Three days had passed, and during our covert observation, no one had gone to Tianyu Company to cause trouble. Yang Shuai was set to be discharged today, and we had been watching him for three days. Detective Captain was responsible for keeping an eye on Mi Si, but so far, there had been no news, indicating that there were no actions taken.
"Brother Shao, could it really be Yang Shuai who did this?" Mary asked me. "If it was him, he wouldn't need to put himself in such a situation; it's too tragic. If we hadn't had the herbs back then, wouldn't he have been eaten alive by the Insect Eater? Besides, we also got the voice recorder; wasn't everything planned by that big brother?"
I shook my head and said, "No way, it has to be him. Things are not as simple as we think. Perhaps this case has been Yang Shuai's scheme from the very beginning. Just wait; he only has a week. He will definitely retrieve the jade quickly and then sell it off; otherwise, he won't be able to recover his funds, and his wife will end up in prison."
Everyone nodded in agreement.
However, things gradually began to unfold in ways I hadn't anticipated.
It was already the fourth day, and Yang Shuai still acted as if nothing was wrong—eating when he needed to eat and sleeping when he needed to sleep. We hadn't noticed any abnormalities, which made me increasingly suspicious that something was off. He hadn't returned to Tianyu Company at all; it seemed he had completely entrusted its management to his wife.
"Could it be that you really guessed wrong?" Yan Junde said at that moment. "Is it possible that everyone involved in this case is so cunning that it's made you overly paranoid?"
I frowned. According to my reasoning, everything should connect into a coherent line, yet the current developments were beyond my expectations. Could it be that I was truly mistaken? Was Yang Shuai not the mastermind behind the jade theft? Just as I pondered this, Detective Captain's call came through.
"Any discoveries?" I asked.
Detective Captain replied, "We've found the person who stole the jade. Following your instructions, we've been monitoring Mi Si these past few days. Tonight, she didn't go home but drove out to the suburbs instead. Under a bridge, she dug up a large package. We apprehended her on the spot, and upon inspection, we confirmed that this batch of jade is indeed the one stolen from the Jade Exhibition."
I furrowed my brow and said, "Dezi, you continue to monitor Yang Shuai. If Mi Si knows where this batch of jade is located, it must have been Yang Shuai who told her! There can't be any other explanation. The rest of us should head back now and interrogate Mi Si to see what we can find out."
Yan Junde nodded and said, "Understood."
When we returned to the Police Department, Mi Si was already in the interrogation room. Detective Captain and I conducted the questioning while Mi Si looked at us with disdain and said, "I won't say anything until my lawyer arrives."
I chuckled lightly and replied, "I think you've watched too many dramas. We have both the person and the evidence. Investigations show that this batch of jade is indeed from the missing jade of the Jade Exhibition. I advise you to tell the truth because you need to understand that stealing and selling stolen goods are not part of the same system. If you merely took it out or if you participated in the theft itself, that's a different matter altogether."
Mi Si remained silent as she stared at me.
I continued, "There are some things I need to clarify with you. To be honest, we suspect that all of this was orchestrated by your husband. It seems you signed some sort of agreement earlier; although I'm not clear on what you agreed upon with him, think carefully about who benefits if you're caught! I must remind you that if your funding chain isn't restored within a week, you'll have used company funds and could end up in prison."
As I spoke, I watched her expression change; indeed, after I finished speaking, her brows slightly furrowed. However, this time I couldn't confidently determine her thoughts; if she pulled off an Oscar-worthy performance like Fatty did before, all my tactics would be rendered ineffective.
She seemed to be pondering something in her mind before she spoke, "While I was in the hospital, my husband signed a document giving me all the shares held by Tianyu Company, leaving only a piece of jade for himself..."
I frowned and replied, "Are you not aware that Tianyu Company is facing serious financial issues? Are you willing to take over this mess? The reason you transferred billions from your own company to fill this huge gap is because Yang Shuai informed you about the whereabouts of that batch of jade, isn't it?"
"That batch of jade is gone!" I said, staring into her eyes. "What do you plan to use to cover the funding shortfall?"
Mi Si looked at me with a complex expression and said, "I intended to use that batch of jade to fill the financial gap, but I didn't expect you all to be watching me so closely. It wasn't Yang Shuai who told me; it was someone I don't even know."
"What?" I couldn't help but exclaim. "If it wasn't Yang Shuai, then who could it be?"
Mi Si licked her lips and said, "Four nights ago, just a few hours before you called me. I suddenly received a call from someone who said there was a batch of jade for sale. It was around ten o'clock at night, and at first, I didn't believe it. But he said he would deliver two finished pieces within an hour."
Mi Si continued reminiscing, "After saying that, he hung up. I didn't think much of it, but sure enough, an hour later, the doorbell rang at my house. When I opened the door, no one was there—only the packaged jade. In my youth, I had dealt with jade stones alongside Yang Shuai and knew how to identify them."
"I found that both pieces of jade were of excellent quality," Mi Si said. "Not long after that, the person called me again and urged me to trust his sincerity. He claimed there was much more jade available; I just needed to pay him one hundred thousand upfront and then another million after receiving the jade. The price for those two pieces was already over two hundred thousand—he only wanted ten thousand!"
The Detective Captain interjected, "This sounds so mysterious. Didn't you suspect that this might be a scam? Perhaps the origins of this batch of jade are not clean?"
Mi Si shook her head and replied, "At that moment, I thought if he really had a large quantity of this kind of jade, then asking for just one million was nothing. I could make hundreds of thousands or even millions more. Plus, he said I could pay him the million after verifying the jade; if I agreed, I would transfer ten thousand to an account he provided and he would send me the address where the jade was hidden."
"Give me that account immediately! And his phone number," I said.
As she spoke, Mi Si provided me with an account number and phone number, which I promptly handed over to Mary for investigation.
The Detective Captain gestured for Mi Si to continue.
"Those two pieces of jade were already worth over two hundred thousand," Mi Si looked at us and said. "I'm a businesswoman; even if I lost ten thousand by sending it to him, it wouldn't matter. If it turned out to be real, I'd make even more profit. So I agreed; however, at that time, I still had no idea about the theft at the Jade Exhibition and hadn't considered that possibility."
Mi Si looked at us as if trying to convince us of her story. Naturally, I didn't believe her; even a naive young person could tell that something was off. How could Mi Si—a cunning businesswoman—not see through this? But I kept my thoughts to myself and let her continue.
"Not long after that, an address came through on my phone," Mi Si said as she shifted in her seat. "I thought about going to pick it up when you called me. During the call, I learned that Yang Shuai was in trouble and rushed to the hospital. In his hospital room, Yang Shuai seemed fine; he told me there were issues with Jade Investment and that tomorrow was the contract's expiration date when someone would come to collect debts."
Mi Si furrowed her brow and said, "At that moment, I thought to myself that if I could take over Tianyu Company, it would be a powerful alliance. With just one million yuan, I could secure tens of millions or even hundreds of millions in funding. So, I proposed to acquire his company, promising to handle the debts, but he had to transfer his shares to me."
"He agreed, and I immediately went to print the documents. After having them notarized by a lawyer, I brought them back for him to sign." Tears streamed down Mi Si's face as she continued, "Thus, I became the chairwoman of Tianyu Company; the company became mine, and he was left with only a piece of jade. The very piece you brought back! I locked the black jade in his office safe."
We nodded in understanding.
Mi Si continued, "That night, I used funds from my own company's board to transfer into Tianyu Company. The next day, I used that money to repay the principal to those investors, preserving Tianyu Company's reputation. But at that moment, I heard about the theft at the Jade Exhibition, and it finally dawned on me. That jade was stolen; that's why that mysterious person sold it to me for such a low price of one million."
Mi Si's tears flowed freely as she spoke. "But by then, there was no turning back for me. Just as you said, if I didn't replenish my cash flow, I would be arrested for misappropriating company funds and end up in prison. Tianyu Company had just repaid its debts and hadn't even started operating yet. If I collapsed now, both companies would go under!"
"I truly had no choice!" Mi Si cried. "Even though I now knew the origins of the jade, there was nothing I could do to stop it. I only had one week left to sell the jade off. Today, I couldn't wait any longer; so I went to the agreed location and dug out the jade. After that, you all know what happened."
At that moment, Mary walked in and leaned close to my ear. "I just found out that the account traced back to someone; it's a foreign account belonging to Shorty. The phone number has been deactivated. I checked the call logs; he only called Mi Si once. It seems Shorty only used it a few times."
Shorty had indeed contacted Yang Shuai's wife Mi Si. If Yang Shuai hadn’t told him anything, how could things align so perfectly? Yang Shuai's suspicion was growing stronger with each investigation, yet every time we followed a lead, it pointed elsewhere—as if everything were being controlled by an unseen hand.
