Chapter 9 Ancestor Sun
As soon as Sun Chendong's words fell, Lin Feiyu and Lin Nan looked at Lian Yun with deep sorrow.
Both of them came from prestigious families, well-protected and endowed with exceptional talents. They had never engaged in reckless behavior like Sun Chendong, nor had they experienced the torment of a Ghost Slave's soul scattering.
However, they were well aware of who Sun Chendong was. If the mere loss of three Ghost Slaves caused him such unbearable pain, then what kind of agony did Lian Yun endure three years ago when he lost nineteen Ghost Slaves all at once?
Moreover, Lian Yun was only thirteen at that time, and he lost not only the nineteen Ghost Slaves but also his own talent and his parents.
Considering all this, Lin Feiyu and Lin Nan found it impossible to comprehend how Lian Yun managed to persevere through such suffering.
This was a thought that sent chills down their spines.
Yet, even without delving into the internal struggles, they could not understand how Lian Yun maintained such a calm and serene demeanor outwardly.
Seeing the distress in Lin Feiyu and Lin Nan's eyes, Lian Yun shook his head helplessly but smiled gently as he said, "I know that no matter how the world treats me or what I become, the love from my grandmother and you will never change. That's how I've managed to hold on!"
"Thank you!" Lin Nan said for the second time, his eyes reddened with emotion.
Lin Feiyu was also extremely moved; however, his self-control was better, so he merely nodded without saying much.
Sun Chendong still seemed unable to understand, shaking his head slightly. Nevertheless, this did not diminish his respect for Lian Yun.
"Brother Sun's spirit has been wounded and is not fully recovered; it is unwise to acquire new Ghost Slaves!" Lian Yun kindly reminded him.
Sun Chendong nodded. "I understand. I'm just here to scout for potential candidates in the coming days! I have no intention of signing any contracts!"
"Brother Yun is here to find a candidate? May I accompany you?"
It was Sun Chendong's repeated mention of "candidates" that led Lin Nan to believe his preferences were skewed, prompting earlier teasing remarks.
Seeing the eager look in Sun Chendong's eyes, Lian Yun felt reluctant to refuse. Thus, despite Lin Nan's slight dissatisfaction, their trio became a quartet.
With this addition, their group attracted even more attention.
However, the four of them continued their conversation as if no one else was around. It was primarily Lin Nan asking questions and Sun Chendong answering, while Lian Yun and Lin Feiyu listened attentively.
“Dongzi, how strong is the Demon Emperor you’re facing?”
“Unmatched. If it weren't for the three beloved generals sacrificing themselves to protect me, Chen Dong would probably not have survived!”
“Unmatched? Is that still a low-level Demon Emperor?” Lin Nan scoffed.
“It is indeed a low-level Demon Emperor, a naturally grown one. It’s on a completely different level compared to the artificially enhanced Demon Emperors from some training grounds in our capital. In those training grounds, Chen Dong could contend with Ding Shang Ghost Emperor; although he wouldn’t win, he wouldn’t be completely defeated either.”
“However, in the wild, even a Low-Level Ghost Emperor is an existence that Chen Dong cannot match!”
Sun Chendong cast a respectful glance at Lian Yun.
This was because three years ago, Lian Yun had repelled an incredibly powerful Second-Rank Ghost Emperor in the wild!
It was only when compared that one realized the difference.
“You went out of the city without anyone from your family protecting you?” Lin Nan asked, a hint of anger in his voice.
However, Sun Chendong shook his head resolutely and said, “If we are always sheltered by our elders, how can we grow and surpass those before us?”
“But last time, as you mentioned, Chen Dong went out secretly. If you don’t court disaster, you won’t meet it!” Sun Chendong said with a bitter expression.
Yet Lian Yun and the others looked at him with newfound respect.
It should be noted that his family was not weaker than the Lin family, and he himself was quite exceptional. Coupled with his diligent nature and this mindset, it was truly commendable.
At the very least, Lin Nan did not possess such awareness.
Thus, while Lin Nan felt respect for him, he also felt a sense of frustration as he reluctantly admitted for the first time that he truly was not as good as the other.
Sun Chendong's mood recovered quickly; seeing Lian Yun looking at him with some respect made him shyly lower his head and smile.
Her demeanor resembled that of a shy maiden, which made it no surprise that Lin Nan would think her orientation was unusual.
"I wonder what Brother Yun's goals are. Chen Dong has been wandering around the Ghost Market for a few days; if there’s a need, perhaps Chen Dong can offer some suggestions."
"I have no specific goals! It starts with admiration and then turns into willingness!"
"Brother Yun remains as he is, which I admire! However, in the Ghost Market, most Spirits are willing to become slaves if someone is willing to buy them. It would be wise for Brother Yun to set some personal goals!"
"Thank you for your guidance, Brother Sun!" Lian Yun said with a respectful gesture.
Previously, Lian Yun had subdued twenty Ghost Slaves he encountered in the wild. Although he had heard much about the Ghost Market, he hadn’t paid attention to the point that Sun Chendong mentioned.
Now that he listened, he realized there was truth in what was said.
While many Spirits might not want to be enslaved, they likely preferred not to be imprisoned at all. Thus, most Spirits would adopt a mindset of becoming slaves if someone was willing to buy them!
As for how many were sincere and how many might betray later, that was impossible to know.
However, regarding Lian Yun's gratitude, Sun Chendong felt unworthy and waved his hands repeatedly, saying, "With Feather Brother and Nan here, even without Chen Dong's words, you two would remind Brother Yun."
"If Brother Sun did not treat me kindly, why would you speak from the heart?"
Seeing Lian Yun express such sentiments left Sun Chendong at a loss for words, though his expression still showed a hint of humility. Suddenly, he seemed to recall something and sighed softly.
Noticing this, Lian Yun understood and smiled gently. "Is it because Ancestor Sun strongly opposed it back then?"
It was rumored that during an ancestral worship ceremony a hundred years ago, Ancestor Sun suddenly appeared. Afterward, the Sun Family concealed their strength for decades before emerging powerfully, achieving a status equal to that of the Lin Family today.
Ancestor Sun was an ancient military strategist and tactician—Sun Bin. He was one of the few who held a high position in the alliance as a Spirit.
From observing Sun Chendong's character, one could tell that a family capable of raising such a principled descendant must possess commendable virtues themselves.
Sun Chendong nodded but chose not to elaborate further.
It was simply because, no matter how things were in the beginning, the outcome had already been determined and was difficult to change; no amount of regret would help.
However, Lian Yun still smiled and said, "If I have the chance, I must personally visit to express my gratitude for the care shown by Sun Ancestor!"
"Haha! The family ancestor often scolds Brother Yun, saying that Brother Yun was foolish and ignorant back then, not knowing how to escape or understand the importance of preserving the green mountains to avoid worrying about firewood!"
"Haha!"
Lian Yun, Lin Feiyu, and Lin Nan all shared a knowing smile.
Although it was scolding, the affection and eagerness for talent from Sun Ancestor were clearly felt by the three.
The phrase "often scolds" evidently reflected Sun Ancestor's eagerness for talent. Especially the mention of "back then" indicated that Sun Ancestor still felt regret for Lian Yun.
The four of them enjoyed a lively conversation, filled with warmth and camaraderie.
Not long after, they noticed another person approaching from ahead!
