrated. Bai Zhuo picked it up and saw an unfamiliar number. He answered it, and a crisp female voice came through, "Brother Bai!"
Bai Zhuo asked in confusion, "Who are you?"
The voice on the other end playfully replied, "Brother Bai, it's me! It's me!"
Bai Zhuo racked his brain trying to remember who this familiar-sounding girl was. "Is it... Ning Lan?"
"Huh? Who's Ning Lan?" The tone from the other end sounded slightly displeased.
"Uh..." Bai Zhuo asked again, "Is it... Nie Qian?"
"Brother Bai! Nie Qian? Who's that? Brother Bai, you heartbreaker! I... I won't talk to you anymore!"
Suddenly, a vivid image flashed through Bai Zhuo's mind, and he exclaimed in surprise, "Miao Xiaoqi!" (To be continued.)
