When people do not understand someone, they often imagine a version of that person based on what others say. We only know that Wang Chaoyang was timid and weak as a child, but we do not understand the reasons behind this series of traits. Autism, also known as childhood autism, manifests in language barriers, social interaction difficulties, and more.
Seventy-five percent of individuals with autism also have intellectual disabilities, meaning they have low IQs. However, it seems that Wang Chaoyang does not fall into this category; individuals with autism who have normal intelligence are referred to as having High-Functioning Autism. This high-functioning form of autism has produced many geniuses throughout history, including physicists like Newton and Einstein, renowned painters like Van Gogh, and musicians like Beethoven.
It appears that only the Old Principal recognized Wang Chaoyang's potential for the future, while everyone else regarded him as a freak. While we lament this fact, we also rule out the possibility of Wang Chaoyang being a murderer; many can attest that he did not have the time to commit such an act. This suggests that my grasp on the direction of this case has been misguided from the very beginning.
There must be another commonality among the three individuals involved; perhaps we cannot solely connect Xu Rong and Wu Shuhau without also involving their father, Wu Jianye. With this thought in mind, I felt it was essential to link the activities and backgrounds of these three individuals together.
In the car, I said to Mary, "Create a chart that thoroughly connects Wu Shuhau, Wu Jianye, and Xu Rong. We can't overlook any clues. Something unknown must have happened among them; let's outline a timeline..."
Mary nodded and began working on it while we were still in the car.
According to regulations, we were not allowed to leave Jing City; we needed to hurry back there now. Just as I was driving, a call came in from Juan Juan. I quickly answered and asked, " Juan Juan? What's wrong? We're heading back now."
"Where are you right now?" Juan Juan asked anxiously. "Aren't you with Mary?"
I found Juan Juan's question a bit strange but replied, "Yes, Mary and I were investigating Wang Chaoyang's case. We just reached a conclusion: Wang Chaoyang is not the Killer; he is actually the manager of our City Kunpeng Corporation. The Killer is someone else!"
"Now Director Wang and the others know that the Killer is someone else too!" Juan Juan's voice suddenly turned somber. "This is bad; they're coming. I'll send you the details to your phone. Remember to destroy your phone and SIM card after using it; Mary will help you..."
With that, Juan Juan hung up. I was left confused, unable to grasp what Juan Juan meant by those words. A moment later, some information was sent to my phone. I immediately handed my phone to Mary so she could copy the information onto her computer. I pulled over to the side and watched as Mary worked on her computer.
"What’s going on?" I asked.
Mary pulled up what Juan Juan had sent and read through it quickly before widening her eyes at the screen and then looking at me in disbelief. "The guy who kills in the name of death has appeared again! The data includes photos taken secretly and detailed information; it seems an insider leaked it to Sister Juan. Moreover, at the crime scene, police found ten fingerprints on the victim."
"Fingerprints?" Upon hearing Mary's words, I couldn't help but ask, "Did they identify whose fingerprints they are?"
Mary nodded and handed me the computer screen, saying, "Your fingerprints."
"My fingerprints?" I finally understood why Mary had reacted so strongly earlier. My fingerprints had been found on the body of the deceased, which took me completely by surprise. At the same time, I felt that by the time this case unfolded here, we had already lost control over it; everything had come too suddenly.
From the very beginning, someone had stolen my police badge and used my phone number to call Wu Shuhau, which led to the deaths of both Wu Shuhau and Wu Jianye. Now, my fingerprints were discovered at the crime scene. I hurried to look into the details of the case, hoping to find some clues.
The incident occurred in a hotel in Jing City. The victim was named Xing Jie, a staff member at the hotel. He was found dead in the hotel restroom this afternoon, drowned in a toilet. Based on the scene's analysis, it appeared that while Xing Jie was using the restroom around noon, he slipped on the wet tiles and accidentally fell into the toilet.
His head struck the wall opposite the toilet, rendering him unconscious. Then, while he was unconscious, his face fell forward into a mixture of toilet water and urine several centimeters deep. Thus, Xing Jie died in the toilet. Since it was noon, most of the hotel staff were out for lunch, and there were hardly any customers around.
If someone had discovered Xing Jie sooner, he likely would not have died. If he hadn't hit his head against the toilet, he also would not have died. Everything seemed like an accident—if not for the death note found in a trash bin in the restroom.
The note read: "Death is never far away."
Director Wang decided to combine this case with three others for investigation. During the forensic examination phase, Juan Juan, being a senior forensic expert, was allowed to assist as an exception. As a result of this discovery, it turned out that fingerprints were found on the victim's neck—my fingerprints.
All ten of my fingerprints were clear and arranged in a circular pattern: four from the front and two from the back. It looked as if I had once strangled the victim. The estimated time of death coincided with when I was traveling from Jing City to Yuzhou City; I certainly had time to commit the crime.
Who could have done this? What was their purpose? How did they obtain all ten of my fingerprints? I closed my eyes and rubbed my temples with my fingers, reflecting on everything that had happened since I arrived in Jing City and all the people I had interacted with.
I first came to Jing City because Old Wang and his team requested it. If this case was targeting me specifically, then someone within the system must have known I would be coming; otherwise, how could a random killer know that our Special Investigation Team would arrive in Jing City? This thought sent a chill down my spine.
This deduction suggested that there might be someone connected to the killer within our ranks! This theory was truly chilling. An enemy is not frightening; what is terrifying is when that enemy is right beside you and you don't know who they are. I sensed that this case had already spiraled out of control after Xu Rong; if there was indeed someone connected to the killer inside our team, returning would be tantamount to walking into a trap.
I carefully considered this possibility: stealing my police badge, stealing my SIM card, extracting my fingerprints and creating models for use in committing crimes—all of these actions pointed suspicion toward me. It was a masterful act of deception. And after all this was done, I had no leads whatsoever.
"What should we do next?" Mary said anxiously. "The entire Jing City is now hunting for you! Should we go back and explain everything? I've been with you this whole time; I can prove your innocence."
I frowned and pondered for a long time before shaking my head and replying, "The problem is that aside from our Special Investigation Team, who else would believe us? First of all, we violated regulations by fleeing Jing City; secondly, this incident occurred while we were driving on the road. The surveillance can prove that this vehicle was moving but cannot confirm how many people were inside it. Do you understand what I mean?"
Mary nodded seriously at my words.
I continued, "And think about it, we have only just arrived in Jing City for a short time. The first case, the Xu Rong Case, was right after we got here, and immediately someone used a gathering to target me for a crime. It has only been a day; who could possibly have a complete grasp of our Special Investigation Team's movements? How did the Killer know in advance that I would definitely enter the gathering? Think about it carefully."
Following my line of thought, Mary also realized what I had just considered. She opened her mouth and took a while before saying, "So you mean, there is someone infiltrating our ranks? This isn't an individual act but a premeditated attack against you? One person is responsible for monitoring our Special Investigation Team's movements while another is outside fabricating the crime?"
I nodded seriously and said, "That’s likely the case. But even so, we still need to investigate based on the relationships among the three individuals. I believe that since the Killer has killed these people and wants to frame me, there must be a complete and coherent motive behind it. No one would believe that I would randomly kill someone; what we need to do now is clarify what motive the Killer has set up for me."
Mary nodded and asked with some concern, "Then Sister Juan and Dezi in the Police Department should be safe, right?"
"They will be fine," I said firmly. "No matter how rampant the Killer is, they wouldn't dare to kill within the Police Department; they are definitely safe. However, from now on, they cannot leave the Police Department even for a moment. The next steps depend on us: first, we need to find the external Killer; second, we need to uncover who the mole inside is."
Mary looked at me and suddenly smiled with relief, saying, "If that's the case, it sounds quite thrilling. And there's a third point—we also have to evade the pursuit of Jing City's police. I thought such plots only happened in movies; I didn't expect it to happen to us."
"Don't worry; no one knows better how to evade police tracking than a police officer," I said with a smile. "The first step is to drive this sports car out to a remote area and then find a new car for transportation. For this part, I’m afraid I’ll have to trouble you as the daughter of this French Boss."
Mary nodded and gave an OK sign. Then I added, "The second point is to replace all communication devices that could lead them to us with new ones and then help us find new identities." As I spoke, I returned Mary's computer and said, "This part will also require your assistance."
On my first trip at sea, I encountered a well-known Bengal Aid Worker. Young and impulsive, but too poor to really make a move until the First Mate told me that a bag of instant noodles could get me through the night with a group of women...
