Living Funeral
Seeing Zhao Fan in this state, it was clear that he had just suffered at the hands of Huang Kai.
Huang Kai called out to the woman and was about to leave, but she cried even harder.
After Huang Kai left with a few men in black, only the three of us remained. Once Huang Kai was gone, Gao Ling said, "Isn't it just moving a coffin? Why make such a big fuss about it?"
I felt it wasn't that simple. Huang Kai's son had made it clear that this grave must belong to his son.
But why move the coffin?
After Gao Ling spoke, Zhao Fan remarked, "Gao Ling, are you stupid?" As he spoke, he touched his cheek.
Gao Ling had quite a temper too. Seeing Zhao Fan alone, he snapped back, "Zhao Fan, stop pointing fingers at me. I haven't settled the score with you for last time."
Zhao Fan retorted, "Do you believe I could kill you right now?"
Gao Ling replied, "My brother and I could dig a hole here and bury you. Who would know?"
Zhao Fan was about to call his brothers. I knew they were just exchanging insults; Zhao Fan would never actually harm Gao Ling. If anything happened to Gao Ling now, Zhao Fan would be finished—Huang Kai wouldn't let him off the hook.
Seeing through their banter, I said to Zhao Fan, "Stop shouting. If you don't want to die, get to work."
After my words, Zhao Fan glanced at me nervously but surprisingly did not argue back.
Gao Ling said, "Then let's get started."
I replied to Gao Ling, "It's not that simple. Don't act rashly; there's definitely something wrong with this death."
Moreover, I noticed that the soil on the grave had been disturbed; it had clearly been tampered with. I suspected it was Zhao Fan who had done it—and something had gone wrong.
Zhao Fan sighed and said, "You're not wrong. Boss Huang's son died five years ago when he was ten. Now it's been five years, but just recently, Boss Huang's three-year-old daughter also died. Isn't that eerie?"
Gao Ling suddenly realized and asked, "Could there be a connection between the two?"
"Of course there's a connection! Do you know what the bodies buried in that grave look like now?" Zhao Fan's voice trembled slightly with fear, and his pupils contracted.
I asked what they looked like. Zhao Fan replied, "The corpse inside hasn't decayed at all, and the fingernails and hair are still growing. Can you imagine how long hair and nails grow in five years?"
Although it was daytime, Zhao Fan's words sent a chill down my spine.
Moreover, the sun had disappeared, leaving only a gloomy sky.
Gao Ling interjected, "Is it really that eerie? You’re not trying to scare us off so you can pocket the money yourself, are you?"
Honestly, if I hadn't seen the red fingerprints on Zhao Fan's face, I might have believed him. I knew he wouldn't resort to such desperate measures for money, but this time felt different.
Zhao Fan was clearly angered by Gao Ling's comment and retorted, "If I wanted to make money on my own, would I have called you here? One of my brothers has already died because of this matter."
"What? Someone's already dead? Did that corpse turn into a zombie or something?" Gao Ling exclaimed.
Zhao Fan shook his head. "I don't know. All I know is that anyone who came into contact with that corpse ended up dead within two days. And just recently, Boss Huang's daughter also died."
Listening to this bizarre tale while gazing at the freshly turned earth made me wonder if the coffin had been moved once before. I quickly voiced my thought.
Zhao Fan looked at me in surprise and said, "Yes, we did move the coffin once. But after moving it, less than a month passed before both Boss Huang's daughter and my brother died. There has to be a connection with that corpse."
At this point, Gao Ling fell silent.
After a moment of contemplation, I asked Zhao Fan, "How come nothing happened to you?"
Zhao Fan replied, "That time I was with my brothers handling it. But strangely enough, out of four or five people involved in the task, only one ended up dead."
I felt that things were not as simple as they seemed. How could only one person be affected when four or five were involved? And with Boss Huang's daughter also dead, this situation was definitely eerie!
Just then, Gao Ling suddenly said, "Listening to you, I can't help but feel that this child is like a Transmutation Child!"
"What is a Transmutation Child?" Zhao Fan asked.
Gao Ling replied, "It's definitely not something good or easy to deal with." Gao Ling was also a bit clueless, so it was normal for him to be unable to explain clearly.
However, Gao Ling then turned to me and said, "Fei, we should stay out of this. It could get us killed. Let's keep things clear with Boss Huang."
As soon as Gao Ling finished speaking, Zhao Fan exploded, saying, "Damn it! If you’re backing out, it won’t be that easy. Even if I let you off the hook, Huang Kai won’t! To tell you the truth, my brother was probably killed by Boss Huang."
Gao Ling and I exchanged surprised glances at Zhao Fan.
Zhao Fan continued, "Last time things went wrong, Boss Huang's daughter died, and my brother was killed. It was probably a warning for me. If this time goes wrong again, we might end up in the river feeding the fish!"
Gao Ling retorted, "Who are you trying to scare? Boss Huang looks like a person of integrity. Stop slandering others."
Zhao Fan countered, "Do you really think someone can become the richest man without some means? He made it clear to me that if we mess this up, we won't see the sun again."
Looking at Zhao Fan's expression, he didn't seem to be lying.
Gao Ling glanced at me, and I nodded. I chose to believe Zhao Fan. Gao Ling got angry and said, "You bastard! Knowing that people could die and still drag me into this."
Zhao Fan chuckled darkly and said, "You're the only one I know who has some skills; the rest are useless."
Gao Ling replied, "At least you have some insight."
I urged them to stop wasting time; things had come to this point. How could we expect to earn more money without paying a price? It was all my fault for being irrational back then; now it was too late for regrets.
I asked Zhao Fan if he had chosen the next burial site. He confirmed that he had.
I then said, "Let's get started! We have the tools here," but Zhao Fan responded, "Last time we dug a grave during the day and ran into trouble. How about we do it at night this time?" His tone suggested he was seeking our opinion.
Gao Ling and I exchanged glances and agreed.
"Alright, then come over tonight and bring some necessary items," Gao Ling said.
After saying this, we parted ways. Once in the car, Gao Ling remarked, "Fei, that Transmutation Child is really a bit eerie! Usually, children around ten years old are transformed into those things. And do you know why many places don't bury children who die around that age? It's because they're afraid they'll turn into Transmutation Children. Once someone becomes a Transmutation Child, none of their parents' other children will live to see ten; they will all die before reaching that age."
At that moment, Gao Ling made a lot of sense, but his earlier explanation was unclear. He continued, "I just didn't want to explain it to that Zhao Fan bastard. I knew this money wouldn't be easy to earn. Damn it, he’s just trying to take advantage of me."
Now wasn't the time to blame anyone; we needed to get the job done.
Listening to Gao Ling, it was indeed true. In our village, when a child around ten died, no one was buried in a coffin; they were simply disposed of.
This was really eerie!
I said to Gao Ling, "Since you know this so well, there must be a way to deal with it, right?"
Gao Ling shook his head. "No, I've never encountered anything like this before. It's just that these ghostly things can be very dangerous. I'm afraid they might end up killing both of us. Zhao Fan's words can't be trusted; his brother might not have died at the hands of Boss Huang but rather at the hands of a Transmutation Child. He's just too scared to admit it."
Indeed, Gao Ling's words made a lot of sense! I believed that Zhao Fan couldn't be trusted.
Gao Ling and I prepared some Black Dog Blood and rooster blood along with Glutinous Rice and other items known for their protective properties. Before we knew it, night had fallen.
Gao Ling called Zhao Fan. This time he brought two people along with him, making a total of five of us. When we met up, there were no conflicts. Around eight or nine o'clock, we burned some Yuanbao Candles and Joss Paper before starting to dig up the grave.
It didn't actually take long for the five of us to dig up the grave!
The coffin had only been buried for a little over a month, so the soil was loose. The coffin was quickly unearthed, but when I saw it, I was dumbfounded.
Because the coffin was red.
Gao Ling reacted even more strongly than I did and immediately shouted, "Which idiot used a Red Coffin for burial?!"
After Gao Ling finished speaking, Zhao Fan's expression turned sour. He then said, "It was my idea. I thought since the corpse was so eerie, maybe using red would bring some good luck and dispel the Evil Energy."
Gao Ling scolded him, "Fan Ge, what you did is just too foolish! Red is appropriate for joyous occasions but using it for funerals is simply adding insult to injury!"
I looked at the Red Coffin and couldn't help but gasp in shock; this situation was definitely eerie.
The red coffin was now illuminated by the light, appearing exceptionally enchanting.
Gao Ling cursed Zhao Fan a few times, and while Zhao Fan remained silent, his brothers couldn't stand it any longer and started cursing Gao Ling back. Gao Ling, being a clever person, noticed the numbers were against him and called out, "Brother Fan," during his retorts.
Thus, the confrontation didn't escalate too much.
Gao Ling said, "Do you believe that opening the coffin will lead to a corpse scam? It might just bite you all to death!"
After he said this, everyone was left dumbfounded, myself included.
Just then, a hand suddenly rested on my shoulder, causing my heart to sink. I turned to see the ghostly woman in red standing behind me.
I was about to speak when she beat me to it. Her tone seemed somewhat anxious as she quickly said to me, "Chen Lang, come with me quickly..."
