The barrier shattered, and not only that, the altar split in two, with a dark mist suddenly seeping out from the center.
"Little brother, look! A Yao has collapsed! What's going on with this dark mist?" Captain Wu exclaimed as he got back on his feet, brushing off the dust from his clothes.
A sense of foreboding gripped my heart as I rushed towards A Yao, who lay on the ground. Just as I was about to help her up and leave, the dark mist suddenly coalesced into a massive creature.
"Little brother, be careful!" Captain Wu's anxious voice reached me.
As I turned to look at Captain Wu, a chilling presence surged from behind me. My body shivered, and before I could react, the black mist lunged at me. It felt as if a stone had struck my back, and I collapsed to the ground along with A Yao.
The dark mist seemed to possess an overwhelming malevolence as it charged at me again. I quickly dodged to the side, narrowly avoiding its attack. However, where it had aimed, a large hole appeared as if corroded by some unseen force.
A chill ran down my spine as I realized the consequences; had I not evaded in time, I might have ended up as nothing more than bones.
I took down the hanging compass, bit my hand to draw blood, and let a few drops fall onto it.
The compass glowed once more. I carefully positioned it in the most advantageous spot, bracing for another assault from the dark mist.
To my surprise, the mist seemed to sense something and vanished.
"Little brother, what's going on? Why did it leave?" Captain Wu jogged over to my side.
I glanced in the direction where the mist had disappeared and felt a sense of clarity. "Let's not worry about that for now. We need to take A Yao back to the secret chamber."
Captain Wu nodded and helped me carry A Yao back to the chamber.
Upon returning to the secret chamber, I was taken aback to find Ruoxi there as well.
I felt a mix of surprise and guilt; after all, my relationship with A Yao was still complicated and unclear.
But Ruoxi didn't seem angry. When she saw us, the tension on her face gradually eased. She walked up to me and extended her hand, helping A Yao onto a nearby bed.
"It seems like someone has taken her Yang Soul," Ruoxi said, furrowing her brows, her tone serious as her gaze remained fixed on A Yao.
I paused, a chill running through me as I asked Ruoxi what that meant.
Ruoxi looked at me, her eyes reflecting a complex emotion. "It means she has been stripped of her qualifications as a normal person. If her Yang Soul is destroyed, she will become a ghost, trapped in that state for eternity. And you all will become sworn enemies."
"Sworn enemies?" I widened my eyes at Ruoxi.
Ruoxi nodded. "The ones who took her Yang Soul must be from the Ghost Gate Cult. They harbor a deep hatred for you and won't let her go easily. They will use Evil Arts to corrupt her Yang Soul into an evil spirit and inject their hatred for you into that spirit. From then on, you will be enemies for life; she will be destined to kill you to free herself. If she fails to do so within the time set by the Ghost Gate Cult, then her body—this corpse before you—will automatically die, leaving her trapped in a painful abyss, suffering endlessly."
Ruoxi's words sent a shiver down my spine.
I asked Ruoxi if there was any other way. Her brows knitted together, and her expression grew complicated, which made me anxious. I urged her to speak up when Xiaomei stepped in front of me from behind, glaring at me with discontent. "If she hadn't gone out on her own, this wouldn't have happened! It's all her fault! Why should Princess go save her? Do you know what a huge price that will cost Princess? Don't be foolish."
"Enough," Ruoxi interrupted Xiaomei, turning to me with a serious expression. "Do you really want to save her?"
I hesitated, looking at Ruoxi's face and sensing something was off.
"I..." My heart twisted in conflict as I struggled to find the right words. I desperately wanted to save A Yao, but Xiaomei's earlier words echoed in my mind.
"Speak up! If you want to save her, I will," Ruoxi insisted.
I gritted my teeth and nodded. Ruoxi smiled lightly and walked toward the exit. I was taken aback; there seemed to be an air of helplessness in that smile.
"What are you standing there for? Hurry up and go with Princess! Do you know what it takes to retrieve A Yao's Yang Soul?" Xiaomei urged anxiously.
"What do you mean?" My heart tightened as I looked at Xiaomei. I wanted to save A Yao, but I didn't want anything to happen to Ruoxi either.
"Ha, you really are foolish. Do you know that it's impossible to obtain A Yao's Yang Soul from the Ghost Gate Cult? The only way is to modify the Heavenly Book, and doing so comes at a price: sacrificing half of your cultivation. Do you have any idea how much suffering Princess has endured to achieve her current level of power?" Xiaomei said.
"Heavenly Book," I paused, realizing that when I visited the Heavenly Book Pavilion, Ruoxi must have had the Heavenly Book with her.
"I really don't know what you're thinking," Xiaomei said before disappearing.
"Little brother, you should go find that girl named Ruoxi. A Yao needs saving, but we can't let her suffer. Even though you were once in a relationship with A Yao, your current wife is that girl. How can you allow your wife to sacrifice half of her cultivation to save your ex-girlfriend?" Captain Wu sighed.
At that moment, my heart was in turmoil, filled with complex emotions. After a while, I stepped out of the secret chamber and emerged from the cave, unsure of how to find Ruoxi.
I called out for Xiaomei in my mind, but she still did not respond, which only heightened my anxiety. I summoned the child.
"Brother Wang Niu, Sister Ruoxi is in her own barrier. Look over there; there's a big tree. Sister Ruoxi is sitting under it, and she has already opened the Heavenly Book," the child pointed at the large tree ahead.
I looked over, but there was no one under the tree; perhaps it was blocked by the barrier.
"What do I need to do to enter Ruoxi's created barrier?" I asked the child.
"You can't enter. If you force your way in, it might hurt Sister Ruoxi instead."
I walked up to the large tree and asked the child for Ruoxi's exact location before sitting down. Although there was a barrier and the space was different, my position was aligned with Ruoxi's.
"Ruoxi, can you hear my voice? I don't want you to make such a sacrifice anymore; please stop," I silently urged in my heart.
Ruoxi remained unresponsive. At that moment, I felt a surge of warmth emanating from me, followed by a bolt of lightning striking down upon me.
My body collapsed to the ground as if it had exploded, and Ruoxi appeared beside me, also unconscious.
I quickly lifted Ruoxi into my arms. Her face was extremely pale, and there were traces of blood at the corners of her mouth; she lay there in a state of faintness. The words Xiaomei had said echoed in my mind: could it be true that Ruoxi's cultivation had really been halved by heaven?
"Ruoxi, wake up," I gently shook her.
After a while, Ruoxi finally reacted, slowly opening her eyes and smiling at me. My heart suddenly ached, filled with an indescribable feeling.
"You really used the Heavenly Book," I asked.
Ruoxi still wore that faint smile on her face. She nodded and weakly said, "This is the only way to save her. You should go check on her; I'll be fine after a moment."
Seeing Ruoxi like this made my heart ache even more. I picked her up and carried her toward the secret chamber, with Captain Wu following closely behind.
Once we entered the secret chamber, A Yao had already woken up and seemed to be in better condition.
I glanced at A Yao but quickly shifted my focus back to Ruoxi. At this moment, my attention should be on Ruoxi.
I laid Ruoxi down on a nearby bed and asked Captain Wu to fetch some water. Then, I took out a bag I had been carrying and retrieved something from inside.
"Wang Niu, do you have feelings for her?" A Yao approached me at that moment.
I instinctively shuddered and placed the item in Ruoxi's hand. After giving her a reassuring smile, I turned to A Yao and said seriously, "Please don't joke around. Ruoxi has sacrificed so much to save you. Right now, I need to find a way to replenish the energy she has lost."
Upon hearing this, A Yao's expression changed dramatically. She immediately became very aggressive, rushing over and yanking Ruoxi off the bed. I was taken aback but quickly reacted to protect Ruoxi.
