"Useless! A bunch of useless fools!" The Emperor roared, kicking over a rosewood chair in the imperial study.
The chair crashed to the ground with a dull thud. Debao knelt on the floor, his body trembling, not daring to breathe, beads of sweat forming on his forehead.
The study was filled with the bitter scent of ink, mingling with the rich aroma of ambergris that clung to the Emperor, creating an atmosphere of oppressive tension.
Debao shook his hands as he carefully wiped the ink stains from the floor with a handkerchief, fearful of making any noise that might provoke the Emperor's wrath.
Outside the study, the palace maids and eunuchs held their breath, not daring to make a sound, afraid of disturbing the furious Emperor.
"Go! Summon the General of the Cavalry!" The Emperor pointed at the door and barked. He paced back and forth, the hem of his dragon robe swirling with his movements like a rolling ball of fury.
Debao quickly bowed his head. "This servant obeys!" He got up, bent over, and hurried out of the study.
The setting sun cast its last rays on the palace walls, elongating Debao's shadow and reflecting the anxious expression on his face. He rushed to the Inner Palace, immediately sending someone to deliver the summons to the General of the Cavalry's residence.
Inside the General's residence, he was discussing military matters with his staff. "General, someone from His Majesty has arrived," a guard reported hastily, interrupting their conversation. The guard knelt on one knee, holding out the imperial edict. The General took it and opened it; his expression immediately turned serious.
"The Emperor summons me to the palace at once." He handed the edict to his staff. "It seems something urgent has happened in court." He quickly got up, changed into his formal attire, and strode out of the residence, mounting his horse and galloping toward the palace. The sound of hooves shattered the evening calm, startling a flock of birds into flight. The palace lanterns along the path began to light up one by one, illuminating the way.
Upon arriving outside the imperial study, the General dismounted and handed the reins to a guard. He adjusted his attire and quickly entered the study.
"Your servant pays respects to Your Majesty." The General knelt on one knee and bowed before the Emperor.
"At ease." The Emperor's voice was low and hoarse, revealing no hint of his emotions. He waved his hand to dismiss the palace maids and eunuchs from the study, leaving only Debao standing beside him.
In the study, only the Emperor and the General of the Cavalry remained.
"My sister... what exactly happened to her?" The General of the Cavalry broke the silence first, his tone filled with concern. His brows were tightly knitted, thick enough to almost form a single line.
The Emperor walked to the desk, picked up a cup of tea that had long gone cold, and drank it in one gulp without speaking. He set the cup down heavily on the table, producing a sharp sound.
"I want to know too!" The Emperor finally spoke, his tone tinged with helplessness and anger. "After she fell into the water and woke up, it's as if she became a different person! Her words are crude, her behavior frivolous; she shows not a trace of what a queen should be!" As he spoke, he rubbed his temples, seemingly feeling a wave of headache.
Upon hearing this, the General of the Cavalry displayed a look of shock. "How... how is that possible?" he asked incredulously. "My sister has always been gentle and virtuous; how could she..."
"I don't believe it either, but the facts are right before us." The Emperor moved to the window, gazing at the darkening sky outside, his tone somber. "She even... even teased me!" As he finished this sentence, a faint blush crossed his face.
The General of the Cavalry was even more shocked; he opened his mouth but found himself at a loss for words. A brief silence fell over the study, broken only by Debao's soft breathing.
"In my opinion, we should have the imperial physician examine Her Majesty again," suggested the General of the Cavalry.
The Emperor turned to look at him and nodded. "Summon the physician!" he instructed Debao.
Debao acknowledged the command and bowed before exiting the study.
