My Tenant is a Female Ghost
"Are you blind? Isn't that 66 lit up?"
Bai Zhuo's words were aggressive, causing Manager Han to furrow his brows in silence. Zhang Gui couldn't hold back and shouted, "You brat! How dare you speak like that? Do you know who he is? The General Manager of the Business Department at Wanbao Group..."
Manager Han raised his hand to stop Zhang Gui and asked, "Young man, the 66th floor is Chairman Huang's office, and a leadership meeting is about to start. Which department are you from? I don't think I've seen you before."
Bai Zhuo was taken aback and didn't know how to respond. Zhang Gui noticed Bai Zhuo's reaction and thought to himself that given his demeanor, his status couldn't be too impressive. During the last alumni meeting, Liu Yun must have threatened him out of favoritism. With this in mind, Zhang Gui quickly seized the opportunity and said with a smile, "Manager Han, actually he is a high school classmate of mine and Sister Liu. This guy is also pursuing Sister Liu; I suspect he's here for her."
"Sister Liu? Secretary Liu from Huang Dong?" Manager Han asked.
Zhang Gui nodded affirmatively, a smile spreading across his face. Manager Han was quite mild-tempered and continued, "Young man, I admire your courage for coming to pursue a girl in our Chairman's office. However, your character leaves much to be desired. If you don't change it, a girl as outstanding as Sister Liu probably won't like you. Besides, the Chairman has an important meeting today; I advise you to come back another time."
Bai Zhuo was somewhat surprised; he had expected Manager Han to explode in anger but instead received a lecture. Amused yet feeling a bit presumptuous, Bai Zhuo asked, "What's your name?"
Manager Han didn't expect this young man to remain calm enough to ask for his name and replied, "I am Han Shan... Young man, please take my advice. My child is about your age too; you youngsters are good at what you do but tend to be a bit impulsive. You should head back for now."
Bai Zhuo shook his head with a smile and said inexplicably, "Han Shan? You're quite nice."
Zhang Gui felt his earlier disappointment vanish upon hearing Bai Zhuo's words. He thought, "Han Shan has no temper and let you off easy; how dare you not leave and embarrass yourself further? Let's see how you get out of this!"
Han Shan chuckled lightly, "You won't give up until you hit the wall. Although I don't know how you got up here, the Chairman's office isn't somewhere just anyone can enter... Do as you wish." With that, he ignored Bai Zhuo and turned his gaze back to the scenery outside the elevator.
The observation elevator ascended slowly; anyone with acrophobia might feel uneasy up there. However, the view outside was quite nice—facing Ningjiang, one could see the entire layout of Ningcheng. The geographical location of Wanbao Group's headquarters could indeed be considered a good spot.
The elevator quickly reached the 66th floor, and Han Shan led Zhang Gui toward the conference room, while Bai Zhuo naturally made his way to Huang Jiangliu's office. At the end of the corridor, several security personnel stood straight. Ever since Bai Zhuo had interacted with Cai Wenwu, Ning Chen, and Captain Li Tao, he had become aware of a faint aura of danger surrounding these security guards. However, it was not as fierce as the presence of Zhao from before, who had been brought out from underground fighting by Huang Jiangliu.
These security guards recognized Bai Zhuo and respectfully bowed to him without any obstruction. Pushing open the door revealed Liu Yun's office, which contained a desk, a set of negotiation tea tables, and a vase of flowers—simple yet elegant. However, Liu Yun was not in the office. Moving further inside led to Huang Jiangliu's office. Huang Jiangliu was deeply engrossed in his writing when he looked up at the noise and immediately smiled, saying, "Mr. Bai, you’re here!"
"Yes," Bai Zhuo replied calmly. "How have you been lately?"
"Very well. The company's profits have increased compared to previous years..."
Bai Zhuo interrupted him, "I meant how has your life been recently?"
"Uh..." Huang Jiangliu paused, feeling a slight warmth in his heart. "It's pretty good... quite busy, but fulfilling."
"Your wife and child are abroad; are you managing alone? Don’t you miss them?"
Mentioning Huang Jiangliu's family softened his resolute eyes. "It would be a lie to say I don't miss them; it's just that with certain matters, having them around is quite inconvenient. I can only endure for now; almost everything can be resolved with a phone call nowadays. By the way, Junhao found the book you sent him very helpful. He’s determined to become a Yin Yang Master like you who saves people in need!"
Bai Zhuo chuckled, "How did I become a savior? I'm not a living bodhisattva."
Huang Jiangliu stood up to pour tea for Bai Zhuo. "You saved Junhao's mother; he sees you as his lifesaver. Ever since he discovered his unique abilities, he has looked up to you as a role model and is working hard toward becoming a Yin Yang Master."
Bai Zhuo was surprised by the significant impact he had on that child and didn’t know how to respond. He simply advised, "You and Junhao should take it slow; there’s no need to rush. In the Yin Yang Realm, some things can be quite dangerous. Once things settle down in Ningcheng, we can bring your family back and have a good gathering together. Trust me; it won’t be long."
Huang Jiangliu nodded firmly. "Yes! I believe in you, Mr. Bai; I always have!"
Bai Zhuo patted Huang Jiangliu on the shoulder and asked, "By the way, doesn’t the business department have a manager named Han Shan?"
Huang Jiangliu asked, "What's wrong?"
"Oh, I just ran into him in the elevator."
"Did he... offend Mr. Bai?" Huang Jiangliu inquired.
Bai Zhuo waved his hand dismissively. "No, no, it's nothing like that. I just think this person has a very gentle and reserved character, and he is quite cautious in his work."
Huang Jiangliu felt relieved. "Han Shan may be slightly weaker in terms of business skills, but he is indeed good at handling people. I'm considering whether to promote him to head of the HR department."
Bai Zhuo replied, "I'm not trying to interfere with your company's matters; you're the expert in that area. I just feel that Han Shan's character suits me well. Whether or not to use him heavily depends on your own judgment, Boss Huang."
Huang Jiangliu nodded. "Mr. Bai is right. After all, no matter how good a person's character is, if they can't create value for the company, there's no point in keeping them around. I'll think about it more. I have a meeting to attend now; feel free to sit here, Mr. Bai. I'll have Liu come over; you young people should get along well."
"No need for that. Liu Yun is your secretary and can help you with some tasks. Don't worry about me; you focus on your own work."
"Alright then, I'll go to the meeting now."
As Huang Jiangliu left, Bai Zhuo sat in his chair, looking out over the entire Ningcheng.
Lately, he had been feeling extremely tired. Whether it was matters of the heart or issues related to the Yin Yang Realm, everything felt chaotic. If he hadn't helped Ouyang Shirei deal with the supernatural incidents at the academy back then, he wouldn't have met Ouyang Shirei or Huang Jiangliu, and he might have even missed encounters with Elder Ge and Ge Shui Lian. But there were no "what ifs" in this world. Just like Su Meiniang—if he hadn't gone on a blind date with Zhang Ni before, he wouldn't be troubled by money now, nor would he have inexplicably attracted Su Meiniang, the female ghost from My Tenant is a Female Ghost. Oh right, and there was Lin Yao Yao too.
Lin Yao Yao was truly enigmatic; it seemed she was even more mysterious than An Zhi Xi. If he wanted to figure out who had saved him three times—the "self"—he would need to start with Lin Yao Yao.
By the way, didn't Su Meiniang know Lin Yao Yao? He could start by probing into Su Meiniang! But then again, these three Millennium Ghosts seemed to know each other; what kind of connection could there be among them?
Bai Zhuo was lost in thought and unknowingly fell asleep.
After an unknown amount of time, he felt some movement around him and suddenly woke up, grabbing the arm of the intruder and shouting, "Who is it?"
Liu Yun was startled, letting out a gasp as her coat slipped from her hands. Seeing this, Bai Zhuo relaxed and released his grip. "Sorry, there are too many people who want to kill me. I got a bit tense just now."
Too many people wanting to kill him? Liu Yun couldn't imagine what his life must be like. After hearing this, she swallowed hard, bending down to pick up the coat from the floor. "I saw you sleeping and was afraid you'd catch a cold, so I just wanted to cover you with a coat. You really were a bit tense."
Bai Zhuo rubbed his aching temples and asked, "Is it done?"
"Yeah, almost. Huang Dong only left one or two department managers there to talk, so I came back first."
Bai Zhuo stretched lazily; after a nap, he felt much better. He picked up the cool tea on the table and took a sip, squinting his eyes as he enjoyed the quiet moment of the afternoon.
Liu Yun brewed another pot of tea for him, filling his cup. She had a thousand questions she wanted to ask him, but she held back. Whether it was regret or jealousy, some things were like memories that could only be savored quietly. The past should be left in the past; keeping it buried in her heart seemed the wisest choice.
The boy who had once been toyed with by her had now transformed into a dragon soaring through the skies. She needed to seize her own opportunities and catch up to his pace, Liu Yun thought.
Before long, Huang Jiangliu returned, and Liu Yun stepped out. Bai Zhuo said, "Tonight, let's go have dinner with Uncle Hu."
"Uncle Hu? Is that Hu Fei?" Huang Jiangliu asked.
Noticing that Huang Jiangliu's expression seemed off, Bai Zhuo inquired, "Yeah, what's wrong? We're all on the same side. Is there something between you two?"
Huang Jiangliu chuckled, "Not really. I met him last time when I was investigating those two art thieves. He seemed like a nice guy."
"Well, that's good enough. Let's go; it's about time. You should get ready."
Huang Jiangliu nodded in agreement, but Bai Zhuo felt that something was off about him. However, Bai Zhuo didn’t dwell on it. He took out the note and called Cai Wenbin.
"Hello, City Criminal Investigation Team. Who's this?"
"It's me, Bai Zhuo."
"Bai Zhuo?" Cai Wenbin couldn't recall immediately, "Which Bai Zhuo?"
"Tsk... your lifesaver, Bai Zhuo!"
Cai Wenbin fell silent for a moment, "You're quite the joker, bringing up your lifesaver like that. Isn't it annoying?"
"Huh? Is this how you talk to your lifesaver?"
Cai Wenbin was at a loss for words, worried that Bai Zhuo might complain to his brother, which would not end well for him. He replied impatiently, "Alright, alright. What does your lifesaver want?"
"Now that's more like it! Give me your brother's phone number."
"What do you need my brother for? He's really busy!" Cai Wenbin said cautiously.
"Are you going to give it to me or not? If not, I'll just ask Captain Li for it. Then you, as the younger brother..." Before he could finish his sentence, Cai Wenbin interrupted him and shouted, "Fine! Fine! I'll text you. Just please don’t say anything bad about me in front of my brother. He hits so hard every time; sooner or later, he’ll kill me."
It seemed that Cai Wenbin was quite afraid of his brother.
Bai Zhuo chuckled as he hung up the phone. After receiving the number, he immediately called Cai Wenwu. The phone rang for a while before it connected.
"Bai Zhuo?" Cai Wenwu answered.
Bai Zhuo curiously asked, "How did you know it was me?"
Cai Wenwu replied with a smile, "We were bound to have contact sooner or later. I saved your number a long time ago. What's up? Do you need any help?"
"No, no, I just wanted to ask if you're free. Let's go to Uncle Hu's place for dinner tonight. By the way, I want to thank you for that Type 54 pistol; I really like it."
Cai Wenwu joked, "Haha, I'm glad you like it. But Bai Zhuo, are you really trying to exchange a meal for my pistol? That seems a bit too trivial, especially since it's not even you treating me."
Bai Zhuo sighed, "Alright, alright, I knew there’s no such thing as a free lunch... As long as you ask, I’ll do my best to help."
"Haha, that's more like it. Coincidentally, I have something I need your help with too, and I'm in Ningcheng. We'll discuss it over dinner tonight."
Bai Zhuo became curious and asked, "What is it about?"
"Oh, it's related to the Tomb Robbery Case from last time. We can talk about the specifics when we meet; it's hard to explain everything over the phone."
Bai Zhuo nodded, "Okay, see you tonight."
After making arrangements with Hu Fei, Huang Jiangliu drove Bai Zhuo to an area in the second ring of the city. Bai Zhuo followed the address as he walked towards Hu Fei's home.
"Ding dong."
"They're here!" A clear female voice rang out from inside the room as the doorbell chimed. When the door opened, a charming woman appeared, holding a kitchen knife. It was clear she was Hu Fei's wife.
Upon seeing the basket of fruits in Bai Zhuo's hands, the woman smiled and said, "Oh my, why did you buy fruits when you came? The fridge is almost overflowing with them..." Her gaze suddenly fixed on Huang Jiangliu, and her expression turned pale. The knife in her hand trembled and nearly slipped from her grip.
At that moment, a broad hand reached out from behind Bai Zhuo and caught the knife just before it fell to the ground, firmly grasping the handle.
"Hey? Sister-in-law, why are you so surprised to see me? You almost dropped your knife!" The newcomer was Cai Wenwu.
The woman snapped back to reality and forced a smile. "Oh dear, I'm sorry! Wenwu is here too! Come in, come in! Dinner will be ready soon!"
She led the three of them inside. Bai Zhuo followed behind, glancing at the awkwardly silent Huang Jiangliu before turning back to look at the housewife with a puzzled expression.
Oh, there seems to be a story here... (To be continued.)
