Living Funeral
At that moment, I suddenly heard Nian Chen's voice calling my name. Upon hearing Nian Chen, I thought to myself, this is bad!
Jiang Changsheng said coldly, "Just in time for you to come. I'll send you on your way." I wanted to refuse, but even if I screamed at the top of my lungs here, no one would hear me. I was on the brink of death, but I didn't want Nian Chen to die.
I wanted Jiang Changsheng to stop, but I felt utterly powerless. I wanted Nian Chen to leave, but again, I was helpless.
Just then, someone whispered in my ear, "Have you become pessimistic?"
At first, I thought it was Jiang Changsheng speaking, but upon listening closely, I realized it was not him at all; it was another version of myself. This other self radiated a golden light, and I knew at a glance that this must be the final Book of Ten Thousand Ghosts.
But hadn't this soul already merged with me peacefully? Why was it separating now? What was going on?
Yet what he said was true; I had become pessimistic. I felt powerless, merely waiting to be slaughtered, unable to protect even the person I cared about.
The other me continued, "Actually, we have been apart for a hundred years. When you entered the coffin to find me, we couldn't merge at all. But now we can because of his help; your current soul's capacity is at its best."
I didn't understand at first.
The other me went on, "Yin-Yang Fate—what is Yin-Yang Fate? It is the combination of Yin life and Yang life. Right now, you only have Yang life while your Yin life hasn't returned. But now is an opportunity; it's time."
I asked what would happen after completion. "After completion," he replied, "you will reach your peak state. Yin and Yang—this world is composed of Yin and Yang. If they become unbalanced, it will lead to suffering for all living beings. You should understand this. Over the years, we have endured all kinds of difficulties. Jiang Changsheng has considered everything meticulously; however, even the wisest can make mistakes. Moreover, he is not a sage. Just like how you can understand the Book of All Beings given by Transparent Master, he cannot."
"Fly," he urged. "Your master taught you to be insincere with others, but that doesn't mean you should let evil people bully you. Punish Evil Spirits; eliminate Evil Spirits—wasn't that your original intention? Come on."
I nodded and began walking toward the final Book of Ten Thousand Ghosts—the last version of myself.
At this point, Yin and Yang merged together, releasing a brilliant golden light in an instant as Nian Chen's sobbing echoed in my ears.
Hearing Nian Chen's cries made my heart ache. I turned to Jiang Changsheng and said, "Changsheng, you've really gone too far."
After my words fell, Jiang Changsheng replied incredulously, "How could this be? You should have died and completely disappeared; how could you still be alive?"
I broke free from the binding black mist and stepped out of the darkness. A faint golden light emanated from me before finally settling into calmness.
Nian Chen's collar was stained red with blood, looking as if he were on the brink of death, his soul ready to disperse. I called out to him, and he responded with my name, Fei.
The dark energy surrounding Jiang Changsheng rapidly dissipated, and soon his soul followed suit. Jiang Changsheng let out a wretched scream, but then he said, "To kill me is not so easy, Senior Brother. I didn't expect you to have a backup plan; you truly are cunning!"
My aura flowed around me, and at that moment, I ignored Jiang Changsheng. I held Nian Chen tightly. "Hang in there," I urged him. "You must hold on." Just then, many people entered the tomb—Hu Qingming and Xiao Tongwen had arrived, along with Xiong Ao, Du Feng, and Longting.
Li Guang was also present.
However, Hu Qingming and Xiao Tongwen clearly had not grasped the situation yet.
Xiao Tongwen asked, "What are you two brothers doing?"
Hu Qingming, being a clever man, replied, "Internal strife."
Xiao Wentong still seemed incredulous and said, "No way." At this point, Jiang Changsheng had recovered somewhat but appeared disoriented. He asked Qingming and Wentong if they were willing to stand by his side. I glanced at them but said nothing.
At this stage of affairs, words were futile. It was only about Nian Chen...
Nian Chen then said to me, "Fei, no matter what happens, I will stand by your side. Even if everyone betrays you, I will remain loyal." His voice grew weaker with each word. I called out for Nian Chen repeatedly; he was supposed to be called Feng Li.
I urged Nian Chen to hold on. Yet his eyes slowly closed. My heart felt like it was being torn apart as Nian Chen's grip on my hand gradually slipped away. I gently laid him down and stood up. Taking a deep breath, I said to Jiang Changsheng, "From now on, our bond as brothers is severed."
Jiang Changsheng snorted coldly as I walked toward him. The aura around me formed numerous dense Bagua Diagrams. The dark energy surrounding Jiang Changsheng surged forth again, rushing toward me. I tore through the black mist directly; golden light flashed and flickered until the darkness vanished completely.
Changsheng, right or wrong—we will clarify this today. With firm steps, I moved forward.
Jiang Changsheng took out the Soul Seal while I produced the Yin Yang Flag. The two artifacts clashed as my soul surged toward him. Jiang Changsheng's soul emerged from his body as well; however, his soul was red. When our souls collided, the Soul Seal and Yin Yang Flag met in a fierce clash.
We battled intensely until finally the Yin-Yang Ghost Path opened under the collision of the Soul Seal and Yin Yang Flag.
Xiao Tongwen shouted excitedly, "The Yin-Yang Ghost Path has opened! Changsheng!"
I thought to myself, this is bad; the Yin-Yang Ghost Path has opened, and Jiang Changsheng has summoned a hundred thousand evil souls to heed my command. As soon as I finished speaking, countless vengeful and malevolent spirits surged in from outside. Jiang Changsheng continued, "Let’s set off!"
"Mr. Li, thank you for your help," Jiang Changsheng said.
Li Guang acknowledged him with a nod.
I quickly drew out my Yin Yang Flag and blocked the entrance of the Yin-Yang Ghost Path. If these hundred thousand evil souls entered the path together, the Underworld would surely descend into chaos, leading to an inversion of yin and yang and a life of misery for the people.
"Chen Fei, this is inevitable; you should stop being so stubborn," Li Guang said.
I replied to Li Guang, "Do you remember what we talked about? Your great calamity has arrived."
Upon hearing this, Li Guang's expression changed slightly. He then calculated with his fingers and said, "Chen Fei, even if today is my great calamity, having come this far, I will go against it." At that moment, Xiong Ao interjected, "Old thief, don’t forget that I’m here to help." Xiong Ao stepped in front of me.
I looked at Xiong Ao in surprise.
Xiao Wentong said, "Changsheng, Chen Fei, you were supposed to be like brothers; why has it come to this?" Xiao Wentong lamented.
Hu Qingming directly stated, "Chen Fei, I am willing to join you in stopping the evil souls."
Hu Qingming then walked towards me. Xiao Wentong sighed and said, "Changsheng, I also believe Chen Fei is right; thus we can only be enemies now."
"You all truly disappoint me!" Jiang Changsheng exclaimed angrily. With a wave of his hand, the evil souls advanced. Longting and Du Feng joined in as well; both sides quickly engaged in battle. However, we were ultimately outnumbered and could not withstand Jiang Changsheng's power.
Then I saw Xiong Ao's spirit dissipate, followed by Xiao Wentong's and Hu Qingming's souls fading away one after another.
"But even if we die, Chen Fei, we do not blame you," Jiang Changsheng said. "This is the fate of those who oppose me." Jiang Changsheng personally led the charge with the evil souls. I fought with all my might to stop him but ultimately failed.
Some evil souls broke through my defenses and rushed into the Yin-Yang Ghost Path. My soul began to disintegrate; Jiang Changsheng was merely a remnant of his former self.
The speed at which my soul was disintegrating increased rapidly. Just then, I heard the sounds of battle behind me. I saw Ling Yu; perhaps the Underworld had sent people out to confront us. Soon after, I spotted the corpse within Gao Ling’s body.
He must be the Guardian of the Underworld. When Li Guang sent me to kill him, there was a conspiracy behind it. If I had killed him, then no one would be able to stop him now.
The soul must completely dissipate; once dead, nothing would concern me anymore. However, with Ling Yu around, there should be no problems. Deep down, I still believed in Ling Yu. My soul scattered into golden specks of light, but was quickly gathered by the Yin Yang Flag.
In my daze, I seemed to hear a voice.
It was Gao Ling's voice. Gao Ling said, "Chen Fei, how did you end up here?"
But I no longer had the strength to respond. It felt as if I had fallen into an eternal slumber. I didn't know how long it had been when someone began shaking the Yin Yang Flag. I fell from the Yin Yang Flag, my soul reassembling within it, though still very weak.
At that moment, I saw Ling Yu and the dead person inside Gao Ling's body. I also saw broken souls drifting around. The path had returned to silence; the sounds of battle had vanished without a trace.
Ling Yu said, "Fei, you're awake."
I murmured in response and asked what had happened.
Ling Yu replied that fortunately, the King of Hell had revived in time, and with Jiang Changsheng fighting alongside you against the remnants of your soul, this situation was finally suppressed. You can rest assured that from now on, the Yin-Yang Ghost Path will reopen, and the order of yin and yang will return to normal. Both the Underworld and the Netherworld will find peace and tranquility.
The dead person inside Gao Ling walked towards me. Ling Yu introduced him as the King of Hell, who had been residing in Gao Ling's body to recover from injuries.
The King of Hell said, "Chen Fei, you are indeed strong; you survived this. A hundred years ago, I was foolish and was severely injured by you while living in his body. Now I understand that all order must be maintained and not allowed to be disrupted by conspirators."
I looked at the King of Hell and suddenly felt he resembled someone familiar, though I couldn't recall who it was. I said to him, "You caused Gao Ling's death; you need to resolve that matter."
I glanced at the King of Hell again and noticed he indeed bore some resemblance to Gao Ling.
The King of Hell said, "Chen Fei, don't worry about Gao Ling's resurrection; I'll take care of it. I left a body behind in the Underworld for this purpose. I will bring Gao Ling back to life."
I nodded and said thank you.
The King of Hell replied, "No need for thanks; if anyone should be grateful, it should be me thanking you. Without your help, I wouldn't even be standing before you now."
At that moment, I glanced at Nian Chen's corpse. Even after everything was over, I held onto my original intentions; yet Nian Chen was dead... My breathing became heavy as the King of Hell said, "As for your friends—Xiao Tongwen, Hu Qingming, Xiong Ao—I will gather their souls together and arrange for their reincarnation."
I said thank you again, but the King of Hell didn't need to respond.
As I looked at Nian Chen's lifeless body, my eyes began to well up with tears. I walked towards Nian Chen, thinking back to a century ago when I had brought her back. Yet now, a hundred years later, I had caused her death. It was ultimately my fault. Holding Nian Chen in my arms felt like my heart was being sliced apart, piece by piece.
At that moment, Ling Yu approached me and asked, "Do you want to save her?"
After Ling Yu spoke, I immediately looked up at her and replied that of course I wanted to save her. Did she have a way?
Ling Yu said there was a way. "Do you remember your True Dragon Qi? I hid it within Nian Chen's body. She has survived all this time because of your True Dragon Qi. Now, her death is due to the dispersal of that energy. If you want to save her, you can transfer your True Dragon Qi to her, and she will come back to life. However, if you give it to her, you may not survive yourself. Think carefully."
I replied without hesitation that there was no need to think. I was willing to give it to her.
After saying this, I began to channel my True Dragon Qi into Nian Chen's body. My lips gently touched hers as a stream of energy flowed from me into her.
Once I completed this act, I turned to Ling Yu and said that if Nian Chen ever asked where I had gone, she should tell her that I went far away, to a very distant place. As I spoke these words, my soul began to disintegrate and slowly transformed into specks of light before finally dissipating. Though my heart was heavy with sorrow, I did not want Nian Chen to be sad because of me.
I don't know how much time passed, but suddenly in my daze, it felt like I heard Nian Chen softly calling out my name...
(THE END)
