“How much longer do we have to walk? It’s already quite cold here, and we must have walked at least a thousand meters by now,” Ye Kai asked coldly.
Although Ariel, the witch, was leading the way and they might not encounter any dangers, it was still quite frustrating to be walking in circles like this.
He didn’t care much about treasures; he was just here for an adventure. However, he had no idea how much longer they would have to go, and his time was not exactly abundant.
Moreover, he was here for a mission related to Nightmare Space.
It would be best if he could complete it. If not, he would inevitably waste another Nightmare Mark and would have to re-enter.
“This stone staircase… seems endless…” Ariel said with a low chuckle. “This is a legend from the ancient times of the Endless Abyss. It leads to the Eight Hundred Layers of Abyss World.”
Ye Kai scoffed and retorted, “Do you really believe it’s never-ending?”
Ariel smiled faintly but did not respond.
After a while, Ye Kai noticed some changes below and felt a slight lift in his spirits as he leaned in for a closer look.
In the previously sunken Crystal Wall, instead of those bizarre and disgusting creatures, there were now plants emitting a faint glow. Some resembled seaweed, while others looked like ordinary water plants.
Suddenly, his eyes lit up as he quickly walked down several steps. Here, within a one-meter square standard Crystal Wall, there was a palm-sized, delicately crafted mermaid frolicking in the water.
She had nearly perfect features, golden hair that shimmered, enchanting blue eyes, and her chest was covered by two equally delicate shells, making her look extraordinarily beautiful.
"Who would have thought there would be a mermaid here..." Ye Kai exclaimed in surprise. "How has she survived in such deep waters?"
"In this place, there are many wonderful things you cannot imagine, and many mysteries that you will find difficult to unravel in your lifetime," Ariel said, pausing briefly before continuing her descent.
"Clang! Clang!"
Although Ye Kai scoffed at the idea, he had never seen such a clever mermaid. He couldn't help but feel intrigued and even took out his dagger to scratch the wall vigorously.
"You've gone mad!!!"
Suddenly, Ariel screamed in panic, "Don't touch anything here without permission; it could bring great disaster!!!"
Ye Kai froze. He hadn't expected that his dagger would only leave two white marks on the wall. As for Ariel's scream, he didn't care much about it. However, her alarm suggested that things might not be as simple as they seemed.
"It's just a fish tank; it's meant for keeping fish. What disaster could it possibly bring? By the way, why are they sealed up? How have they managed to survive all this time?"
After considering for a moment, Ariel seemed eager to dissuade him from his thoughts and quickly explained, "This is the site of an ancient Divine Cult. Everything sealed within the Crystal Wall was part of a simple ritual."
"The doctrine of this cult believed that if unique creatures were sealed away to slowly die inside until they completely rotted and merged with the other materials within, even their souls would blend together. This could potentially give birth to creatures closest to divinity."
"When the time comes to open the seal, everything inside would be consumed—the flesh and blood of the creatures along with their souls—thus revealing the secret to immortality. It could also serve as a sacrifice to worship the deities."
"What a ridiculous practice! And what about the creatures that aren't sealed? After they die, could new creatures emerge from them? The time required for such births isn't just a couple of hundred years, is it?"
Ye Kai rolled his eyes in exasperation. "No wonder they all disappeared into the river of time; turns out they were all part of some evil cult!"
Although they were all 'scientists' from ancient times, this behavior left Ye Kai speechless. He couldn't help but wonder if these Creatures truly emerged from decaying bodies.
After such a long time, the only thing they could have eaten was...
Ugh!
He had thought the mermaids were exceptionally cute and beautiful, but it turned out they were born this way. Just thinking about it made him feel uncomfortable.
"Without special means, you won't be able to open these Crystal Walls. Even if you could, you need to be cautious. There are many unclear things inside, and you should know how much trouble they can cause," Ariel said seriously, her face solemn.
'Perhaps I can take some of this and give it to the gods. If it can be reborn and allows the Creatures to survive for so long, then this liquid must be a treasure!'
Ye Kai narrowed his eyes and surveyed the area before quietly marking a spot. He figured that he could always come back alone later to pack everything up; for now, the mission was paramount.
"There are still many strange places from ancient times, especially those crazy cults and nations that have left countless unsolved mysteries on this land. Many bizarre phenomena are unimaginable and inexplicable," Ariel said with a sigh of relief, speaking lightly.
Ye Kai didn't refute her words nor did he fully agree; for a moment, neither of them spoke further as they continued onward.
The temperature was dropping rapidly. A thin layer of frost began to appear on the white metal handrails and walls, and the warm breath of the two formed distinct white lines in the cold air.
"Heart!!!" Suddenly, Ariel turned her head and screamed towards the dark abyss below.
Ye Kai was taken aback and glanced at her before looking down. He saw thick black vines rapidly shooting out from the center of the staircase, clawing their way toward them.
"Ding ding!!!"
Ye Kai swung his dagger, and five or six metallic-glimmering vines were instantly sent flying. However, he was taken aback, realizing that even with his current abilities, it was difficult to sever these vines.
'How is this possible!'
'Why are these vines harder than steel?'
"Retreat!!!"
Ariel's staff emitted beams of light, also sending the vines crashing away, before she hurriedly retreated upward.
After retreating a full fifty meters, the vines flaunted their power for a moment before slowly withdrawing.
"At such a low temperature, how can there be such resilient vines? What are they?" Ye Kai curiously glanced at the unwillingly retreating vines, which left white marks on the wall, and couldn't help but exclaim, "Wow, they're really sharp. If I could obtain them and refine them a bit, they might make for some excellent treasures!"
"These vines are called Devil Vines; they are a terrifying plant used by demons to guard their treasures!" Ariel said in astonishment. "But... there shouldn't be any of them here!"
"What we should consider now is how to deal with them, not why they are here," Ye Kai replied calmly.
Suddenly, he abruptly raised his head to look at the sky.
Although he couldn't see anything, he distinctly heard a faint sound.
"What's wrong?" Ariel asked in surprise.
"Someone is coming," Ye Kai said in a low voice.
"What?" Ariel exclaimed. "Is Meryl here? This is bad; she must have come prepared!"
"Bang!!!"
A dull thud suddenly echoed from above, accompanied by faint cries of surprise.
"Damn it, that fool! You can't just touch anything here!" Hearing the noise, Ariel's face turned ashen, dark energy swirling around her, and she let out a piercing scream.
Just after Ariel's scream, a manic laughter rang out from above: "Hehe, Ariel, did you think I would let you succeed this time? The ancient treasure will belong to me!"
"My dear Ms. Meryl, don't you think I should get a share too? After all, this is the territory of my bloodline. What about you?" A polite male voice chimed in.
"Enough with the chatter! Let's take down the Devil Vine and find the treasure. Is talking here really going to help?" Ye Kai said, sounding somewhat impatient.
We need to find the treasure quickly; everyone can fight for it afterward. This back-and-forth is getting old.
Sure enough, as soon as he said that, everyone fell silent, but the sound of hurried footsteps above grew ever closer.
What he didn't expect was that suddenly a basketball-sized orange fireball shot down toward them.
"Boom!!!"
Ye Kai staggered as the fireball struck the ground, erupting into a shower of sparks. Hovering several meters above, his Dual Eyes suddenly glinted with cold murderous intent: "You're asking for death!!!"
"Ding ding ding!"
A series of metallic clashing sounds echoed in the air, and then with a muffled grunt, Ye Kai abruptly returned to his original position, a hint of mocking coldness curling at the corner of his mouth.
"Holy Rune, you are one of the Holy See's people, damn it..." A man in a classical tailcoat growled in frustration.
"Ariel, you actually colluded with the Holy See? Have you fallen so low? Then hand over the Bloody Origin Stone!" The witch Meryl, dressed in black and with a grim expression, appeared next, her voice sharp and filled with malice.
"Shut your mouth! You're the one who's part of the Holy See; your whole family is part of it! Damn it, do I really look like one of those lunatics from the Holy See?"
Ye Kai impatiently cursed back. "Stop whining! If you had that much time to argue, you should have dealt with the Devil Vine and found the treasure already. What kind of quality is this? No wonder you're being suppressed by those bastards from the Holy See. Truly idiotic."
If he could unleash his full power, he would have gone down alone long ago. Working with these lunatics was such a hassle; they were all acting crazy.
After being berated by Ye Kai, the others were momentarily stunned, their expressions fluctuating between anger and confusion.
However, they soon realized that Ye Kai was almost certainly not one of the Holy See's people; no clergy member would curse their own faith like that.
Just then, as if their commotion had attracted attention, a series of shrieking vines suddenly shot up from below, fiercely lunging toward them.
