Living Funeral
At that moment, I saw Axiang standing by the bed, her face filled with resentment.
When Axiang noticed me, she looked quite surprised, while I was left dumbfounded. It was obvious that Axiang was a ghost; otherwise, how could Gao Ling and Wu the Fatty not react at all? Even Zhang Xun seemed oblivious to her presence.
Axiang was still wearing that bridesmaid dress, quietly standing by the bed. Although she looked furious, it seemed she couldn't approach the bride.
I felt a surge of curiosity as I noticed several pieces of yellow paper stuck to the bed. No wonder things were like this.
If Axiang was indeed dead, then the Axiang from before must have been an impersonator. Damn it, this was like a game of "Infernal Affairs," and my IQ wasn't high enough for this. If it weren't for my strong will to live, I might have died several times over by now.
I looked at Axiang, but she wasn’t really here.
At that moment, Wu the Fatty's wife had turned pale, looking extremely unwell, mumbling something incomprehensible.
Wu the Fatty turned to Gao Ling and asked for her help. I immediately interjected to Gao Ling, “This is not something we can assist with.”
Wu the Fatty stared at me and said, “What do you mean?”
I straightforwardly repeated, “We can’t help with this, Wu the Fatty. Don’t think I’m unaware of your affair with the bridesmaid.” At this point, his wife seemed dazed and probably couldn’t comprehend what I was saying.
Wu the Fatty’s face flushed red as he replied, “What affair? I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”
Damn it, this guy still wouldn’t admit it. I didn’t press further. I turned to Gao Ling and said we should head back; what I wanted to know had already been confirmed.
Gao Ling asked, “So soon?”
I let out a sound, and Zhang Xun glanced around the room without saying a word. I walked out, and naturally, Zhang Xun followed me as I headed outside.
Wu the Fatty panicked and said, "Gao Ling, don't go!"
Gao Ling replied, "Wu the Fatty, it's not that I don't want to help you. Here, my words don't count; his do. We're from the same company, and he's the boss." With that, Gao Ling shifted the responsibility onto me. I didn't care; offending Wu the Fatty didn't weigh on my conscience at all.
I continued walking outside, but Wu the Fatty shamelessly knelt down in front of me, pleading for my help.
I asked Wu the Fatty, "Where is her grave?"
Wu the Fatty hesitated, acting as if he didn't know on purpose.
We decided to leave right then. With no other choice, Wu the Fatty said, "I'll take you to see it." It was around seven in the evening when we set off with flashlights. The rural mountain roads were difficult to navigate, so it took us over an hour to arrive.
As we got closer, I caught a whiff of a foul odor, and an uneasy feeling crept over me. Wu the Fatty said, "This time I really feel sorry for Axiang!"
At that moment, I guessed Wu the Fatty was starting to feel scared. This scoundrel had done something terrible and was surely afraid of ghosts knocking at his door.
When we finally approached, I saw a decaying corpse—female in appearance. The body was covered in insects; as I shone my flashlight over it, mosquitoes and other bugs flew around chaotically. It was nauseating; I felt like throwing up.
"Damn it," I said. "This can't be Axiang's body, can it?"
Wu the Fatty nodded slightly.
I remarked how unbelievable it was that they could commit such a heartless act; it was simply insane and utterly reprehensible.
Zhang Xun's expression changed as well. Gao Ling added, "No wonder others don't bother you; you've desecrated someone’s life and now left their body out here in the wild. Wu the Fatty, you truly have a black heart."
"Wu the Fatty," I said, "this isn't my doing; it's the others in the village."
I was also curious why Axiang didn't take action against Wu the Fatty. Someone like him wouldn't evoke any pity from me, and it seemed Wu the Fatty had taken to heart the saying that those who are pitiful must have their faults.
I covered my mouth and nose, feeling utterly lost. Finally, I said to Wu the Fatty, "Find a coffin to put the body in, then perform a ritual and bury it properly."
Wu the Fatty looked troubled. "Isn't that a bit inappropriate? The others in the village will laugh at us if they find out."
"Dammit, you bastard! After doing something so despicable, you still have the nerve to say that?" I was genuinely angry now.
Wu the Fatty shot back at me, "What did you just say? Say it again if you dare."
I replied, "I could say it ten times and it would still be the same."
Wu the Fatty looked like he wanted to fight, but I warned him, "If you dare to lay a hand on me, the three of us will bury you alive."
Out here in this desolate area, no one would come by at this hour. After I said that, Wu the Fatty backed down. I told him, "If you don't do as I say, just wait for your death."
"Fine," Wu the Fatty conceded. "I'll do what you say."
I instructed Wu the Fatty to carry the body back. At first, he was reluctant, but eventually had no choice but to hoist it up. He then bought a coffin in the village and placed Axiang's body inside.
The coffin seller laughed at Wu the Fatty for going through all this trouble.
Wu the Fatty could only smile awkwardly in response. With Axiang's body secured in the coffin, I asked Zhang Xun, "Is this enough?"
Zhang Xun shook his head. "No, we need to wait for the seventh day. The spirit returns on the seventh day; three days have already passed, so we need to wait three more."
"Alright then," I said. "We'll wait for three more days."
"Zhang Xun said, 'We have provided her with the best food and drink.'
Wu the Fatty hurriedly replied, 'Of course, of course.' I went to Wu the Fatty's room, but Axiang was already gone.
Wu the Fatty's wife looked just as she always did. After we finished giving our instructions, we left. Wu the Fatty asked us, 'How is my wife doing?'
Zhang Xun replied, 'We've provided Axiang with good food and drink; your wife should be fine.' With that, we departed.
On the way back to the city, I spoke up, 'Axiang is really dead. It seems that night it was indeed the Old Witch impersonating Axiang!' I covered my face with my hands and rubbed it hard; a slight pain helped keep me alert.
However, before we even reached the city, Wu the Fatty's phone rang.
Gao Ling answered a call and said, 'This is bad; someone has died.'
'No way, someone died so quickly?' I was somewhat surprised. Zhang Xun remarked, 'It's better if one or two people die; after all, they ruined someone else's girl and should pay some price.'
At that moment, I felt Zhang Xun's words made a lot of sense.
Despite this, Gao Ling still turned the car around. When we arrived at Wu the Fatty's house, I saw a body hanging—completely naked.
It had been barely an hour since we left.
The deceased was none other than Wu the Fatty's wife. I knew in my heart that this must have been Axiang's doing, but I remained silent.
Wu the Fatty cried out like a big man in despair. 'When I went downstairs, my wife was fine. But when I came back up, she was hanging there—naked from the beam.'
Wu the Fatty didn't even have the courage to take her down."
Otherwise, which man would allow his wife to be seen naked by other men? Gao Ling and I carefully laid the body down and covered it with a blanket. I turned to Wu the Fatty and said, "Prepare for the funeral."
Honestly, I still thought that this was what his wife deserved.
Although what Axiang and Wu the Fatty did was also shameful, Wu the Fatty's wife's method of revenge was simply too ruthless.
Gao Ling said, "May you find peace in your sorrow."
Suddenly, Wu the Fatty went wild, shouting, "I asked you to save my wife, and now you've killed her!"
Gao Ling replied that it wasn't our fault. Wu the Fatty continued to cry, quickly attracting the attention of others in the village. It was shocking that the newlywed bride had died so soon.
Wu the Fatty insisted that Axiang was responsible for his wife's death and declared that he would burn the coffin. He ran outside in a frenzy and poured oil on it. I intended to stop him, but was blocked by the villagers.
"A ghost can't just run amok here; if she causes trouble in our village, we need to show her who's boss."
"Right! Even in death, she's not at peace and still causing trouble. Let's make sure her soul is scattered."
Just as he finished speaking, Wu the Fatty suddenly ignited a torch and set fire to that villager.
