Half an hour later.
The world is chaotic, and life is filled with sorrow. The moment we joined the Special Investigation Team, or even when we became police officers, we became people who disregard life and death. I have witnessed too much death; I have seen more corpses than living beings. I have spent more time in darkness than in sunlight.
Indeed.
"What’s the situation?" I asked the doctor.
The doctor looked at me and slowly replied, "This is the best outcome we could hope for: a vegetative state. You need to prepare yourself for the possibility that she may never wake up. Do you understand? She lost a lot of blood and suffered severe brain hypoxia. If it weren't for the timely emergency response, she might have already died. This is the best we could do; I'm sorry."
I nodded. Yes, this was indeed the best conclusion. A vegetative state means there is still a chance she could wake up, right?
As long as she isn’t dead, there is hope, isn’t there?
"Is she your daughter?" The doctor glanced at the little girl holding my hand, wearing a hat, and spoke slowly. But then he sighed softly, seemingly feeling pity for such a young girl whose mother had fallen into this state so early.
I remained silent, neither nodding nor shaking my head.
The little girl finally spoke up after the doctor walked away. "Uncle Shao, what happened to Sister Juanjuan?"
I said, "Sister Juanjuan is having a very long dream. We don’t know when she will wake up. When she does, shall we ask her to tell us about her dream?"
"Yes! That sounds great!" The little girl was very happy.
Three hours later.
"The heads of various departments of the Heavenly Domain Organization have been apprehended. We discovered a list of personnel from the Heavenly Domain Organization in an underground warehouse in Yuzhou City."
“International Police arrested Young Master Lin on the small island. It turns out that the one who almost caused our Special Investigation Team to disband, Young Master Lin, is actually the head of the Economic Department of the Heavenly Domain Organization.”
“Zhao Mingkun has escaped again and is currently missing. To catch her, I think it will take a long time.”
“Interestingly, this list was just left on the table, seemingly intended for us to discover.”
Dezi read through the reports sent back from the front, surprised that Zhao Mingkun had managed to escape once more. Who knows when they would meet again? But with Captain Shi dead and all the major ministers captured, it was nearly impossible for the Heavenly Domain Organization to turn things around.
A month later.
I walked out of Li the Tiger’s office. The elderly Vice Minister, with his graying hair and spirited demeanor, asked, “Have you thought it through? You’re leaving your important position in the department to work under Li the Tiger. You don’t even want to be deputy director? Just a file manager? That seems like a waste of talent. Are you really not considering it?”
I shook my head and replied, “No, being a file manager is fine. Too much has happened recently; I want to take a break.”
The Vice Minister seemed ready to say more, but Li the Tiger tapped his fingers on the desk and gently said, “As for Juan Juan, there’s nothing we can do, but we will cover the expenses…”
The Vice Minister understood what Li the Tiger meant. He shook his head and said, “Alright then. We were able to capture the entire Heavenly Domain Organization thanks to your efforts.”
“I installed a tracker in the engraved stone; the receiver is on Mary’s computer,” I explained. “I knew that Heavenly Domain Organization would be looking for me, so I prepared for it when I returned from Italy. I didn’t expect it would actually come in handy.”
“I never imagined that the leader of the Heavenly Domain Organization would be Shi Huacheng,” sighed the Vice Minister. “He used to be the best cop.”
I said, “I thought about it for a long time before realizing why Shi Huacheng was looking for me.”
“Why?” asked the Vice Minister.
"Because he hoped I could stop him," I said, furrowing my brow. "I tampered with the engraved stone; there's no way he wouldn't notice."
"He used to be the best cop," I added.
The Vice Minister and Li the Tiger exchanged glances but said nothing.
Yes, I thought for a long time about why the Heavenly Domain Organization still wanted me involved. At first, I believed it was Shi Huacheng who wanted me to join the Heavenly Domain Organization, hoping I could assist him. But later, I realized that Shi Huacheng wanted me there because he wanted me to see Little Stone in his final moments.
Eventually, I understood. This was a struggle between a police officer and a father, both of whom were Shi Huacheng himself. As a father, he would do anything for Little Stone, but deep down, he knew he was a police officer and that he couldn't act that way.
So when I excitedly threw Little Stone into his hands, he could sense something was off about the stone but chose to remain silent.
Perhaps at that moment, he found a glimpse of his former self.
Two months later.
On New Year's Eve, I invited my parents and Juan Juan's parents over to my home.
"I'm going to check on Juan Juan," I said.
"Go after you finish eating," my family replied.
"No, I'll go now," I insisted.
"It's snowing; be careful on the road," they warned.
"Uncle, I'm going with you," the little girl with a ponytail said to me.
"Sure!" I picked up Little Stone and let her ride on my shoulders.
"Uncle!" Little Stone said unhappily, "The kids in my class always say things about me."
"What do they say?" I asked.
Little Stone pouted, tears of grievance streaming down her cheeks. "They all say I'm a child without parents."
I paused for a moment, then continued walking, saying, "From now on, I will be your dad, and Sister Juanjuan will be your mom. Do you understand?"
Little Stone nodded, somewhat confused.
Snowflakes danced down, landing on our shoulders and heads.
A year later.
Mary and Dezi decided to hold their wedding on a small island in the Atlantic.
This island was purchased by Mary; she had expressed this wish long ago, saying that after retiring, she would buy a small island in the Atlantic to live with the person she loved most. During the day, she would swim, fish, and enjoy the sea; at night, she would read, write, and tell stories.
But retiring at this age seemed a bit too early.
Mary said, "Look at you; you're still superstitious. When I told you there are ghosts in this world, you didn't believe me. When I told you there are mysterious forces at play, you also didn't believe me. When I mentioned that there are things in this world that science can't explain yet, you called it superstition."
"Well, how can you say you took a long time to choose the date for this wedding? It's superstitious!"
Dezi retorted, "Don't say that! I didn't choose the date; I just pointed it out casually, and everyone said it was a good day. Besides, there are no ghosts in this world, no mysterious powers, nothing beyond the realm of science!"
"Oh really? Are you trying to argue with me? I'll bring out the evidence right now!"
"Come on! We should believe in science!"
What was supposed to be a beautiful wedding turned into a debate.
I wonder which side the child of a materialist and an idealist would lean towards.
Two years later.
"The joint experts from China and the U.S. have already researched some aspects of this disease," Li the Tiger said, pointing at a box. "It's this. Every night when you go to sleep, let Little Stone drink a bottle of what's inside. It won't cure her, but it can extend her life. Perhaps in ten years, this disease won't even be considered cancer anymore."
I looked at the small blue medicine bottle in my hand and nodded.
Li the Tiger sighed and said, "I wonder how Shi Huacheng would feel knowing this day has come. Would he regret it?"
"It's been so long; let's not mention him. By the way, do you know what your group's contact person, A-Bao, has been up to lately?" Li the Tiger mentioned A-Bao with an inscrutable expression on his face.
I asked curiously, "I haven't heard from him in ages. What has he been doing?"
"I heard that guy recently wrote about his undercover life. A company bought the rights to it, and I heard they're making a TV series now!" Li the Tiger shrugged.
Life is truly unpredictable.
Five years later.
Juan Juan on the bed still showed no signs of waking up.
The doctor told me that five years had passed, and it was very likely that the patient would never wake up again.
I held Juan Juan's hand, saying nothing.
I was going to marry her; Juan Juan had waited for me for seven years. I would wait for Juan Juan for another seven years, or even a lifetime.
Seven years later.
As I pushed open the door to the archive room, I found Little Stone waiting for me after school. I greeted her, but saw that she was seriously bent over the table, casually flipping through an old file, completely engrossed. I thought to myself, in such a large archive room, how could this little girl not be afraid alone? With that in mind, I tiptoed behind her and casually glanced at the file she was reading. It turned out she was looking at a bizarre case that happened over a decade ago in Niulan Village.
At that time, I had just become a detective, and it was my first case.
I gently tapped her shoulder.
The little girl immediately executed a hold to try to subdue me.
"Well, look at you! Using the skills I taught you against me!" I said with a laugh.
"Do you remember what day it is today?" I asked.
"Today is your and Mom's anniversary!" Little Stone said.
"Then why aren't we leaving?" I replied.
Hand in hand, we walked towards the hospital. Little Stone asked, "Dad, will Mom wake up?"
I asked, "You're already in Junior High School. Do you have any plans for the future?"
"Yes!" Little Stone said earnestly. "I want to be a police officer, just like you and Mom!"
I smiled.
She will.
They all will.
