"The only way is for you to do nothing and wait for the Ghost Gate Sect Master to take you to the Underworld. Listen to his words and turn the Underworld into the Ghost Gate Cult; this will also benefit us," the child said seriously.
"Isn't doing nothing too passive? We might as well go directly to the Listening Pavilion and kill that divine beast. Wouldn't that solve everything?" Captain Wu replied, looking quite helpless.
The child rolled his eyes at Captain Wu and said, "If it were that simple, I would have sent you to do it already. Do you know that once you return to your place, you'll find that your every move has already been monitored by someone sent by the Ghost Gate Sect Master?"
The child's words left both Captain Wu and me stunned.
On the way, we fell silent, as the child's warning echoed in our minds.
After returning to our place, just as we closed the door, a woman appeared outside, calling for us. I was immediately startled. Did she not know our current situation?
I quickly pulled her inside. "What are you doing here so late?"
The woman noticed something off in my tone and paused for a moment before asking what was wrong.
I pondered for a moment before saying, "Don't you know we've been monitored by the Sect Master? If he sees you here, he'll definitely become suspicious."
"I know, but I still came because isn't this normal? After all, love between men and women," she said suddenly making a strange gesture that left us both awkward and made odd sounds.
"This..." Captain Wu glanced at me awkwardly. I felt quite embarrassed as well, so I told her to stop. She rolled her eyes at me and said, "Are you two stupid? This is called acting; do you understand?"
Captain Wu and I were taken aback for a moment before we realized and directly asked her if she had come here for something specific.
The woman put away her previous demeanor and spoke seriously. "Yes, I have something for you."
Saying this, she took out a scarf from her bosom. On the scarf were some drawings that looked like a map with detailed annotations.
"What is this?" I asked curiously.
The woman replied, "This shows all the locations of the Listening Pavilion. There are very detailed notes on it. You need to study it carefully. Also, there are mechanisms in the Listening Pavilion; it's very impressive, so be careful."
I took the scarf from the woman's hand and examined it; it was indeed a fine piece.
"Have you been to the Listening Pavilion? How do you know so much?" Captain Wu asked the woman, puzzled.
The woman shook her head. "I haven't been there, but I found this image in the Evil Tome Pavilion. There is a place in our sect that records significant events throughout our history; few people know about it."
"Is there a way for you to draw us all the locations? We would like to know more," Captain Wu began, but before he could finish, I nudged him and gave him a look. He stopped speaking. We couldn't reveal too much to the woman; after all, she was sharing this information with us out of self-interest. If someone offered her a greater benefit, she might betray us.
"What's wrong?" The woman looked at Captain Wu's strange expression and asked curiously.
I answered for Captain Wu, "He's fine. Do you know what the Underworld has to do with our sect?"
The woman paused, her gaze suddenly becoming particularly strange as she said, "Why are you asking this question? Has something happened?"
I hesitated for a moment but quickly realized how to respond to her. "Because the sect leader has given me a particularly important task, and I want to understand it better to avoid failure."
The woman seemed to understand something and said, "I see. It's not really a problem. It's just that there's a rule: No Interference Between Wells and Rivers. Previously, people from the Ghost Gate Cult were not allowed to have any relations with those from Heaven or the Underworld because they were fundamentally opposed and would never collaborate. However, since the current sect leader took over the Ghost Gate Cult, those rules have changed. Perhaps the leader wants to use their power to dominate all three realms. But for us, it's a good thing; if we can bring all three realms under the Ghost Gate Cult's control, then this world will belong to us."
The more she spoke, the more excited she became. I didn't want to hear any more, so I dismissed her. She took the hint and left.
"Little brother, do you think we'll be in danger when we go to the Underworld?" Captain Wu expressed his concerns.
I nodded; there would definitely be dangers, but we needed to think of ways to resolve them.
The Ghost Gate Sect Master might be leading us down into the Underworld as a way to send us to our deaths because there was Yama Lord down there. Yama Lord naturally followed Heaven's orders, but now Heaven was in chaos as well. Yama Lord's attitude could become uncertain. Even though Yin Officials had already sided with the Ghost Gate Sect Master, their influence was still not as significant as Yama Lord's; ultimately, everything depended on Yama Lord.
I suspected that the Ghost Gate Sect Master intended for us to go down into the Underworld to test Yama Lord's stance.
After understanding all of this, my heart felt much lighter.
The next evening, we set off with the Ghost Gate Sect Master. The atmosphere was quite grand, with the Ghost Gate Sect Master seated in the center on a Palanquin, while Captain Wu and I occupied the Palanquins on either side.
I felt a mix of excitement and anxiety; this was my first time going to the Underworld, and I had no idea what it would be like.
We exited the school area and ventured deep into the mountains. As we entered, a sense of darkness enveloped us, making it hard to see anything.
Fortunately, someone beside us lit a lantern. Although it was dim, it was enough to barely make out the path ahead.
As we moved further in, I noticed that the lanterns suddenly changed color.
They turned an eerie green, creating a strange and chilling atmosphere.
At that moment, I heard the sound of a door creaking open from afar. Could it be that we were nearing the Underworld?
Yet, the surroundings still looked like the mountains. Just then, I saw a swirling mass of eerie green mist begin to appear and slowly expand.
Our Palanquin was lowered by someone.
Those holding lanterns walked up to the eerie green mist and raised their lanterns high. At that moment, a cold voice echoed, "The Underworld is now open."
From within the mist came the sounds of drums and gongs.
"This is truly unsettling; there are so many rules in the Underworld," I couldn't help but mutter.
The Ghost Gate Sect Master heard me and turned to say, "This is just one way the Underworld welcomes us. Remember not to speak such words once we enter; after all, we are on their territory."
I nodded in response. After a moment, a Ghostly Envoy dressed in white with a long tongue emerged from the mist.
"You are from the Ghost Gate Cult, right?"
The Ghost Gate Sect Master nodded, and the Ghostly Envoy continued, "I am here to take you to the Underworld, my name is White Soul Reaper."
After saying that, we followed White Soul Reaper into the Underworld. As soon as we entered, we saw many ghosts flying above us.
"By the way, let me tell you something." Suddenly, White Soul Reaper walked over and stopped in front of me and Captain Wu.
Captain Wu and I exchanged glances, wondering what was going on with White Soul Reaper.
"You shouldn't make eye contact with these ghosts; otherwise, you'll get into trouble, and I won't be responsible for you," White Soul Reaper said before continuing on.
Captain Wu and I were puzzled. Could these ghosts really pose a threat to us?
"Be careful, because we are different, and the ghosts here are also different. They have been in the Underworld for years, absorbing the most intense Yin Qi from this place, gaining sentience. Since we practice Evil Arts, the combination of our dark energy can create a symbiotic relationship. You should understand what that means."
I nodded, and the Ghost Gate Sect Master turned around and sat on the Palanquin, leading the way in front of us.
"Little brother, what does the Ghost Gate Sect Master mean?" Captain Wu scratched his head.
"It's nothing; we just need to avoid looking at them and keep following," I replied.
As we traveled along, everything around us was eerily quiet. We hardly saw anything; it felt like a desolate dead city.
