He gently adjusted the hem of my wedding dress and nodded lightly. "Alright, this one. Salesperson, please wrap it up." Fu Zhenting's voice was deep and magnetic, making my heart race. I stole a glance at him and found him focused on me, his eyes filled with warmth and affection.
After leaving the mall, Fu Zhenting didn’t take me to the hotel we had booked or arrange any other wedding details. Instead, he drove us back to the small one-bedroom apartment we had rented before.
Confused, I followed him inside the familiar little place, glancing around at the simple furniture, a sense of bewilderment rising within me. "Why are we back? Aren't we supposed to…"
" Jiayi," Fu Zhenting suddenly interrupted me. He took a deep breath, his gaze locking onto my eyes. "There are some things I need to tell you."
"I know it's hard for you to accept," Fu Zhenting said apologetically, "I deliberately concealed my identity in order to… to get close to you."
"Get close to me?" My eyes widened in disbelief, feeling a bit overwhelmed. "Why would you want to get close to me?"
"Because…" A faint blush crossed Fu Zhenting's face as he lowered his gaze and whispered, "Because I like you."
I felt my cheeks flush as a wave of warmth surged from my heart to my head. He… he likes me?
"From the first time I saw you in Grandma's hospital room, I… I was drawn to you…" Fu Zhenting's voice grew softer, nearly inaudible.
Suddenly, I stood up, both embarrassed and angry, pounding my fists against his chest. "Fu Zhenting! You big liar! How could you keep pretending to be poor just to deceive me!"
Fu Zhenting wrapped his arms around me tightly, holding me close as I continued to hit him.
"I'm sorry, Jiayi," his voice was low and hoarse. "I promise I will never deceive you again."
He lowered his head and kissed my lips, gentle and affectionate.
I closed my eyes, feeling his breath, and all my grievances and anger dissipated.
The next day, Fu Zhenting took me to meet his parents. The elderly couple was very kind and seemed quite pleased with me.
" Jiayi, this boy has been introverted and quiet since he was little," Mother Fu said, holding my hand with a warm smile. "You should be more understanding of him in the future."
I blushed and nodded, softly replying, "Auntie, I will."
"Good child, good child," Father Fu said with a smile as well. "From now on, consider this place your home. If you need anything, just let us know."
After dinner, Fu Zhenting drove me home. As we passed by the market, he stopped the car and said, "I'll go buy some groceries to cook for you tonight."
I followed him into the market.
"Hey, Xiao Fu is here to buy meat again?" Meat Seller Uncle greeted enthusiastically. "What do you want today?"
"Same as usual, Uncle," Fu Zhenting replied with a smile before turning to me. " Jiayi, what do you feel like eating?"
"Anything... is fine," I said quietly, a blush creeping onto my face.
"Your man is here to buy meat again?" Meat Seller Uncle's cheerful voice rang out once more.
I stole a glance at Fu Zhenting, who was smiling at me with eyes full of tenderness and affection.
"Mm," I nodded lightly, a sweet warmth surging in my heart.
"Give me two pounds of pork belly, with a good mix of fat and lean," Fu Zhenting said to the Meat Seller Uncle, while pulling out his phone from his pocket to scan for payment.
I reached out and tugged at his sleeve. "Let me do it."
Fu Zhenting turned his head, a smile dancing in his eyes. "It's fine, I'll handle it."
After paying, Fu Zhenting took the meat the uncle handed him and placed it into the shopping bag.
"Xiao Fu, your wife is really beautiful! How come I’ve never seen her before?" the Meat Seller Uncle chatted with Fu Zhenting while skillfully chopping ribs.
"We just got married not long ago, Uncle," Fu Zhenting replied calmly, a barely noticeable smile playing on his lips.
I pressed my lips together and quietly pinched Fu Zhenting's arm. He turned slightly to look at me, his gaze gentle.
"Then I must congratulate you," the Meat Seller Uncle said with a grin. "Happy newlyweds, you two."
