Living Funeral
Through the light, I looked at his back and noticed he seemed to be trembling slightly.
I said to Zhao Fan, "Why is he turning his back on us? After all, this is Zhao Fan's person. If we need something, it should be Zhao Fan who takes care of it." Zhao Fan glanced at the man's back and called out, "Hey, Hometown, are you okay? We're getting ready to leave."
As soon as those words were spoken, everyone's gaze fell upon that man.
These villagers were familiar with each other, so it didn't take long for someone to shout, "Lao Liu, what's wrong with you? Boss is calling for you." One villager placed a hand on the man's shoulder and forcefully turned him around. However, once the man was turned, the villager who had acted was nearly scared out of his wits. After a startled gasp, he shouted, "There's a ghost!"
At that moment, we all focused our attention and saw that the villager who turned around had transformed into a cat face. I couldn't help but gasp in shock.
We all froze for a few seconds, and then he let out a sharp cat-like scream, causing everyone to retreat in fear.
Gao Ling cursed loudly, "What the hell is this?"
Gao Ling asked me what was going on. I wanted to know too; this person actually had a cat face.
I took another look at that cat face. It resembled the Yin Cat! It still had some human facial features.
Oh no, could it be possessed by the Yin Cat?
At that moment, everyone was holding tools for retrieving bodies from the river. After overcoming their initial fear, seeing such a creature made them eager to strike.
But then the Cat Person glanced around and suddenly lunged at me. I was startled; my hair stood on end as I dodged to the side.
The Cat Person let out a strange cry, and behind it, a bold villager swung a wooden stick at the Cat Person's back. However, the Cat Person showed no reaction and didn't even make a sound of pain.
The villager quickly swung again, but in the next second, the Cat Person pounced on him and knocked him to the ground.
I sensed that something was wrong and quickly rushed forward.
But I was a step too late; the villager pinned to the ground soon cried out in pain, blood spilling forth. I stepped up and kicked Cat Person aside. Cat Person stumbled to the side, and I pulled out a talisman to stick on him, but he dodged it just in time.
He let out a "meow," moving with incredible agility. The villager's cries echoed through the grass hut, serving as a warning: anyone who dared to intervene would meet the same fate.
Gao Ling approached me, holding a bowl of rooster blood. "Fei, let's flank him from both sides," she said. I never expected the villager to end up like this.
It seemed the Taoist was right; that Yin Cat was indeed problematic. Damn it, just thinking about it sent shivers down my spine! If I had killed Yin Cat, then it could very well be me who turned into Cat Person now.
I nodded at Gao Ling, while Zhao Fan instructed the other villagers to carry away the injured one.
In that grass hut, only the three of us remained.
The Cat Person emitted a meowing sound. It was truly bizarre; he had a human body but a cat's face, which sent chills down my spine.
Gao Ling gave me a knowing glance. Understanding her signal, she splashed the rooster blood onto Cat Person.
This time, Cat Person couldn't evade it, and his sharp cries grew louder.
I hurried forward, ready to apply the talisman, but just as I was about to press it onto Cat Person, the Taoist called out to me.
"Let him go," he urged, his voice tinged with urgency.
I hesitated as I glanced at the Taoist. This Cat Person was truly eerie! If we let him go, he would surely harm others!
The Taoist insisted, "Chen Fei, trust me."
I swallowed hard, feeling a knot of tension in my stomach, but in the end, I chose to heed the Taoist's words.
At that moment, the Cat Person began to struggle and pushed me to the ground.
Gao Ling shouted, "Fei, what are you doing? Move faster!" I scrambled back to my feet, and the Cat Person was already darting out of the grass hut.
Zhao Fan had intended to use the prepared rope to catch the Cat Person, but he missed entirely as it bolted outside.
The Taoist urged me, "You need to chase after it!"
I thought to myself, what does this Taoist mean? First, he tells me to let the Cat Person go, and now he wants me to chase it down. He added, "This matter cannot be left unresolved. If you don't listen to me and let this Yin Cat die..."
My heart raced, anxiety building within me.
I didn't want to kill this Yin Cat! Besides, it wasn't my hand that had done the deed; but now it was too late for regrets.
Since the Taoist told me to chase it, I would do just that. Gao Ling was still scolding me, saying, "Fei, were you in a daze just now?"
I spat in frustration, "Stop talking nonsense and hurry up!"
Damn it, this Yin Cat was truly formidable! It had feasted on corpses in the river and even managed to possess a living person at the moment of death and turn them into a Cat Person. It was terrifying beyond belief.
Zhao Fan and I quickly caught up with each other. The villagers were gathered outside the grass hut, all huddled together. I asked them where that ghostly creature had gone.
The villagers replied that it had headed downstream.
We were dressed in our night gear for retrieving bodies from the river, with miner's lamps strapped to our heads. We turned on our lamps and followed the current downstream.
Gao Ling said, "Damn it, how did a Cat Person show up?"
I replied, "You don't know? That Yin Cat can't be killed; now we've got a problem!"
Gao Ling remarked, "So it really is that Yin Cat causing trouble! Zhao Fan said, "It seems this incident is indeed related to the Cat Demon."
At that moment, it was around eight in the evening. After chasing for a while, I caught sight of a figure in the moonlight and quickly shouted, "It's right ahead!"
A sharp cat's cry soon reached our ears. Damn it, could that Yin Cat really have become sentient?
Unsure of the Taoist's intentions, I asked what we would do once we caught up to it.
The Taoist replied, "Of course we'll eliminate it on the spot!" I questioned why he hadn't acted earlier. The Taoist teased me, saying, "You'll find out soon enough."
I didn't press further and continued the chase as the distance between us closed.
Gao Ling cursed, "Damn it! Let's see where this Cat Demon runs to now!" Zhao Fan asked, "Brother Fei, are you confident?"
I glanced at the Taoist and assured him, "I am confident."
Hearing this, Zhao Fan felt reassured and said, "Then let's keep pursuing; leaving this thing alive is a disaster waiting to happen."
Just as we were about to catch up, the Cat Person suddenly dove into the water with a swift motion. With a loud splash, the surface erupted.
We looked towards the river; the current was swift and roared in our ears. The Cat Person quickly vanished from sight.
Our breaths became uneven. Gao Ling asked, "What do we do now?"
"Zhao Fan said, there is our boat nearby, let's get on board."
We were originally here to retrieve a body, and now we could search for the corpse while also catching the Cat Person.
I asked the Taoist if it was safe to go into the water. He replied that it was no problem; we couldn't let the Yin Cat escape. If the Yin Cat got away, trouble would come knocking.
I nodded. I had come to trust the Taoist completely.
We quickly boarded the boat and arrived at the river where the Cat Person had vanished. Gao Ling suddenly spoke up, "The Yin Qi here is really heavy!"
I glanced at the river surface and then looked behind me. After observing, my expression changed; I couldn't tell if I had misjudged something.
The boat ran on diesel, so it was particularly noisy at that moment, and with the turbulent water, we had to raise our voices to communicate.
I asked Zhao Fan, "Don't you think the color of the water upstream and downstream looks different?"
The water at the front of the boat was black, while the water behind us was murky. We were still a bit away from that patch of black water, but since the boat was moving downstream, we were picking up speed quickly.
Just as we were about to reach it, I suddenly saw a cluster of heads emerging from the dark water…
