Living Funeral
The red paper emitted a faint glow, and then it seemed as if some invisible chains appeared in the air, binding Jiang Changsheng within them.
The Old Witch sneered, "Jiang Changsheng, let's settle both new and old scores this time." As she spoke, the chains moved like tentacles toward Jiang Changsheng's neck, attempting to strangle him. Strangely, Jiang Changsheng did not move at all. He simply allowed her to tighten her grip.
My consciousness grew increasingly weak as I watched the scene unfold before me. I thought to myself, is Jiang Changsheng really that foolish? He didn’t even try to resist. Damn it, the Old Witch's chilling laughter echoed in my ears, sending shivers down my spine.
At that moment, I had no idea how I looked. I slowly lifted my head but lacked the strength to do so; I just lay limply on the ground. Not long after, I heard a scream, but I didn’t have the energy to look.
My awareness faded further until I finally lost consciousness.
In a daze, it felt like I was dreaming again. In my dream, I saw Jiang Changsheng walking toward me, holding something in his hand. He slowly crouched down and said to me, "Aged, wake up."
After he spoke, he walked away. In the direction he left, I saw a beam of light shining down; the light was somewhat blinding, as if the sun had just risen.
I began to open my eyes and saw the sun rising at the end of the road. Everything looked so peaceful, with pieces of red paper scattered on the ground. At this moment, the sun had not fully risen yet.
I felt a bit of pain in my head. After standing up from the ground, my body swayed unsteadily as if I might fall over. Gao Ling lay behind me, as did Zhang Xun.
The broken car was still parked by the roadside; there was no one else on this road. As I stood up, memories of what happened last night flooded back—Old Witch and Jiang Changsheng. Thinking of this, I quickly reached back to check myself.
Looking at my hands, I remembered that I had turned into an old man at that time; however, now they looked like they used to be. I finally breathed a sigh of relief and walked over to wake Gao Ling and Zhang Xun.
Fortunately, both of them had only fainted. When they woke up, Zhang Xun asked me, "Chen Fei, are you okay?"
I shook my head; I was fine.
Gao Ling sat up and exclaimed, "Where are those ghosts? Damn it, why is there so much red paper on the ground?"
Zhang Xun looked at me with confusion and asked, "What happened afterward?"
I didn’t hide anything from Zhang Xun and directly replied, "Jiang Changsheng appeared."
Zhang Xun's expression changed immediately; he looked somewhat shocked. He murmured something under his breath but didn’t seem to understand it himself. Afterward, Zhang Xun asked me, "Did he say anything to you?"
I shook my head; he only told me that my name was Aged.
Zhang Xun was momentarily at a loss for words and said, "You are called Aged, but right now you are Chen Fei."
I didn't dwell too much on this topic with Zhang Xun. What did it matter if I was Aged or Chen Fei? They were just codenames.
Gao Ling asked, "Is the Old Witch dead?"
I replied that she should be dead; otherwise, we wouldn't have survived. After experiencing what happened last night, I began to believe in certain things, like the events of 198.
Gao Ling cursed, "Damn it, we have to fix the car this early in the morning."
A gust of morning wind blew, waking me up considerably. Zhang Xun and I fell into silence; perhaps he was lost in his own thoughts.
I pulled out my phone to check the time but noticed several missed calls from Fu Yan. The calls had come shortly after I left Wu the Fatty's village. At that time, I might have already fallen victim to the Old Witch's schemes.
I dialed back one of the missed calls.
It was seven in the morning when Fu Yan quickly answered. "Where were you last night? Are you okay?" he asked.
I replied, "I'm fine now. We escaped from the village last night." Fu Yan responded, "That's good."
I then asked Fu Yan about what had happened in the village.
Fu Yan said, "There was an arson and murder case. The murderer committed suicide after the crime, and that's how the case ended."
I was stunned for a few seconds. It was probably for the best that the case ended this way; Wu the Fatty and his wife got what they deserved, and Axiang's resentment should have dissipated by now. However, no matter how one looked at it, it was still a tragedy.
Perhaps if Axiang hadn't had an affair with Wu the Fatty, none of this would have happened. But there is no remedy for regret; what has happened has happened.
This incident only served to remind us that karma exists—those who do bad things will ultimately face consequences.
Fu Yan hadn't hung up yet and said to me, "Chen Fei, something else has happened here."
I was momentarily stunned by the words. Fu Yan said, "If you have time this afternoon, come over. I have something to discuss with you."
I agreed and hung up the phone. Gao Ling was focused on repairing the car, and after half an hour, he cursed, "Damn car, piece of junk."
Once we got in the car, it rolled over the red paper and headed towards the city. The wind rushed in through the open window, and I touched my back; there wasn't even a scar left. I wondered how Jiang Changsheng managed that.
But what exactly was wrong with my body? What had the Old Witch taken from me?
And was Jiang Changsheng truly alive? After we arrived in the city, the three of us went for breakfast. Afterwards, Gao Ling drove us to a dealership and paid in full for a car without batting an eye. This guy really had money.
He bought an Audi worth two to three hundred thousand without hesitation.
I said to Gao Ling, "You really are a rich man."
Gao Ling chuckled and said he didn't have any money. After buying the car, we left the dealership. Since it would take a while for the car to be ready, we took Gao Ling's BYD back home.
After taking a nap, I woke up to find Zhang Xun missing. I called Zhang Xun but got no answer; after several attempts with no success, I stopped trying.
After all, Zhang Xun often disappeared. Glancing at the time, it was one in the afternoon. I asked Gao Ling to accompany me to the police station. He had nothing else to do and agreed to come along, likely because of Brother Li's situation.
When we arrived at the police station, I went straight to meet Fu Yan. Due to confidentiality reasons, I asked Gao Ling to wait outside for me. Once in the interrogation room, I asked Fu Yan, "Did you find something?"
Fu Yan looked quite unwell; it was clear he hadn't slept well for several nights. He nodded and handed me a cigarette before lighting one for himself and taking a puff.
As Fu Yan smoked, he set up a projector and quickly fast-forwarded through some footage until he paused at a particular frame.
Fu Yan asked me, "What is this?"
At that moment, I was captivated by what appeared on screen: a pattern drawn on the ground that looked familiar yet held secrets I couldn't decipher. The pattern was magnified many times over.
Next to it stood Brother Li, grinning menacingly.
I stared for a moment before shaking my head; although I had seen this pattern before, I truly had no idea what it represented.
The video continued to play, and before long, a female corpse lay on the pattern, followed by the shocking scene of Brother Li violating the body.
I couldn't bear to watch this scene any longer. However, I noticed that Brother Li's complexion gradually turned darker during the act. Strange! Was Brother Li practicing some kind of dark sorcery?
As the video neared its end, I turned to Fu Yan and asked, "Can we go see the scene?"
Fu Yan hesitated for a moment before replying, "Sure."
We left the interrogation room and called Gao Ling to join us. When we arrived at the location, it was an old district where surveillance coverage was sparse, and most residents had moved away. This explained why Brother Li's heinous actions went unnoticed.
Upon reaching the site, the pattern was still there. Surrounding us were houses, and this pattern was located on a basketball court in a neighborhood.
I stared at the pattern, recalling how Zhang Fatty had reacted to it. It seemed to hold secrets when enlarged. But now, I couldn't find anything unusual.
Gao Ling was also staring intently and quickly said to me, "Fei, didn't we see this pattern at Uncle's house?"
Her words immediately caught Fu Yan's attention. Just as I was about to explain to Fu Yan, my phone rang. The caller ID showed it was Zhang Fatty.
I pressed the answer button, and Zhang Fatty immediately said, "Chen Fei, you shouldn't investigate this matter any further."
