I pulled Xiao Nan behind me and said, "Quickly stand with your master."
Xiao Nan seemed to awaken from a dream, hurriedly responding and retreating to the back.
The Mud Man quietly said to me, "Old Sun, you should go to the back too."
I looked at the Mud Man in surprise. He continued, "You're injured so badly; don't drag me down."
"I won't," I tightened my grip on the knife. As soon as I finished speaking, the Faceless Female Corpse was already approaching.
Black Glasses stepped forward, his knife slicing down, leaving another wound on the Faceless Female Corpse, black blood gushing out. Just as I was astonished by Black Glasses' skill, unexpectedly, he let out a muffled groan and quickly stepped back, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.
I saw red blood staining the nails of the Faceless Female Corpse.
Black Glasses was injured; all of this happened in an instant. He pulled a handful of Glutinous Rice from his pocket and pressed it against his wound, wrapping it with a bandage while beads of sweat dripped from his face.
I asked, "Are you okay? Buddy."
He ignored me, wiped the sweat from his face, and pulled out a Black Donkey Hoof from his pocket. He seemed a bit angry and charged forward again. With a swift kick, he sent the Faceless Female Corpse stumbling back a few steps.
Seeing this, the Mud Man also rushed in, sweeping his leg and knocking the Faceless Female Corpse to the ground.
However, they underestimated the abilities of the Faceless Female Corpse. Just as the Mud Man was about to stab it with his dagger, he didn't expect the Faceless Female Corpse to be so fast. It grabbed his foot and yanked hard, causing him to lose his balance and fall to the ground. The Faceless Female Corpse opened its mouth to bite him.
At that moment, I charged forward and kicked the Faceless Female Corpse in the chin. It let out a piercing scream and got back up, charging at me.
I turned and ran. After a few steps, there was no sound behind me. Turning back, I saw Black Glasses locking onto the head of the Faceless Female Corpse.
The Faceless Female Corpse struggled violently, her already grotesque face twisting further, sending chills down the spine of anyone who dared to look. The foul stench emanating from her made it even more unbearable to approach.
Black Glasses locked onto the Faceless Female Corpse and pulled hard, causing her to crash to the ground.
However, it was clear that Black Glasses couldn't hold on for much longer.
He shifted his position, pressing his knee against the corpse's chest while using one hand to prepare the Black Donkey Hoof to shove into her mouth.
I rushed over to lend him a hand.
At that moment, the Mud Man also got back up. The three of us—Mud Man holding her hands down while I pinned her feet—managed to restrain the Faceless Female Corpse. Black Glasses pushed the Black Donkey Hoof toward her mouth, and slowly, the Faceless Female Corpse stopped struggling.
We all sighed in relief and gradually stood up, moving closer to Old Mountain Master.
Suddenly, I noticed a bulging vertical eye emerging from the corpse's face. I was so startled that I gasped, calling out to the Mud Man, who turned pale with fear.
Even Black Glasses froze in shock.
The three of us stood around the Faceless Female Corpse.
But Black Glasses quickly regained his composure, pulling out a knife and swiftly stabbing it into the vertical eye. A jet of black blood erupted forth, and he immediately covered it with his hand.
The Faceless Female Corpse seemed to return to a state of stillness.
Once Black Glasses stood up, his hand began to rot at an alarming rate. He hurriedly wiped it with Glutinous Rice repeatedly, but nothing could stop the decay of his skin.
Black Glasses let out a muffled groan as beads of sweat trickled down his forehead like pearls.
He repeatedly smeared the dark yellow Glutinous Rice on his hands, feeling helpless. Soon, he dashed towards the direction of Old Mountain Master.
Old Mountain Master took out the wine he had been drinking to clean Black Glasses's wounds, then pulled out some medicinal powder and sprinkled it on Black Glasses's hand, causing him to cry out in pain.
His entire hand was a mangled mess, with white bones protruding from the flesh.
After wrapping it up with a cloth strip, Old Mountain Master finally made Black Glasses look a bit better.
Once Old Mountain Master finished all this, he turned back to continue watching Ebony Coffin. I glanced at Faceless Female Corpse again, feeling uneasy, but thankfully it hadn’t changed.
The group of wild cats huddled in a corner, making soft cooing sounds.
At that moment, I finally spoke up, “Why do their sounds resemble cooing?”
The Mud Man replied, “All the tongues of these wild cats have been cut off.”
Hearing this made me feel uncomfortable; if it was done by someone, the method was extremely cruel—simply insane.
After the Faceless Female Corpse fell to the ground, the wild cats scattered but quickly regrouped in front of us.
They bared their fangs and glared at us viciously.
The sympathy I had felt for them moments ago was swiftly extinguished.
Our situation was dire; Black Glasses had suffered life-threatening injuries, I was covered in wounds, and Fat Ma had fainted on the ground. The best off among us was probably the Mud Man.
At that moment, a Cold Firework landed on the ground, its bright white light illuminating the entire tomb chamber. The Wildcats, startled by the intense brightness, scurried away and hid beneath the coffin to escape the light.
For creatures that had lived in darkness for so long, such strong light could be deadly.
I felt a wave of relief wash over me as I slumped down onto the ground, thinking to myself that we were finally safe.
I checked Fat Ma's breathing; fortunately, it was steady.
A hint of red appeared on the clay figure's face, indicating he too had relaxed considerably.
Old Mountain Master was mumbling something under his breath, though I couldn't make out what he was saying. Suddenly, I recalled how strange he had looked earlier; now he seemed normal again. Had I been mistaken? I pondered quietly to myself.
The earlier Cold Firework had been set off by Xiao Nan. The gurgling sounds gradually faded away.
After a while, Fat Ma woke up and immediately asked, "Fat Master, what happened to me?"
I replied, "You almost went to meet Yama."
Fat Ma scoffed and said, "Yama dares to meet me? Just wait until I deal with him."
I couldn't help but laugh at his bravado. Fat Ma rolled over and grinned at Xiao Nan, saying, "Come on, pour me a drink."
This time, Xiao Nan didn't refuse the hefty man and handed the bottle to Fat Ma. He took a hearty swig.
Xiao Nan grew anxious and quickly snatched it back, saying, " Fat Ma, don't drink so much."
Fat Ma chuckled and replied, "Just one more sip."
A fleeting thought crossed my mind, but I quickly dismissed it.
Fat Ma stood up and checked himself over. Everything was in place; not a single item was missing. His expression softened as he started to chat with me, but then his gaze fell upon the ground, where a cluster of wild cat corpses lay alongside the Faceless Female Corpse, riddled with stab wounds.
Fat Ma asked in astonishment, "Old Sun, what just happened?"
I recounted the events briefly.
"You mean the Faceless Female Corpse turned into a Zombie?" Fat Ma inquired.
I nodded gravely. Fat Ma circled around me and the clay figure.
The clay figure awkwardly said, " Fat Ma, what are you looking at?"
Fat Ma chuckled, "I'm just checking if you two are missing any parts. If you are, Fat Master will avenge you."
The clay figure cursed at Fat Ma, calling him a backseat driver.
Fat Ma immediately retorted, "If I hadn't been ambushed, taking care of that Female Zongzi would have been a piece of cake."
The clay figure didn’t respond. Fat Ma muttered a few more words before falling silent. At that moment, everything began to calm down. We all sat down to rest, regain our energy, and tend to our wounds.
This time, I was finally wrapped up like a mummy.
During the rest period, I pondered many questions. Finding this tomb had been an unintentional act, but it was more likely that someone had led us here.
As of now, we still hadn’t gained any clues regarding our purpose for coming here.
"Hills, Hills," I murmured to myself as I suddenly recalled that photograph. I took it out of my backpack and examined it closely.
It was clearly an ID photo. In the picture, Hills looked unchanged, still resembling her appearance from the time in Northwest. However, I guessed that the photo must have been taken after she returned to the city.
I stared at the photo, lost in thought.
Fat Ma leaned in with her chubby face, grinning lewdly. "Missing her, huh? I told you to make your move earlier, but you didn't listen to me. Now you're regretting it!"
I ignored Fat Ma. When she had urged me back then, I hadn't felt that way at all; I just thought she was a bit strange.
But now... I suddenly wondered why Hills had been dragged into this. Could it be because of me?
I quickly dismissed that thought. Back then, Hills had left several years before both Fat Ma and me. We hadn't been in contact for years; how could it possibly be because of me?
Another thought crossed my mind: could it be something about Hills herself? This led me to recall the strange dreams I had experienced over the years and what happened last time at Min River and the Underwater Tomb.
Just as I was pondering this, Xiao Nan suddenly shouted.
I turned around immediately and saw Old Mountain Master crawling into the Ebony Coffin.
Black Glasses got up and stepped forward to grab Old Mountain Master.
Old Mountain Master clung to the edge of the coffin and abruptly turned his head. Black Glasses instantly let go and took a few steps back.
