Chapter 18: The Final Moment
In just half the time, Yang Zai Xing had unleashed a number of full-force strikes that, under normal circumstances, might have taken three months to achieve. Yet, due to the continuous nature of his efforts, the enhancement he gained could hardly be compared to what one might accumulate in three years.
The gains were undeniably significant.
However, despite all this, he was still just a hair's breadth away from a breakthrough.
It was truly just a mere thread.
With this in mind, Lian Yun decided to lend him a helping hand. Success would be ideal, but failure was acceptable; as long as there was enough time to accumulate experience, Yang Zai Xing's breakthrough would not pose a significant problem.
Thus, Lian Yun and Yang Zai Xing simultaneously ceased their battle to adjust themselves. Lian Yun even took a small sip of Mental Potion.
Once prepared, Lian Yun remained stationary while Yang Zai Xing rode Yan Lie to the edge of the plaza, gathering momentum. At that moment, Lian Yun summoned Guardian History and Three Hundred Sword Souls, which began to swirl around Yang Zai Xing.
As Yan Lie took a step forward, Yang Zai Xing raised his spear. Simultaneously, three hundred Soul Swords converged towards his Soul Lance, instantly transforming it into a massive lance.
Then Yan Lie charged forward. Utilizing Sword Control Technique, Lian Yun propelled and accelerated Yang Zai Xing's speed.
In an instant that the Insect Emperor failed to notice or react to, Yang Zai Xing struck at the Year Beast with his spear.
The entire Year Beast BSS was nearly knocked away, bursting open like a treasure chest, revealing over twenty Golden Treasure Boxes.
Not only that, but Yang Zai Xing's strike also had follow-up effects; thanks to Lian Yun's Vibrational Force, as Yang Zai Xing's Lance remained embedded in the Year Beast's body, waves of Vibrational Force surged forth one after another.
Twenty or so treasure chests dropped one after another, which essentially meant that he had acquired forty chests in one move—a tremendous gain.
"What the hell..."
The Insect Emperor was taken aback, but this time he felt no pain in his heart. Instead, he looked at Lian Yun with a glimmer of desire to take him as a disciple.
Indeed, Lian Yun had comprehended the Vibrational Force on his own. However, the essence he had grasped was not something that could be easily taught by an ordinary person. Yet Lian Yun had managed to 'steal' the knowledge. Although his understanding of the Vibrational Force might not be as profound as that of the general, it was perhaps just a tiny bit higher than that of the Insect Emperor.
What mattered most was that he believed if he imparted just a little to Lian Yun, he could completely let him be, confident that Lian Yun would not bring shame to his teachings.
A disciple who required no supervision was quite a relief, wasn't it?
However, Lian Yun was oblivious to the Insect Emperor's wandering thoughts. He swiftly moved to Yang Zai Xing's side and brought the incapacitated Yang Zai Xing into the Yin-Yang Stage. Then he collected about ten Soul Sword Fragments and over a hundred Soul Swords before unleashing a hundred and one Ten Soul Swords to attack the Year Beast.
Lian Yun felt no pain when ten or so Soul Swords shattered because they could be reforged. However, the breaking of the Soul Swords did inflict some mental damage on him. To recover from this, Lian Yun took a small sip of Mental Potion.
For now, there were no major events occurring.
The general and Yang Yanzhao were limited by their speed and realm; even though their strength continued to rise, their rate of killing Year Beasts did not increase significantly. Thus, Lian Yun adjusted himself again, recalibrating their killing rate to find a balance.
Lian Yun's Sword Control occupied two-thirds of the square while he and the general along with Yang Yanzhao took up the remaining third. This way, although Lian Yun had to divide his focus—resulting in greater consumption of Mental Power—he could ensure that the general's killing rate reached its maximum potential.
Another minute passed, and this time there was less attacking and movement from Yang Zai Xing.
The Insect Emperor seemed to be stimulated by something, attacking with increasing violence and speed. In just a minute, he could produce a Golden Treasure Box. At this rate, he could obtain over fourteen hundred Golden Treasure Boxes in no time, and the pace might even accelerate further.
Thus, this time, the Insect Emperor's gains would undoubtedly exceed expectations. Moreover, he had yet to use the Mental Potion, which meant he hadn't unleashed his full attacking power.
From the dreamy smile on his face, it was clear he was calculating that he might end up with four or five thousand boxes. If he won the bet, that would add another six thousand, totaling over ten thousand Golden Treasure Boxes—more than his harvest from the past three years. Just thinking about it made the Insect Emperor feel a bit lightheaded.
However, being a Peerless Monarch, the Insect Emperor did not let himself get carried away. It seemed he had his own plans; at the last moment, he suddenly gathered his strength and shouted, "Protector, my precious disciple!" He then unleashed a powerful strike.
With one punch, he produced hundreds of Golden Treasure Boxes while releasing all his spiritual energy and Insect Qi. However, he then spat out a mouthful of foul blood and collapsed to the ground.
Lian Yun waved his hand and absorbed all the Deep Blue Energy.
"Old Bug!" The general exclaimed as he rushed to the Insect Emperor's side, worry etched on his face. He poured his own Mental Potion into the Insect Emperor's mouth.
Lian Yun also stepped forward, channeling his Spiritual Energy into the Insect Emperor while asking with concern, "Senior, do you need anything?"
Yet the Insect Emperor surprisingly did not acknowledge Lian Yun's kindness; instead, he looked at the general with a pale but gratified smile.
After a moment, he somewhat ungraciously pushed Lian Yun aside and took out a Diamond Spirit Coin to absorb its energy.
For someone like the Insect Emperor, a Peerless Expert who displayed such vulnerability in front of others was an immense sign of trust. As for any other attitude displayed, it could only mean that the Insect Emperor was truly lacking in character.
Moreover, entrusting his back to Lian Yun earlier was akin to placing his life in Lian Yun's hands.
Lian Yun felt somewhat speechless, yet he didn't care much and certainly wasn't angry. Instead, he sat down beside himself to meditate and cultivate.
As for the outside world, whether in the human realm of the Twelve Cities or the underground domain of the Demon Clan, chaos had erupted.
The first place, Bai Yun, had been on a wild streak since the second place began to rise, surpassing Xiao Jun, and had never been overtaken since.
The rankings below third place fluctuated frequently, but even the third place was only half as strong as Xiao Jun, let alone compared to Bai Yun.
It turned out that even the first place, Bai Yun, was not invincible.
Even Lan Ruoxuan from Azure Pavilion wore a look of disbelief, while Azure Drift was so shocked that she covered her mouth. "Earlier, when I heard Lian Yun wanted Xin'er to learn from his Ghost Slave, I thought he was being a bit arrogant."
"Yes! But eighth place!" Lan Ruoxuan pondered thoughtfully.
Lian Yun's performance was indeed astonishing, but for him to push the general to eighth place, Lan Ruoxuan still found it hard to believe.
However, Azure Drift's eyes lit up with a mix of reluctance and excitement as she exclaimed, "Could it be the Insect Emperor?"
