Living Funeral
It might not hold much longer like this.
Zhang Xun approached me and said, "Write the five characters of Grand General's Edict." I quickly followed Zhang Xun's instructions and wrote those five characters on the wooden board. After I finished writing, there was no further movement inside.
I slowly relaxed my grip and exhaled a breath of stale air. I thought to myself, the Taoist must rely on himself from here on out; I've done all I can.
I wiped the beads of cold sweat from my forehead; it had indeed been a heart-pounding moment.
Zhao Fan still hadn't opened the door and told me that it seemed to be blocked by something outside. Damn it, is it really that hard to open a door? I walked over to Zhao Fan and said, "Step aside."
I stepped forward and kicked the door, but there was no response. Seeing that my kick had no effect, Gao Ling said, "I really don't believe in evil." He stepped up and kicked as well, but it was useless. After my kick, I could feel something solid blocking the door from the outside.
I paused for a moment and said, "Let's use fire; it's a wooden door, so burning it should work." After I spoke, Gao Ling took action, using a lighter to ignite the wooden door, having first burned a piece of clothing to start the fire.
The flames quickly shot up high, and at the same time, thick smoke filled the room, causing us to cough incessantly.
Gao Ling cursed, "Damn it, this is really choking me to death."
I asked, "Does anyone have water?" After I spoke, I received only negative responses; no one had brought any water. The room was sealed with no windows, and given its small size, it quickly filled with smoke.
Tears streamed from my eyes due to the smoke.
The fire on the door was fierce now, crackling loudly. Damn it, at this rate, if the door isn't burned down soon, we might die in here.
At that critical moment, a piece of wood inside was suddenly flung away.
Gao Qing cursed at me, saying, "Chen Fei, what kind of mess are you causing?"
I cursed, "Damn it," and without thinking further, I stepped back a bit, gathered my strength, and kicked the door with all my might. The impact sent me tumbling backward, crashing into a corpse that had just crawled up.
My foot caught fire, and I quickly stomped it out. I scrambled to my feet; there was no time to waste. If we waited any longer, people would die. The wooden boards couldn't hold down the corpses below, and the smoke was thickening. At this rate, we would be in serious trouble.
I charged forward again and kicked the door a second time. This time, I heard the sound of tearing wood—it was about to give way! I shouted.
Sparks flew everywhere as I kicked, and Gao Ling and Zhao Fan quickly followed my lead. Finally, it was Zhang Xun who managed to kick it open. Once the door swung wide, we rushed outside, nearly suffocating from the smoke.
We emerged with great difficulty, coughing violently as we gulped down fresh air.
"We almost died in there," Gao Ling said.
"Yeah! We really did come close," Zhao Fan added.
Zhang Xun, however, didn't react like us. Instead, he quickly sat down cross-legged and began chanting incantations. He pulled out a talisman and fixed it at the entrance of the room with incense, declaring, "Yin and Yang severed, mutually unrelated."
To our astonishment, the corpses inside did not follow us out; they remained trapped within.
Seeing this strange scene unfold, Zhao Fan exclaimed, "Bro, you're amazing! Why didn't you use that trick earlier?"
Gao Qing replied, "Even if I had used it then, it wouldn't have worked. Inside there was an Eight Yin Diagram; the Yin energy was too heavy. Later on, when the balance of Yin and Yang was disrupted temporarily, it couldn't be severed from within."
Gao Qing spoke with authority, but his gaze toward me was unfriendly. I couldn't help it; in that situation earlier, I had to act as I did. Although the corpse in that coffin was important to Gao Ling, she hadn't been helpful before.
The Taoist had asked for my assistance earlier, so I chose to help him.
I turned my gaze away as Gao Qing snorted coldly. The corpses inside quickly retreated back into the room. However, the fire did not cease; a gust of wind blew in from who knows where and ignited the entire house.
The corpses were also set ablaze.
Zhang Xun stood up as well, but he only stared at the house engulfed in flames without turning away.
Gao Ling said, "I don't know which bastard blocked the door; isn't this going to get us killed?"
At that moment, a thick tree trunk, about the size of a large bowl, appeared on the ground.
I remained silent for a moment and then said, "I know who it is." Gao Ling asked, "Who?"
I replied, "It's Cui Fang."
"Cui Fang?" Gao Ling asked in confusion. Zhao Fan looked at me as well, and even Gao Qing had a puzzled expression. I met their curious gazes and explained, "Because Cui Fang told me there was a house like this here."
Thinking back on Cui Fang now felt eerie. But why did she lead me here?
Was it just to take our lives? And what exactly is Cui Fang—alive or dead? The memory of her crazily climbing the tree still sent shivers down my spine.
By this time, we had regained our composure. Gao Ling walked over and handed me a cigarette. I said to him, "Haven't you had enough inside?" After I said this, Gao Ling was instantly speechless.
I turned to glance at the flames behind me, wondering how the Taoist was doing. Although it was on fire here, it shouldn't reach below.
I sighed, feeling as if everything that had just happened was like a dream. Just then, my phone rang again. I pulled out my phone and saw it was Fatty Zhang calling. I didn't want to answer his call.
But after thinking for a moment, I pressed the answer button.
Fatty Zhang immediately said to me, "Chen Fei, don't hang up on me."
"Damn it," I muttered. That damn Fatty Zhang had been ignoring my calls, and now that I didn't want to hang up, I said to him, "What do you want? Don't waste my time."
Fatty Zhang replied, "Chen Fei, listen to me, something happened at Mountain Lodge."
Again with this phrase. I really didn't understand what it meant, so I asked, "What is Mountain Lodge? Can you say it in a way I can understand?"
At that moment, Fatty Zhang sighed on the other end of the line and said, "Fei, this is really important. If you don't believe me, just tell Zhang Xun; just saying 'Mountain Lodge' will be enough."
Skeptically, I called out to Zhang Xun, who turned to look at me.
I said, "Someone at Mountain Lodge is in trouble."
Zhang Xun, who had been squatting down, immediately stood up and walked toward me. "Chen Fei, what is it?"
I was the one connected to Mountain Lodge.
Something happened at Mountain Lodge? Zhang Xun's demeanor suddenly shifted to one of agitation; his emotions rarely fluctuated. I nodded, and on the phone, Fatty Zhang asked, "Do you believe me now?"
I replied, "What is Mountain Lodge?"
Fatty Zhang suddenly said, "You hung up on me earlier; now I'm going to hang up on you."
Damn it! This Fatty Zhang—hello? Hello...? Damn it! He hung up before I could finish my sentence. When I tried calling back, he outright refused to answer. How did Fatty Zhang know that Zhang Xun was with me? Was he really keeping tabs on us?
This Fatty Zhang was truly mysterious.
At that moment, Zhang Xun's expression shifted between uncertainty and concern. "Chen Fei, we can't wait any longer."
I looked at Zhang Xun and asked, "Is it because of Mountain Lodge?"
Zhang Xun nodded and asked me, "What happened?"
I relayed what Fat Zhang had said, mentioning that there were ghosts at Mountain Lodge. However, I was curious; after all, who among us hadn't seen a ghost? There was no need to be so alarmed! Yet, Zhang Xun's reaction seemed a bit excessive.
Were there really ghosts at Mountain Lodge? Zhang Xun confirmed that he had been alive since 198, so he must have known Fat Zhang.
So I said, "It's Fat Zhang's words."
Zhang Xun replied, "Then it must be true." He continued, "Chen Fei, there cannot be ghosts at Mountain Lodge."
Suddenly, I felt that this "ghost" might not refer to the spirits of the deceased but something else entirely—perhaps an insider or something similar.
Zhang Xun urged me to leave immediately. I called Gao Ling and the others to leave with me. I still didn't understand what kind of ghost Mountain Lodge was referring to, but judging by Zhang Xun's expression, it was clearly important.
We moved forward, but after walking just a hundred steps or so, a red sedan chair suddenly appeared not far ahead of us, followed by a long procession.
Gao Qing's expression changed as he said, "Oh no, it looks like we've encountered a Ghost Marriage."
