Old Li ignored him and took a jar from the shelf.
He walked over to the Furnace, pouring the powder from the jar into a bottle. After sealing it, Old Li approached Wang Niu and said, "Pay close attention to how I do this; soon it will be your turn."
Wang Niu nodded, but just as he was about to speak, he noticed Old Li's expression change to something strange. "Do you remember what I told you the day before yesterday?" Old Li asked.
Wang Niu paused, looking at Old Li as memories of their previous conversation flooded his mind. Was Old Li growing impatient?
"I..." he started under Old Li's gaze.
"Well, it seems you haven't made up your mind," Old Li's face darkened instantly, leaving Wang Niu feeling awkward.
"That's not what I meant; I just—"
Wang Niu looked at Old Li helplessly. With a cold snort, Old Li said nothing more and placed the bottle on a nearby shelf before walking away.
Wang Niu stood there in shock; had he truly upset Old Li?
He glanced around, feeling an eerie atmosphere enveloping him. Even the sizzling sound from the Furnace seemed terrifying in his ears. Without thinking further, he hurried to leave, but just as he reached the door, he heard a commotion. Turning around, he saw that it was the staff from the Funeral Home pushing in a small cart, just like the one he had seen upon arrival.
Lying on the cart was a corpse.
He swallowed hard and was about to leave when one of the staff called out to him, "Where do you think you're going?"
Wang Niu froze for a moment, instinctively glancing around. He thought the staff member was speaking to someone else, but to his surprise, their gaze was fixed on him.
"It's you," the staff member pointed at him, leaving Wang Niu astonished. The staff member continued, "Come over here and help move the body inside."
Wang Niu hesitated in shock. Initially, he wanted to refuse, but feeling helpless, he followed the staff member and helped carry the corpse to a designated area inside.
The staff pointed to a large iron furnace in front of him and said, "You see that? It's the big iron furnace in front of you. You need to put the body inside, and then wait for it to be reduced to ashes before taking it out. Do you understand?"
Wang Niu wanted to explain that he wasn't from here, but the staff member walked away directly, leaving Wang Niu feeling quite awkward. His gaze shifted to the body resting on the shelf.
Did he really have to burn the body?
He swallowed hard. Although Old Li had taught him about this before, he didn't actually know how to burn a body. Old Li hadn't explained this step to him.
Wang Niu's scalp tingled with anxiety. He had no choice but to pick up the body and place it into the furnace. Just as he was about to put the body inside, suddenly, the main door swung open with a strange creaking sound, followed by a chilling gust of wind sweeping into the room.
Startled, he recalled Old Li's warning and quickly set the body down, rushing to close the door.
"That was close," he thought, breathing a sigh of relief. However, at that moment, something even more terrifying was quietly unfolding.
As he shut the door, he noticed that the body had vanished. He turned around and looked back, only to find that the body on the table was gone.
"What is going on?" he exclaimed in surprise.
How could the body just disappear?
Wang Niu began to panic, his eyes darting around in search of any trace of the body, but there was no sign of it anywhere.
His heart raced with mounting tension. Just then, something dripped onto his head. Wang Niu felt a liquid trickling down.
Thinking it was water leaking from the ceiling, he looked up and was met with a horrifying sight: the body was hanging upside down from the ceiling, its eyes wide open and staring at him. A wave of terror enveloped him completely.
He bolted out of there; clearly, something bizarre was happening.
However, before he could escape, the door slammed shut behind him.
He couldn't get out.
At that moment, the corpse slowly descended from above, inch by inch. The process was agonizingly slow, filling Wang Niu's heart with immense dread.
Suddenly, the corpse let out a terrifying sound.
Wang Niu felt as if his chest was about to explode. He quickly dodged to the side, but just then, the corpse began to rotate slowly, facing him step by step. Its eyes had been closed, but at that moment, they snapped open. He swallowed hard and locked eyes with the corpse once more.
"Gagaga, you will die, you will die!" the corpse suddenly shouted at him. In an instant, a fierce wind whipped up around them, turning the entire environment chaotic.
Everything fell in an instant; he could barely keep his footing.
Wang Niu's heart raced with fear as he watched the chaos unfold around him. His mind was in turmoil; he didn't know what to do. At that moment, the corpse had reached him and extended its hand toward his neck, gripping it tightly.
"Hah, your body belongs to me," the corpse uttered in a horrifying voice.
In just a moment, Wang Niu felt a suffocating sensation wash over him, nearly causing him to lose consciousness.
The corpse before him began to emit swirling black mist.
Then, a shadow appeared in front of him and suddenly rushed into his body.
"Ah!" The intense pain enveloped him instantly.
"Gagaga, soon your body will belong to me."
Wang Niu was engulfed in excruciating agony; it nearly drove him to madness. Before long, his consciousness began to fade, as if his body no longer belonged to him.
Just then, a surge of power suddenly coursed through him. In that moment, Wang Niu's awareness gradually returned, and the shadow that had invaded his body was expelled once more. Startled, he looked at the shadow before him and instinctively wanted to flee. But at that moment, Shadow moved with incredible speed and lunged back onto his body, seemingly intent on occupying it once again.
"Ha ha, you can't escape," Shadow re-entered his body, and his gaze turned to one of terror. If Shadow took over him, he would truly be finished.
"Boldness," a familiar voice reached his ears.
Wang Niu paused for a moment, feeling a flicker of joy. He recognized that voice; it was Ling'er. Sure enough, when he turned around, he saw Ling'er standing right in front of him.
"Ling'er, help me!" he called out anxiously.
Ling'er looked at Wang Niu with exasperation. This fool, couldn't he fight back?
She stepped forward and removed the shadow from Wang Niu, then swallowed it whole.
Wang Niu was startled and amazed. "You actually ate it?"
"What’s wrong? Isn’t that normal?" Ling'er replied with an expression that suggested she found it unremarkable.
"I—" Well, he couldn't understand.
Ling'er glanced around and suddenly looked puzzled. "What are you doing here?"
He explained to Ling'er that he had been assigned to work here.
"You work here?" Ling'er was surprised.
Wang Niu nodded, his gaze shifting to the corpse in front of him, which had returned to its original state.
This reassured Wang Niu, but he was also very confused. How did the corpse change back like that?
He asked Ling'er about it.
Ling'er's expression turned sharp as her gaze fell on the corpse. "Isn't it obvious? Someone must be trying to harm you."
Wang Niu was taken aback by Ling Er's words. Someone wanted to harm him—was it Old Li? But hadn't Old Li already left?
Seeing Wang Niu's dazed expression, Ling Er pulled him aside and asked, "Did you hear what I just said?"
Wang Niu nodded. At that moment, his mind was in turmoil. He couldn't understand why Old Li would want to harm him repeatedly.
Ling Er looked at Wang Niu, who seemed lost in thought, and nudged him. "What are you thinking about?"
Wang Niu snapped back to reality and replied, "I just find it strange. Why would he want to harm me? He was introduced to me by Uncle Chen."
Ling Er's eyes widened in confusion at his words. "You said Uncle Chen introduced him to you?"
Seeing Ling Er's surprised expression, Wang Niu nodded and asked, "Yeah, what's wrong? Why do you look so shocked?"
Ling Er's face grew even more perplexed as her tone turned urgent. "Quickly tell me, what is the name of the Uncle Chen you mentioned?"
Wang Niu paused, looking stunned. He sensed something was off with Ling Er; why did she react so strongly upon hearing Uncle Chen's name?
Moreover, he didn't know Uncle Chen's full name; he only knew him as Uncle Chen.
"Come on, just say it," Ling Er urged.
Wang Niu pouted and replied, "I don't know Uncle Chen's name. I've been with him since I was little, but I never learned his full name."
Upon hearing Wang Niu's response, Ling Er instantly deflated like a punctured balloon.
"What's wrong?"
Wang Niu was puzzled; why did he feel that Ling Er's expression resembled that of a beggar?
"Quick, tell me what Uncle Chen looks like," he urged.
Seeing Ling Er's anxious demeanor, he began to describe Uncle Chen, his gaze fixed on the expression on Ling Er's face. After he finished describing Uncle Chen, Ling Er seemed frozen in place.
"Ling Er, what's wrong?" He looked at her with growing concern.
"Didn't Uncle Chen give you a letter to pass to Old Li? What happened to that letter?" Ling Er asked Wang Niu.
Wang Niu was taken aback for a moment and nodded at Ling Er, but the letter had already been taken by Old Li.
"What’s wrong?"
"The letter is no longer in my possession; Old Li took it."
Upon hearing this, Ling Er's expression changed dramatically as if she were deep in thought. Wang Niu didn’t interrupt her; he waited until she regained her composure before speaking again. "What’s going on? Is there something serious?"
Ling Er looked at Wang Niu and nodded. "Yes, I suspect that the Old Li you encountered is not the real Old Li."
Wang Niu was taken aback by her words. "What did you say?"
Ling Er's expression turned particularly serious as she said to Wang Niu, "I mean that the Old Li you met might be an imposter."
Wang Niu was astonished once more. "Are you serious?"
Ling Er nodded earnestly and then explained, "Do you know who Uncle Chen really is?"
Wang Niu shook his head. Although he had lived with Uncle Chen for many years, he still didn’t know much about him.
"What kind of person?"
"Uncle Chen is a very powerful ghost catcher, well-known among many people," Ling Er said to him.
"A ghost catcher?"
Wang Niu was quite surprised; he was unfamiliar with this title.
"What did you say?" Ling Er's words sparked a significant reaction in his heart.
"It’s because of this identity that I think the one you encountered is a fake Old Li, and the real Old Li might be in trouble."
Wang Niu froze for a moment. Ling Er looked at him and said, "You should go back and ask Uncle Chen. This could be a good thing for you; someone might have transferred their hatred for Uncle Chen onto you. Besides, you can't stay in these places any longer."
