Suddenly, the Mountain Demon transformed into a dark mist and lunged toward us. 0

My heart tightened as I grabbed Feng Jie and immediately threw myself to the ground, narrowly avoiding the Mountain Demon's fierce charge. However, the danger was far from over. 0

The Mountain Demon lunged at Feng Jie and me again. If it caught us, we would be in serious trouble. I pulled Feng Jie up once more, but before we could start running, the Mountain Demon suddenly seized Feng Jie's arm and let out a strange, maniacal laugh. 0

In an instant, the air was filled with the echo of the Mountain Demon's laughter, chilling and eerie. 0

"Wang Niu, help me!" Feng Jie cried out in fear, losing all rationality as she struggled desperately. 0

At that moment, my mind was in chaos; I felt utterly helpless. Looking at the panicked Feng Jie made me feel even more lost. The sight of the Mountain Demon before us sent shivers down my spine. 0

After a moment, I realized I needed to act. I quietly took out my phone and dialed Captain Wu. I thought surely he would sense something was wrong and rush over from the Cursed Graveyard to rescue us. 0

But I had underestimated the Mountain Demon's intelligence. In an instant, it charged at me, its large hand gripping my throat and making it hard for me to breathe. To make matters worse, it spotted my phone hidden behind me, sneered, and swatted it away. 0

That phone was our last lifeline; I had no idea if Captain Wu had answered my call. 0

"Damn humans! Do you think after all this time mingling among you that I lack intelligence?" The Mountain Demon glared at me with a predatory gaze, as if it intended to toy with me until my demise. 0

Instantly, my hair stood on end as the Mountain Demon drew closer. Suddenly, its mouth opened wide, revealing long, sharp teeth. In a swift motion, pain shot through my neck as the Mountain Demon bit down. 0

Before long, I felt my consciousness beginning to fade. Just as I closed my eyes, I seemed to see Feng Jie charging toward the Mountain Demon. 0

I don't know how much time passed when suddenly urgent voices reached my ears—Uncle Tiger and Captain Wu—but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't wake up. It felt as if someone was pressing down on me tightly, binding me. 0

It wasn't until a strong wave of pain surged through my body that I jolted awake. When I opened my eyes, I found myself in a hospital room. 0

Seeing that I was awake, Uncle Tiger began removing the clothes draped over me. Looking down, I realized I was wearing garments made of white paper cutouts. 0

I blinked in confusion and asked, "Uncle, what happened? What about Feng Jie?" 0

Uncle Tiger's eyes flickered for a moment before he spoke. "You were injured by the Mountain Demon. It injected its evil energy into you to try to turn you into another version of itself. If Captain Wu and I hadn't arrived in time to eliminate the Mountain Demon, you would have been wandering in the Underworld by now. Wang Niu, do you know how long you were unconscious?" 0

I stared blankly and shook my head. Uncle Tiger sighed and said, "A full week." 0

I widened my eyes in surprise, but as I thought about it, something felt off. Just as I was about to ask Uncle Tiger, he waved his hand, telling me to rest well before leaving. 0

This only deepened my concern that something might have happened to Feng Jie. Throughout our conversation, Uncle Tiger had never mentioned Feng Jie, seemingly avoiding the name altogether. My heart sank; surely nothing had happened to Feng Jie. 0

Suddenly, I lost my mood entirely. I jumped out of bed and headed for the door when A Yao appeared at the entrance, carrying some food. 0

"Wang Niu, you're awake!" A Yao exclaimed excitedly as she rushed towards me. 0

Still recovering from my recent awakening, I wasn't fully back to my strength and couldn't withstand A Yao's momentum. We both tumbled back onto the bed, and for a moment, we locked eyes. The atmosphere shifted; it was the first time we had been so close. Usually, we only held hands, and we had never even kissed. 0

I wondered if it was due to everything that had happened, but at that moment, I really wanted to kiss A Yao. The desire grew stronger, and my body unconsciously leaned closer to her. 0

A Yao blinked in surprise, her face quickly turning red as she seemed unsure of what to do. I closed my eyes, preparing to kiss her when Captain Wu barged in, calling my name. 0

A Yao and I froze for a few seconds before reacting, quickly getting up from the bed. A Yao's face was so red it looked like it might bleed, and I felt incredibly embarrassed that we had been caught. 0

However, Captain Wu seemed unfazed and jokingly asked if we had finished kissing. If we wanted to continue, he could step out. 0

I shot a glare at Captain Wu; there was no mood left for kissing now that the atmosphere had been ruined. Annoyed, I asked him what was going on. 0

Captain Wu glanced at A Yao with an expression that suggested he wanted to say something but hesitated. A Yao understood his implication and made an excuse to leave. 0

Seeing Captain Wu so serious and mysterious made me think something significant had happened. I hurriedly asked him what was wrong. 0

To my surprise, Captain Wu pulled out a bouquet of flowers from behind him as if performing a magic trick and said they were for my recovery. I felt speechless at that moment. 0

Noticing my blank expression, Captain Wu chuckled awkwardly and cleared his throat. "Alright, little brother, I'm not joking anymore. I have something serious to tell you, but I hope you're mentally prepared." 0

I nodded in response. Captain Wu paused for a moment; his expression was complicated as he said, "Feng Yi is dead." 0

Although I had a vague feeling something bad had happened to Feng Yi, hearing Captain Wu say it out loud struck me like lightning. I stood frozen in place, overwhelmed by a wave of numbness. 0

I looked at Captain Wu in disbelief. He sighed and said, "Actually, Uncle Tiger didn't want to tell you this fact because he thought you might not be able to handle it. But sooner or later, you would find out. Feng Yi died trying to save you; she was torn apart by the Mountain Demon." 0

If it weren't for my hands propping myself up beside the bed, I would have surely fallen to the floor. I really couldn't believe what Captain Wu had just said. 0

"Are you okay, little brother?" Captain Wu looked at me with concern. 0

I shook my head, feeling a heavy weight in my heart. Feng Jie’s death had hit me hard. For the next few days, I isolated myself in the hospital room, not wanting to see anyone. I felt utterly despondent. 0

Uncle Tiger was helpless; he tried to talk to me several times, but I just couldn't pull myself out of this state. In the end, he decided to let me calm down on my own. 0

Eventually, I accepted the reality of the situation. I called Captain Wu and told him I wanted to see Feng Jie. He agreed and soon picked me up to take me to the police station, warning me to be mentally prepared for what I was about to see. 0

I nodded, and Captain Wu led me to the area where the bodies were kept. 0

As he opened the door, a rush of cold air hit me, making me shiver. It was freezing inside, but that was typical for a place like this. 0

Once inside, it wasn't as dark and terrifying as I had imagined. The room was quite bright, and the bodies were neatly arranged on metal racks, each one looking like they were merely asleep, their expressions surprisingly gentle and not frightening at all. 0

Seeing my astonishment, Captain Wu said, "These bodies look so peaceful because they have been prepared by an embalmer. They looked quite different when they died." 0

I couldn't help but marvel at how impressive an embalmer's job was; they could restore even a deceased person's appearance. 0

Then Captain Wu pointed down a small corridor and said, "The room at the very end is where Feng Jie’s body is. Do you want to go in and take a look?" 0
