Living Funeral
After the voice fell, I looked up and saw Zhang, the chubby guy, panting as he ran up. He cursed, "Do you think you have the right to make us move the coffin?" His voice was full of energy.
I felt Wuluo's Father gripping my hand tightly.
Seeing Zhang and the others arrive gave me some confidence. I shouted, "Why did it take you so long to get here?"
As soon as I finished speaking, Zhang slowed his pace and said to me, "What are you afraid of? He's just a half-dead man. Chen Fei can take care of him."
I cursed inwardly, thinking, what the hell! As long as the person in the coffin doesn't come after me, that's a good thing.
At that moment, Zhang Xun was staring at me without saying a word, while Wuluo's Father also looked at me. Zhang yelled at me, "Hey Chen Fei, hurry up! Jiang Changsheng is still waiting for us." After he said this, my mind went into a frenzy! What should I do? If I could kill Wuluo's Father, I wouldn't be in such a desperate situation.
Zhang then said, "The dead person in the coffin, Chen Fei, not killing you now is giving you a chance. If you don't let go of your hand soon, don't blame Chen Fei for not letting you go. Neither Jiang Changsheng nor Zhang Xun will spare you. Think carefully."
Upon hearing this, Wuluo's Father slowly released my hand. I quickly pulled my hand away and took a few steps back.
Zhang wiped the cold sweat from his forehead.
Wuluo's Father asked, "So where is Jiang Changsheng now?" He was still trying to crawl out of the coffin.
Zhang angrily cursed, "Damn it! How dare you stir things up on sacred ground? You must be looking to die again." With that, he rushed forward and shouted, flipping the coffin over and sending it tumbling off the cliff.
After Zhang flipped the coffin over, a scream echoed from below the cliff.
I was stunned for a moment, frozen for several seconds. Zhang turned to me and said, "Chen Fei, what are you still standing there for?"
I snapped back to reality and said, "Right, let's hurry down the mountain."
Zhang Fatty replied, "What do you mean down? We need to go up quickly! Haven't you noticed that the number of ghosts at the Mountain Lodge is increasing? If this continues, we won't be able to control the situation."
"Are there only ghosts inside? Not a single living person?"
Zhang Fatty said, "Of course! Inside, it's either ghosts or corpses."
I felt a wave of anxiety wash over me. I turned to Zhang Xun and asked if we should go up. Zhang Xun quickly confirmed my question, saying we should go up. Since Zhang Xun was on board, I didn't hesitate any longer.
We began our ascent. With both of them by my side, I felt much more secure. On the way up, I asked, "Where did you two go before this?"
Zhang Fatty replied, "We were careless and got set up."
Zhang Xun added, "When we woke up, we were already at the foot of the mountain."
I nodded but wondered why I wasn't at the foot of the mountain myself. How did I end up inside? My mind was filled with questions; it felt like everything that had happened in the past few days had reached an eerie level beyond comprehension.
Zhang Xun simply remarked, "You're different from us."
Zhang Fatty said, "If you had died in there, it would have been a big problem. But looking at you now, it seems like you almost died too."
"Damn it," I cursed. "Fatty Zhang, do you still have time for jokes right now?"
Zhang Fatty replied, "I'm not joking. It seems like some people are already getting restless. Who am I? Zhang Fatty shook his head. I asked, "Are you still keeping secrets at a time like this?"
Zhang Fatty insisted, "I'm really not keeping secrets; I just don't know."
When we reached the top of the mountain, Zhang Xun said, "Let's get started."
Zhang Pangzi nodded. At that moment, the gates of West San Village were tightly shut. As everyone rushed out, Zhang Pangzi took out a Yellow Talisman, lit it, and threw it into West San Village.
"You've gone too far; you can't blame me for this," Zhang Pangzi declared. Not long after he spoke, the entire courtyard suddenly burst into flames.
Zhang Xun watched the fire intently, his expression calm and unperturbed. The courtyard was soon engulfed in flames, turning everything a bright red.
I thought to myself, really? It's already burning?
Zhang Pangzi replied, "What else did you expect? This place should have burned long ago. If we don't burn it down, these bastards will always think they can bully us."
I meant to say that it seemed impossible for just a few pieces of yellow paper to ignite this place, especially considering how casually Zhang Pangzi threw the talismans. Zhang Xun said, "Chen Fei, the reason this place can be easily burned is that none of it is real."
I suddenly asked, "Will the people inside be burned to death?"
Zhang Pangzi answered, "There’s no one inside; it's all dead bodies and ghosts. So there’s no question of burning someone alive or not."
I said, "But someone saved me inside before; are they going to be burned too?"
Zhang Xun reassured me, "That was just an illusion; they're fine."
I responded with an "oh," unsure of what to think as I watched the raging fire. Zhang Pangzi sighed and said, "I didn't want to burn it down; I wanted to go in and talk things over with them. But they refused our goodwill and forced our hand."
The fire raged for nearly an hour before finally consuming everything. At that moment, the Death Bell rang again, striking ten times in succession. I saw a dead person ringing it; after finishing, they simply walked away.
This time I got a good look at the deceased. After ringing the Death Bell, they turned to me with a smile before slowly fading away.
I watched the corpse until it disappeared, and neither Zhang Xun nor the chubby Zhang seemed to react particularly.
The fire slowly extinguished, but at that moment, I noticed that the courtyard on the left was still intact. I exclaimed in surprise, "That place!"
Zhang Xun replied, "That is the real Mountain Lodge, also known as Yang Zhuang, but we can't go in there now."
I asked, "Why not?"
Chubby Zhang said, "Why does it always have to be about reasons? Some things just can't be done without explanation."
I told Chubby Zhang that he had a point, but there must be a reason we can't enter here. He looked at me in surprise and then said, "You are right about that."
Chubby Zhang chuckled a few times and said, "But I can't tell you now. It's enough that the ghost of the Mountain Lodge has been driven away. Let's go."
I told Chubby Zhang that if he didn't tell me, I wouldn't go in by myself.
He replied, "You won't."
Zhang Xun let out a sigh; nothing happened. I pretended to walk toward the untouched Mountain Lodge, and they didn't stop me. However, I certainly wouldn't go inside. Damn it, such a terrifying and bizarre place—if something else happened inside the Mountain Lodge, I couldn't handle it.
Zhang Xun said, "Let's head down."
During our descent, I asked Chubby Zhang, "Were your earlier words just to scare Wuluo's Father—the dead person in the coffin?"
Chubby Zhang replied that Jiang Changsheng was deceiving him and scaring him as well. But if he dared to take action against you, it would be like digging into the earth beneath a powerful figure; pushing him off the cliff would be too lenient.
After we left the mountain, we walked outside until dawn, and only then did we encounter a car on the road. We flagged it down, paid the fare, and got in. I had taken quite a loss this time.
I asked Zhang Fatty some questions, but he always dodged my inquiries without giving me a clear answer.
Reluctantly, I turned to ask about Zhang Xun and Coffin Street. Zhang Xun told me that the reason I could come out of Coffin Street was because of a coffin.
"A coffin?" I was somewhat surprised. Was it the coffin from Hundred Demons Carrying the Coffin? Zhang Xun nodded, saying that the coffin was very eerie, and in the end, someone appeared and burned the coffin, allowing me to come out with him.
"Who was it?"
Zhang Fatty also seemed eager for Zhang Xun's answer. Zhang Xun sighed and said, "Jiang Changsheng."
Zhang Fatty exclaimed excitedly, "Has he started to show himself? Where did he come out from?"
The driver probably didn't understand what we were talking about and said, "What kind of movie are you watching that’s so creepy?"
I replied, "We're not watching a movie; it's a book titled Living Funeral. You can check it out later." The driver chuckled and said, "Sure."
At that moment, Zhang Xun's expression turned grim as he said, "He has come out."
"But it's not time yet!" Zhang Fatty protested.
