"Zii!!!"
A piercing shriek echoed in an instant, waves of sound sweeping across everything in their path.
"Even if you have help, you will never escape my power of the Holy Rune, Tartus!"
Tartus roared, his already taut nerves suddenly erupting. It no longer mattered what lay before him; anyone daring to appear here at this moment was an enemy.
"Take away my burden, let it burn in your light—Light of Hope! Akefreyburdenandburniinhyligh!!!"
As he thrust his staff forcefully into the ground, the deep and rapid incantation reverberated through the night sky, echoing across the desolate land.
"Boom!"
The crystal atop his staff suddenly erupted with a scorching and dazzling Radiance.
"Damn it!"
Ye Kai's eyes watered in an instant; the white light was blindingly bright. Cursing under his breath, he quickly donned his helmet.
"Ahhhh... Zzz... Roar!!!"
Amidst the cries of agony, accompanied by the acrid stench of decaying flesh, a deafening roar erupted.
Though Tartus's face betrayed no emotion, it was clear he was shaken. After such a grand display of power, his eyes had grown dim and murky.
In human society, he was considered quite old, yet he had managed to capture most of the Otherworldly strongmen during his lifetime—a feat that many Demon Hunter predecessors had failed to accomplish.
But he was not satisfied. He envied the vitality of those Otherworldly beings; nearly every race could easily live for over a hundred years, intensifying his desire for immortality.
Now, as long as he could capture the last Elder of the Bluebloods before him, he might very well uncover the secret to immortality.
But just at that moment, a massive Otherworldly being suddenly burst in. Tartus felt a surge of brutality rise within him, and without hesitation, he unleashed the full power of his Holy Rune.
Standing behind him, five or six elderly men with white hair were enveloped in a soft glow, shielding themselves from the blinding light.
One particularly tall man with a bushy beard trembled as he raised an exquisite Ivory Pistol.
“Bang!”
There was no catastrophic clash as Ye Kai had imagined, nor any bloody slaughter; only a silvery bullet was fired, leaving behind a towering monster engulfed in flames amidst the abandoned factory.
The crackling flames hissed continuously, while the glowing mist howled desperately, its roars powerful enough to shatter eardrums.
After more than ten seconds, the enormous creature that Ye Kai had barely glimpsed was completely consumed by the flames with a thunderous roar, turning into swirling ashes.
Though Tartus felt utterly exhausted, he forced himself to suppress the overwhelming fatigue and reached for the staff still emitting a faint white light. “Aining, do you have any tricks left? If not—”
Before he could finish, his body jolted violently, and an intense pain surged through him, leaving him stunned as he was uncontrollably propelled forward.
“Bang! Bang!”
Tartus flew several meters before crashing into two dilapidated metal frames and fell to the ground with a thud. Blood poured from his eyes, ears, mouth, and nose at that moment, and the staff slipped from his grasp.
Yet he did not die or lose consciousness. Instead, after spitting out a mouthful of blood, he shakily reached out for the staff lying a few meters away.
“Tartus, your ambition and your reign of terror are over. Did you really think the Elders wouldn’t notice your research on ‘immortality’?”
An elderly woman clad in a White Robe stepped forward, holding a long staff. As she tapped it against the ground rhythmically, she slowly approached Aining of the Bluebloods, who had already fallen unconscious.
She slowly opened her mouth again, "Whether it's the Bluebloods or other Otherworldly genes, and the experimental subjects in this town, your greed has already caused too much death, enough to provoke everyone's dissatisfaction."
"Cough, cough!"
Tartus struggled to move a few times and realized that this time he might truly be at his limit. However, as one of the elders who had presided over the Demon Hunter Guild for many years and was the most powerful among them, he could not simply give up.
"Emira, I never expected it would be you who betrayed me in the end!"
"Regarding your increasingly insane behavior, after discussions among the elders, we have decided to revoke your position as an elder of the Demon Hunter Guild and reclaim all your Holy Runes."
Emira slightly raised her long staff, pointing the sharp end at the unconscious Bluebloods Aining, and slowly said, "This world does not need immortals, nor does it need a mad and terrifying oppressive regime. It does not need you..."
As Emira's words flowed calmly, Ye Kai finally began to understand a bit of the world's inner workings.
It turned out that this so-called Life Crystal was indeed a precious treasure for humans and Demon Hunters alike, but at the same time, it was also something that was regrettable to discard yet tasteless to consume.
This Life Crystal had long been in the hands of the Demon Hunter Guild. However, after years of research, they had made little progress and were completely unable to control the energy within this Life Crystal.
At that moment, Tartus surprisingly insisted on placing the Life Crystal in this town they had set up many years ago, allowing all the townspeople to accept this extremely special Energy Fluctuation.
He intended to use the entire town's residents as experimental subjects to see if he could find a human subject capable of receiving it without experiencing genetic collapse.
For fifty years, all humans capable of unlocking superpowers had successively experienced genetic collapse within three months, ending up as nothing more than a pile of flesh.
However, what followed shocked all the high-ranking members of the Demon Hunter Guild because they discovered that several experimental subjects could actually receive this Energy Fluctuation without being completely rejected.
This revelation sent everyone into a frenzy of joy. Yet at the same time, some Otherworldly beings had already leveraged their racial advantages to discover the Bluebloods' Relic and Life Crystal.
Seeing the situation become increasingly chaotic, with this town turning into a garden for Otherworldly beings, countless Otherworldly rushed in. They understood the wonders of the Life Crystal and were eager to take a share for themselves.
As the situation here was about to spiral out of control, Tartus wielded his authority to suppress all dissenting voices, using the Life Crystal as bait to capture all the powerful Otherworldly beings in one fell swoop.
What Tartus truly desired was the last Blueblood Elder, rumored to possess a lifespan of hundreds of years. He aimed to genetically modify himself with the strongest Blueblood genes on Earth.
He sought immortality!
After decades of experimentation, Tartus had accumulated a wealth of research data and talented personnel; all he lacked was the most powerful Blueblood gene.
“No!!!”
A fierce glint flashed in Tartus's murky eyes as he suddenly roared, “You can't do this! He is the most powerful Blueblood Elder and the only one on Earth! You cannot sever all Elders' desire for immortality!”
“Pfft!”
Emira's gaze remained unfazed as she thrust her staff toward Elder Aining of the Bluebloods' heart, applying a slight force before yanking it out with a swift motion. A splatter of blue blood erupted.
Aining suddenly opened his eyes, which radiated intense unwillingness, deep regret, and fierce hatred. He let out one final, mournful wail: “You will all regret this!”
Though he was a powerful Blueblood, this group of people had long been familiar with the anatomy of his kind. As his heart shattered, his stamina began to dwindle away bit by bit.
