"Some people just aren't good at expressing themselves," I said with a smile, skillfully pouring the batter onto the griddle. "Just like this Jianbing Guozi; it's delicious without needing to say it." I used the spatula to spread the Jianbing evenly, sprinkling it with chopped green onions and sesame seeds.
Bai Qianchen looked at me, a hint of hesitation flashing in her eyes. She took a deep breath and, mimicking Gu Yuanshan's usual cold tone, squeezed out two words: "Thank you." Her cheeks flushed slightly, and her gaze drifted away, as if she felt a bit shy.
I couldn't help but laugh at her sudden imitation. "Not bad, you're making progress!" I took a new Jianbing Guozi from the warmer and handed it to her. "This is your reward."
Bai Qianchen accepted the Jianbing Guozi, the corners of her mouth lifting slightly into a faint smile.
At that moment, a figure on a bicycle approached from afar and stopped in front of my stall. The person wore black-rimmed glasses and an old-fashioned suit; it was the head of the business department. "Xie Gongqiu, do you remember me?" he adjusted his glasses, excitement lacing his tone.
I looked up at him, pondering for a moment before recalling that he was the leader who had been hit on the head by my Metaverse Paper Plane in the company cafeteria last time. "Of course I remember," I nodded, continuing to make Jianbing without pausing.
"Our company has just established a 'Paper Airplane Research Department' dedicated to studying your kind of paper airplane that can fly into the Metaverse," the business department leader pushed up his glasses, his eyes filled with anticipation. "We need talents like you! The pay is generous, and the working hours are flexible. What do you think? Are you interested?"
"Paper Airplane Research Department?" I raised an eyebrow, curiosity bubbling up inside me. This department sounded quite interesting, and with flexible hours, it suited me perfectly. "Sure," I replied readily.
The business department leader beamed at my response. "Great! Let's go right now!" He patted the back seat of his bicycle.
I quickly tidied up my stall and hopped onto the back seat of the business department leader's bicycle as we left the night market. Curious glances from nearby vendors and customers followed us as they whispered among themselves.
Gu Yuanshan drove back to the company, habitually heading toward the Jianbing stall, only to find it empty. He frowned and pulled out his phone to call Manager Li. "Manager Li, where's Xie Gongqiu?"
"President Gu, Miss Xie has been recruited by the head of the business department to join the newly established 'Paper Airplane Research Department,'" Manager Li replied respectfully.
"Paper Airplane Research Department?" Gu Yuanshan hung up the phone, confusion filling his mind. He immediately drove to the company.
Inside the company building, he found a sign hanging at the entrance of a newly established department that read "Paper Airplane Research Department." Gu Yuanshan pushed open the door and saw Xie Gongqiu sitting at a large table, carefully folding various colored papers into paper airplanes. The table was already adorned with paper airplanes of different shapes and sizes, colorful and visually striking.
"Xie Gongqiu, what are you up to again?" Gu Yuanshan approached her, his tone laced with a hint of questioning.
I looked up at him and raised the Paper Airplane in my hand. "This is my latest development, the upgraded Metaverse Paper Plane. It can achieve real Metaverse travel." I offered the Paper Airplane to him, "Want to give it a try?"
As I handed over the Metaverse Paper Plane, the colorful ink shimmered under the light.
Gu Yuanshan glanced down at the Paper Airplane I had presented, his brows slightly furrowed. He reached out to take it, and the moment his fingertips touched the paper, an inexplicable sense of familiarity surged within him. The texture and color reminded him of folding Paper Airplanes with his father during childhood. "Childish," he muttered, yet unconsciously unfolded and refolded the Paper Airplane, repeating the simple action.
Watching his somewhat clumsy movements, I couldn't help but smile slyly. "President Gu, this is not an ordinary Paper Airplane," I pointed to a tiny button on the wing of the Paper Airplane. "Press it, and you'll experience an unprecedented flying adventure."
Gu Yuanshan followed my finger and indeed found a nearly invisible micro-button on the wing. After a moment's hesitation, he finally pressed it.
The instant he pressed the button, the Paper Airplane suddenly emitted a dazzling light, causing the office lights to flicker briefly before returning to normal.
Gu Yuanshan felt a wave of dizziness wash over him; his body felt weightless as if gravity had vanished. He shook his head, trying to stay alert. When he opened his eyes again, he found himself in an unfamiliar environment surrounded by flowing lights and abstract geometric shapes, with strange electronic music echoing in his ears.
This was a technologically advanced virtual space, resembling the interior of a massive spaceship. The futuristic design overwhelmed him momentarily. He looked around in disbelief, searching for something familiar to anchor himself.
"President Gu, welcome to the Metaverse!" I appeared beside him at some point, wearing a mysterious smile. Gu Yuanshan turned sharply to look at me, shock and confusion evident in his eyes. "What... what is going on?" he stammered as he pointed at the surroundings. "Is this... a dream?" He rubbed his eyes, trying to confirm whether he was still in reality.
I smiled lightly and shook my head. "President Gu, this is not a dream; this is the virtual space created by my latest development, the Metaverse Paper Plane." I noticed that not far away, Bai Qianchen and Manager Li had also appeared in this space, both looking bewildered as they scanned their surroundings. "Miss Bai, Manager Li, you’re here too," I waved at them.
Bai Qianchen saw me and immediately ran over, gripping my arm tightly. " Gongqiu, what’s going on? I feel so strange..." Her voice trembled slightly, clearly unsettled by the unfamiliar environment. Manager Li, on the other hand, observed the surroundings with a serious expression, his brow furrowed as if deep in thought.
I walked up to Gu Yuanshan and handed him a VR headset, its black frame contrasting with the silver metallic edges, exuding a strong sense of technology. "Put this on, and you'll be able to experience the charm of the Metaverse more clearly." I gestured for him to wear it. Gu Yuanshan took the VR headset, hesitated for a moment, then placed it on his head.
Once he donned the VR headset, the virtual world before him became much clearer; it was no longer a blur of lights and abstract shapes but transformed into a vivid reality.
He saw various fantastical sights and creatures: colorful schools of fish swimming through the air, winged lions galloping across the plains, and bizarre plants emitting a soft glow. He even spotted a massive blue planet slowly rotating, seemingly within reach.
"This... this is incredible!" He couldn't help but exclaim, his eyes filled with excitement and curiosity. Bai Qianchen and Manager Li also put on the VR headsets I had handed them, letting out gasps of astonishment.
I began explaining how the Metaverse Paper Plane worked and its future development prospects.
"President Gu, this Paper Airplane utilizes the latest quantum entanglement technology and virtual reality technology to upload human consciousness into the virtual world, achieving true traversal of the Metaverse..." I pointed at the scenes in the virtual world. "We can build a brand new world here—one without limits, filled with infinite possibilities..." I spoke passionately about my vision, confidence shining in my eyes.
Gu Yuanshan removed the VR headset, his expression filled with shock and admiration. He looked at me as if he were seeing me for the first time. "Xie Gongqiu, you... you are truly a genius!" he exclaimed sincerely. "I had many misunderstandings about you before..." He scratched his head awkwardly. "Your creativity and business acumen have made me see you in a new light..."
He took a deep breath and looked at me with determination. "I've decided to invest in your project!" His tone was resolute. "And I hope you can join my company to develop this Metaverse Paper Plane with us!" He extended his hand toward me.
