Chapter 6: Assassination and Arrival
From then on, almost every five miles, a wave of bandits could be encountered. However, when Lian Yun revealed his name, the bandits recognized his appearance and left him alone, allowing him to pass through without incident.
But at fifty miles, an unexpected turn of events occurred: the bandits launched a direct assassination attempt on Lian Yun.
You see, the Emperor had constructed Yin Yang City based on ancient geography. After walking for a while, Lian Yun decided to take a detour to see what the once-familiar Huaxia Land looked like now.
On a path through a dense forest, he came across a carriage with a broken wheel. An elderly man and his grandson were anxiously scanning their surroundings, seemingly afraid of some fierce beast attacking them, yet reluctant to abandon their cart full of cheap goods.
Upon seeing Lian Yun, the two were highly alert. However, as Lian Yun walked past, the old man couldn't help but ask, "May I inquire where you are headed? Could you assist this Old Farmer with a favor?"
Just as Lian Yun stopped and turned around, seven or eight assassins sprang out from both sides, reaching him in the blink of an eye.
Yet Lian Yun simply stepped forward, leaving behind seven or eight lifeless bodies. As he approached the boy, the old man's head fell from his shoulders. Lian Yun calmly looked at the boy and said, "Go back and tell your master that if he wants to kill me, he needs to send more than just Monarch."
"Yes! Make sure he sends several more so that one or two won't be enough."
Ignoring the boy's terrified expression, Lian Yun leisurely turned and walked away.
This place was far from Famous City; it was unlikely anyone would transport goods over such a long distance for mere money. Moreover, although the old man and boy appeared poor, their aura was deep and profound. The old man's demeanor was extremely restrained, yet his tone suggested a background of wealth.
Thus, upon seeing the pair, Lian Yun sensed an assassination plot. While he was not afraid, he still took precautions. His Soul Sword was already prepared; when the enemy thought they had succeeded and let their guard down, that would be their moment of demise.
As for instilling fear in his enemies to prevent them from preparing too much—if they were not frightened, they would continue to harass him endlessly. Therefore, Lian Yun made sure to leave behind some harsh words.
After walking over twenty miles, encounters with bandits became rare. However, Chaos Beasts began to appear in large numbers. Initially, they were quite powerful and very close to Monarch level. But as he continued approaching Ten Thousand Swords Sect, the strength of the Chaos Beasts gradually diminished.
Lian Yun understood this point as well.
Many Major Powers do not choose the locations for their Fortresses haphazardly; instead, they often select areas that are relatively dense with Chaos Beasts. This not only allows them to cultivate their members but also enables timely rescue efforts when needed.
However, even a powerful faction like the Xianjian Sect, considered one of the top ten sects, would not dare to establish a Fortress near areas where numerous Royal-Level Chaos Soul Beasts gather. This is because a Fortress will inevitably face a certain degree of Chaos Beast Tide attacks after some time. Although a faction may have many strong individuals, valuable items, and even rent formidable forces like the Terracotta Army or Ghostly Guard, they cannot withstand the disadvantage in numbers.
As Lian Yun approached within ten miles of the Xianjian Sect, he encountered several Disciples of the Sword Spirit Sect, either hunting Chaos Beasts alone or in groups. There was basically no competition for kills or mutual hostility; however, not many paid attention to Lian Yun. It seemed everyone was very focused on their own growth.
Only a few who had completed their tasks and were preparing to return to their sect glanced at Lian Yun with interest.
One plump man walked over to Lian Yun with enthusiasm and smiled, "Brother, you look unfamiliar. Which peak do you belong to?"
Lian Yun was somewhat puzzled; why was he being called 'brother' by someone he didn't know?
The man seemed sharp and quickly expressed surprise, "Are you not from our Sect?"
Lian Yun nodded but immediately felt numerous angry and rejecting gazes directed at him from around.
Confused by this reaction, Lian Yun asked, "I am Bai Yun. Is this the way to the Xianjian Sect?"
Due to playing around on the road, Lian Yun strayed from the main path, but the direction was still correct. However, he sensed that the people around seemed quite unfriendly towards outsiders, prompting his question.
The plump man was taken aback for a moment, then his body trembled with excitement. He said, "Yes, yes, yes! This is indeed our Xianjian Sect."
Looking around, the plump man explained, "Brother Baiyun might have misunderstood. There was an incident in the past where disciples of our Sect were slaughtered, which led to regulations being established. The northern and southern areas are exclusive to Sect disciples, while the eastern and western sides are where outsiders can stay."
"When I saw you coming from deeper within, I wondered who you were. Knowing you are not from our Sect is why the brothers around here displayed hostility."
I see, Lian Yun nodded apologetically to those around him, who responded with curiosity or nods in return.
At this moment, the plump man stepped forward and asked curiously, "May I ask why Brother Baiyun came from this direction?"
"It’s my first time out of the city; I wandered around a bit and accidentally strayed from the main path. But according to my sense of direction, I should be fine," he replied.
The plump man's face trembled significantly this time—not with excitement but with discomfort.
In the wild, there are often special Royal-Level Chaos Soul Beasts roaming about. Ordinary people would hardly dare to wander in such places; even on relatively safer main roads, they would hurry along without lingering. It seemed that only those like you extraordinary individuals could have such a mindset.
"May I ask your esteemed name?"
"I dare not boast; I am Xiao Chengzhong. It’s an honor to meet Brother Baiyun."
"Likewise, it’s a pleasure to meet Brother Xiao."
"Haha! They're just distant relatives, nothing more," Xiao Chengzhong suddenly said with a hint of melancholy.
This left Lian Yun somewhat puzzled, but he quickly realized it must be related to his connection with Xiao Jun. He nodded slightly and chose not to say more.
Soon, after climbing a Sword Mountain, Lian Yun found himself gazing at a vast plain. In the center of the plain stood twelve towering steel giants, each one a hundred meters tall. They were arranged in a circular formation, their faces turned outward, as if guarding the expansive land behind them.
Their imposing figures struck a powerful presence; some stood with their hands clasped behind their backs, others held massive swords in front of them with both hands resting on the hilt, while a few knelt on one knee.
These were robots, one of the Three Major Troops of Yin Yang City. Though few in number, each possessed at least High Emperor-level combat power. Due to their enormous size and metallic composition, they were incredibly strong—ordinary High Emperors were no match for them.
Between the twelve giant robots, Lian Yun could vaguely see some figures flying through the air using Sword Control.
Noticing Lian Yun's astonished expression, Xiao Chengzhong proudly declared, "Among all the factions, only our Xianjian Sect possesses twelve robots."
"Can everyone in your Xianjian Sect fly using Sword Control?" Lian Yun asked.
Sword Control flight had once been his greatest desire. Now that he saw so many people capable of it, it was no wonder Lian Yun was so shocked.
