Living Funeral
Zhang Pangzi said, "But I still haven't resolved my issues here!"
If I had to choose between Zhang Pangzi and Zhang Xun, I would undoubtedly trust Zhang Xun without hesitation. Zhang Pangzi was a bit rough around the edges. I told him that we shouldn't worry about things here for now; just a moment ago, Zhang Xun called and urged us to leave the funeral home immediately.
Zhang Pangzi asked, "Could it really be fake?"
I didn't waste any more words. Since Zhang Xun had said so, there must be a reason behind it.
Zhang Pangzi didn't say much more and followed me downstairs. Just then, a wave of black smoke surged up from beneath our feet. Zhang Pangzi's expression changed as we quickened our pace. However, as soon as we reached the ground floor, I felt my legs turn to jelly, losing all strength.
Zhang Pangzi felt the same way. He asked me, "What's wrong?"
How should I know what was wrong? At that moment, we could only lean on each other as we struggled to move forward.
Zhang Pangzi groaned, "I can't go on. I'm too exhausted."
I glanced back upstairs; the door had been broken open. Then I heard footsteps approaching us, the sound echoing in the darkness. My heart began to race; I felt okay enough to keep moving.
But Zhang Pangzi weighed at least two hundred pounds—damn it—he was leaning entirely on me.
I snapped at him, "Can you walk by yourself for once?"
He replied, "I can't move anymore."
I insisted, "If you don't start moving, we're going to die."
With that, I pinched Zhang Pangzi hard. At that moment, it felt like we were under some kind of spell. Fortunately, the car wasn't far away; we slowly made our way to it. I asked Zhang Pangzi for the keys.
I opened the door.
At that moment, Fake Zhang Xun had already come down and was walking towards us. I thought to myself that if we didn't hurry, it would be the end. As he got closer, I shouted at Zhang Fatty, "If you don't get in the car now, I swear I won't care about you anymore."
Upon hearing this, Zhang Fatty finally seemed to be stimulated and cursed, "Damn it, Chen Fei, are you really that heartless?"
I replied, "If you have the energy to curse, hurry up and get in the car!" At this point, Fake Zhang Xun was getting closer and I could already see the sinister smile at the corner of his mouth.
I decided not to wait any longer and started the car. Although my body felt weak, I could still manage to control the steering wheel. When Zhang Fatty saw me start the car, he cursed at me again and then rushed out without closing the door, landing right on top of me.
I couldn't care less at that moment; I pressed the gas pedal and took off. Behind us, Fake Zhang Xun chased after us but gave up after a couple of hundred meters.
I drove for a while but felt my strength fading. Zhang Fatty lay across my lap and said, "Chen Fei, I feel terrible. What should I do?"
I had no words because I felt terrible too. The car was still moving, but I had no idea how far we had gone or how long we had been driving. Eventually, in a daze, I felt a bump and then everything went black.
When I opened my eyes again, I found myself lying in a hospital bed with Zhang Fatty beside me.
There were only two beds in this room—just me and Zhang Fatty. We were both wrapped in bandages. I called out to Zhang Fatty, but he remained asleep.
I called for a nurse, and soon one came in. I asked who had brought us to the hospital.
The nurse replied, "A passerby called for an ambulance. Your friend will be here shortly."
After you were brought into the hospital, there was a call that came in which we answered. He is your friend, and he has covered all your medical expenses so far.
I paused for a moment and asked, "Who is he? Is it Gao Ling?"
The nurse said, "No, it's Du Feng. He'll come over himself later, and you can ask him directly then."
I replied, "Okay," and then asked, "How bad are my injuries?" The nurse responded, "You're lucky; it's just a minor scrape."
Quickly, I asked about Zhang, "What about him?"
The nurse said, "He's the same as you." Hearing this made me finally breathe a sigh of relief. But why did this Du Feng person pay for my medical expenses? Moreover, I had Fu Yan look into this person, and the result came back with no information.
This guy was clearly impersonating a staff member from the Civil Affairs Department.
The nurse handed my phone back to me, and I hurriedly called Gao Ling. When she answered, she asked, "Why didn't you come back last night?"
I told her, "You need to come to the hospital right away; I'm hospitalized."
Gao Ling paused for a few seconds before responding, "What hospital? I'll be there immediately." At that moment, sunlight streamed in from outside. Before long, I heard Zhang's painful groans and his muffled curses directed at me.
I called out to Zhang, and finally, he reacted.
After opening his eyes, he asked, "Where am I?"
I replied, "In the hospital."
Zhang seemed unfazed and simply said, "As long as it's not Yama's Hall, I'm fine." I got off the bed and warned him, "Be on guard; someone we don't know might come by."
"Who?" Zhang asked.
I had to clarify again, "It's someone we don't know; what else can I say?" Zhang lay there stubbornly refusing to move—damn that lazy fat guy.
I stared at the door, and about half an hour later, someone pushed it open. However, it wasn't Du Feng who came in, but Gao Ling. Upon seeing me, Gao Ling asked, "What happened?"
I replied that I had been in a car accident last night.
"Are you okay?"
I assured her that I was fine and would be discharged soon. Gao Ling said, "That's good. Have you eaten? I'll go get you some food."
"Get me a portion too," said Zhang Pangzi.
Zhang Pangzi and Gao Ling had never met before, so after glancing at him, she asked, "Who are you?"
Zhang Pangzi replied, "I'm Chen Fei's good friend."
Gao Ling looked at me, and I nodded to confirm. She quickly left to buy food. Damn it, ever since I got involved in this mess, I had been hospitalized several times.
Zhang Pangzi turned to me and asked, "Who was the culprit last night?"
I told him, "The culprit was you! Damn it! If you hadn't gotten in the car and crushed my leg, I wouldn't have crashed."
"I didn't want that to happen either," he said.
Thinking back on last night's events made me feel frustrated. Lying on the hospital bed, I was also waiting for Du Feng to arrive. However, no matter how long I waited, he didn't show up. When Gao Ling returned with the food, Du Feng still hadn't come. After entering, Gao Ling said to me, "The deal with the massage parlor has been finalized."
I casually asked how much it cost.
Gao Ling replied, "Five figures."
"That's not bad," I said. I then asked her what was going on over there. Gao Ling explained that she didn't know the specifics yet but mentioned that strange incidents had been occurring at the massage parlor recently. Apparently, one of the masseuses had gotten into a dispute with a customer because he hadn't paid for the services. In the end, he was beaten to death by the parlor's enforcers, and now they were seeking revenge.
I asked her if there were any discoveries so far.
"Gao Ling, you haven't recovered yet. You need to rest, but this matter still requires your attention! Otherwise, I won't be able to handle it either." I nodded and took out my phone to call Zhang Xun.
I still hadn't figured out what had happened at the funeral home last night. After a few rings, the call connected. I called out to Zhang Xun, and he responded. I asked, "When are you coming over? I'm at the hospital."
Zhang Xun replied, "I'll come over tonight."
"Alright," I said before hanging up. Zhang Pangzi remarked, "What’s the point of calling him now?"
I turned to Zhang Pangzi and said, "Do you think we're safe lying here?"
Zhang Pangzi paused for a moment and replied, "That's not certain." I nodded; that's why I called Zhang Xun over. I also realized that Du Feng probably wouldn't come. During this time, I had asked the nurse what he looked like.
However, the nurse said she didn't know. Since that was the case, I didn't press further. As night fell, I told Gao Ling to go home. After Gao Ling left, I asked Zhang Pangzi, "What were you doing at the funeral home last night?"
Zhang Pangzi said, "Chen Fei, didn't I show you that video before?"
"And so?" I replied.
Zhang Pangzi continued, "Do you remember the building in the video?"
I nodded. Zhang Pangzi added, "But that's not the main point; the key is who filmed the video."
