Living Funeral
I was stunned and rushed forward, shouting, "What are you doing?"
But she did not stop her actions at the sound of my voice. Instead, I heard intermittent sobs. The figure before me was a woman. As I got closer, I grabbed her wrist to stop her from digging any further. Her ten fingers were all injured and stained with blood. Her hair was disheveled, her breathing heavy, and tears streamed down her face.
Despite her disheveled appearance, I recognized her immediately; she was Huang's wife.
"Stop digging!" I urged.
But she struggled fiercely, crying out in desperation. I instructed Zhao Fan to quickly call Huang. Holding Huang's wife's hand, I felt an unusual chill emanating from her. She seemed to be mumbling something indistinctly, as if calling for someone—perhaps a brother—but I couldn't be sure.
Zhao Fan quickly followed my instructions.
She continued to struggle intensely when suddenly the woman in red appeared. The moment she showed up, a sense of dread washed over me!
As a Taoist priest, I knew that any woman who came into close contact with me could be in danger. Was this one of those moments? I feared the woman in red might take drastic action, so I swiftly struck Huang's wife with a hand chop to knock her unconscious.
I called out for Gao Ling, who quickly came over to support Huang's wife.
Worried about what the woman in red might do next, she looked at me and asked, "Chen Lang, what's wrong with her?"
I explained, "She's digging a grave."
The woman in red responded with an "Oh," then added, "Chen Lang, this Transmutation Child is really dangerous." I understood the danger well enough; Huang's previous encounter had served as a warning.
I approached the grave and saw the deep hole that Huang's wife had dug. It looked as if she were tunneling underground, frantically searching for something inside.
Staring at the hole that resembled a mouse hole, I was momentarily taken aback.
Zhao Fan came over and said, "Brother, the car and coffin are all ready." I nodded in acknowledgment and thanked him for his hard work.
Zhao Fan then asked me when we would start the work.
I glanced at Boss Huang's boss and replied, "Let's wait until the boss picks up his wife." Zhao Fan had no objections to this suggestion. I had seen many dead people, and I wasn't particularly afraid of them. However, the thought of a corpse being faked did make me a bit uneasy.
After waiting for about half an hour, Boss Huang arrived. Gao Ling said, "You should take your wife back now."
Boss Huang hugged his wife and said, "I'm sorry for causing trouble for everyone. My wife is just anxious to see our child."
Gao Ling replied, "It's no big deal. Boss Huang, you two can leave now. We will be moving the coffin shortly."
Boss Huang thanked us and then left.
I called out to Gao Ling, who quickly ran over and asked, "Fei, did you discover something?"
I said to Gao Ling, "What do you think?"
Gao Ling and Zhao Fan leaned in closer to the dark "Mouse Hole," which was only big enough for one hand to reach in. It gave me a very bad feeling. I looked at Zhao Fan and Gao Ling and then asked, "Do you think there's something wrong?"
Gao Ling asked, "Did Boss Huang's wife dig this?"
I nodded in agreement.
Zhao Fan said, "It should be fine. Last night we dug up the coffin pit and didn't find anything unusual."
However, Gao Ling couldn't help but remind Zhao Fan, "Wasn't that Huang Mao dead?" After those words were spoken, Zhao Fan's expression changed slightly, and he hesitated to move. The atmosphere grew a bit cold. I took a deep breath and glanced at the woman in red; her gaze never left me.
After a moment, he said, "Chen Lang, that woman earlier seemed suspicious too."
I actually felt the same way. That woman must have had issues; otherwise, even if she was anxious about her child, she wouldn't come out at night to dig up a grave with her bare hands! Moreover, her hands were covered in blood. Damn it, unless she was insane, no one would do such a thing.
Also, when I supported her earlier, she seemed to be calling out for her brother...
Although I wasn't sure if I had misheard, there was definitely something strange and suspicious hidden within.
The woman in the red dress paused for a moment and said, "Chen Lang, I think something might happen tonight."
I nodded; I felt the same way. But the arrow was already on the string, and it had to be released! Gao Ling suggested, "Why don't we make sure our preparations are thorough?"
Zhao Fan and I responded in unison, agreeing as we opened the lid of the black coffin. We then sprinkled Black Dog Blood and rooster blood beside the grave, inserted three incense sticks into a Glutinous Rice incense burner, and burned some Joss Paper. After completing these preparations, Zhao Fan suddenly began to chant softly, "May the Ancestor bless us, may the Ancestor protect us disciples from harm."
The woman in red seemed somewhat wary of the Black Dog Blood and kept her distance.
She called out to me, "Chen Lang, you must be careful. This Transmutation Child—if it's not absolutely necessary, do not touch it with your hands."
I acknowledged her warning.
The cold wind blew, and I felt a chill in my heart.
Having done so much, everyone gathered around—there were six of us in total. Four were with Zhao Fan, while only two of us remained. We held shovels and protective items like Black Dog Blood. Digging the pit didn't take long, but when we finally managed to lift the red coffin, I was taken aback.
That Mouse Hole was indeed suspicious! Damn it, it had actually broken open the coffin! At that moment, a tuft of hair emerged from inside.
I couldn't help but gasp in shock. My breathing quickened as anxiety surged within me. I felt extremely uneasy; however, having come this far, retreating now would be difficult. I took a deep breath and said, "Let's open the coffin!"
I was the first to act, swiftly removing the coffin nails.
Then Gao Ling joined in. Zhao Fan didn't dare to do it himself and had one of his disciples help instead. After about seven or eight minutes, all the nails were removed. I steadied myself against the coffin lid and instructed Gao Ling to do it with me; there shouldn't be anyone else on the opposite side. I told Gao Ling to listen to me: "On the count of three, we open it."
Gao Ling replied confidently, "No problem."
After counting to three, I immediately flipped the coffin lid onto the ground and quickly retreated with Gao Ling; Zhao Fan and his group did the same.
At that moment, the air seemed thick with tension as time ticked by slowly. After about five minutes without any movement, I stepped forward. The woman in red closely followed me; she called out my name—Chen Lang—and her face showed signs of anxiety.
I approached the coffin and took a quick glance inside. The moment I did, my heart jumped into my throat.
This corpse was not right! It had two heads!
Damn it, I gasped in shock, nearly screaming out loud. As the flashlight beam illuminated the scene, I saw another head nestled between its legs. It was truly terrifying! My scalp tingled, a sensation that spread from my head to my toes.
Zhao Fan nervously asked me, "What’s going on?"
I swallowed hard and replied, "Holy crap, this corpse has two heads!"
"What?" Zhao Fan questioned.
"Damn it, this corpse has two heads!" I reiterated.
Gao Ling leaned closer to me and said, "This Transmutation Child is really eerie! Be careful!"
I acknowledged her warning, but thankfully, the corpse hadn’t risen. The ghost in red said to me, "Chen Lang, the other head of this corpse must belong to a child he killed."
I nodded and waited for a while; when the corpse remained still, my courage grew a bit. I said, "Let’s not touch the body yet. Drag the coffin over there."
Zhao Fan agreed with my suggestion. Once the coffin was moved next to the vehicle, we would have less time in contact with the body. It took about half an hour to drag the coffin to the side of the car. Gao Ling said, "Fan Ge, the next steps are up to you guys."
Zhao Fan wasn’t foolish; he got angry and exclaimed, "Gao Ling, do you think I'm an idiot? I got burned last time; now you want me to take this risk again? Damn it, are you trying to get me killed?"
Gao Ling replied, "If you don’t do it, we’ll just part ways and go back home."
The two quickly started arguing again. I shouted at them to stop bickering and finish up so we could all go home.
After I yelled, Gao Ling and Zhao Fan fell silent. I suggested, "How about this: I'll handle it if one of you steps up from your side."
Zhao Fan glanced at the three people behind him, but they instinctively took a step back. Zhao Fan cursed under his breath, "Damn it, they’re all cowards. I’ll do it myself."
At that moment, my palms were sweating. The hair of the Transmutation Child inside the coffin was longer than my own height, and his fingernails were as long as his fingers, especially those two heads.
It was truly unsettling! One head on top, another below. Zhao Fan took a glance and immediately exclaimed, "Isn't that the head of Boss Huang's daughter?"
Hearing Zhao Fan's words made me gasp involuntarily. I suppressed my fear and said, "Enough talk! Let's move quickly before it turns into a corpse!" I lifted the upper part while Zhao Fan handled the lower part. The girl's head had already grown onto the Transmutation Child's legs.
It was as if that head had existed since birth; this Transmutation Child was indeed eerie!
Gao Ling illuminated the scene for me and then said, "Heart, fly!"
The ghost in red called out to me, "Chen Lang," which made my heart race. I responded, and Zhao Fan and I slowly lifted the Transmutation Child, preparing to carry it to the truck. It was one of those tow trucks, and Zhao Fan looked utterly cowardly; of course, I wasn't much better off.
Just then, I suddenly heard a girl's voice coming from between the Transmutation Child's legs. She sweetly said, "Brother, I'm scared."
