I felt a sense of unease within me, as I had already encountered the Zombie twice before, and I feared this time would be no different. However, when the Mud Man and I opened the Coffin Lid, we found it completely empty—nothing inside.
I quickly glanced at the pile of white bones on the ground and then back at the coffin; there had to be a connection between the two. A shiver ran down my spine, though I couldn't quite understand why.
"It's fine now, let's go up," he said.
"Okay," I replied.
" Fat Ma is missing," I suddenly remembered.
"Then the Fat Ma is above," upon hearing this, I felt my scalp tingle with dread.
"You mean Fat Ma is up there?" I questioned incredulously.
"Yes," the Mud Man nodded affirmatively.
"No, I clearly heard his voice just now."
The Mud Man looked at me with confusion but said nothing.
After a few moments of silence, I had no choice but to accept this unsettling reality. Gripping the rope, I began to climb up, but when I saw that it was the Mud Man pulling me up, I was taken aback once more.
"How is it you?" I exclaimed in surprise. My mind was completely in disarray at that moment.
The Mud Man helped me up. "Are you okay, Old Sun?"
"Were you down there just now?" After saying this, I peered back into the hole, but the Mud Man was nowhere to be seen.
"No!" the Mud Man replied. I shifted my gaze to the others, and Zhang Tong spat out, "He's been here all along."
"What about Fat Ma?" I asked.
"Didn't you find Fat Ma?"
"No."
The Mud Man's expression changed. He seemed ready to grab the rope and go down, but I stopped him. "The fat guy isn't down there."
"Did you see me just now?"
I nodded firmly, feeling a bit unwell.
"Were you scared by something?"
I shook my head, then nodded again. My mind felt muddled, and the more I tried to think, the more chaotic it became. The Mud Man didn't look too good either, and the others wore expressions of surprise. I had mentioned seeing the Mud Man below, while they had all been with him. It was baffling for them, just as it was for me.
I cradled my head in my hands, feeling some pain.
Fat Ma and that person were still missing; chaos was the only word that could accurately describe the situation.
"You should rest for a bit; don't think too much," Zhang Tong said as he approached me.
After some time passed, suddenly, Residual Anger, who had been holding onto the rope, stumbled toward the cave entrance under the strain. The Mud Man quickly grabbed Residual Anger's hand, and then Zhang Tong and another person joined in.
Both sides were at a standstill.
With no other choice, I got up, and we pulled the rope up a bit. But someone was losing strength. "Why don't we just let go?" someone suggested.
We were unclear about what we were trying to pull up, just as the proposal was about to gain approval.
Suddenly, a voice shouted from below, "Damn it, it's me."
If I couldn't recognize that voice, it would be strange.
We began to pull with all our might, and when Fat Ma was almost at the opening, I stepped forward to help and dragged the person off his back.
Fat Ma climbed up, panting heavily. "Quick, help him with his wounds; he has a broken arm."
Fat Ma looked disheveled, his arms covered in scratches.
I glanced at the person who was groaning in pain, his arm hanging limply, and recalled our earlier conversation. So I asked, "Fatty, did you fall down there?"
"Old Sun, that's not even a question. Luckily you guys threw a rope down; otherwise, I wouldn't have made it back to see you. I almost ended up separated from you all," Fat Ma said emotionally, nearly on the verge of tears.
However, my mind was elsewhere.
I was still stuck on what had just happened; it felt too eerie. What exactly had I encountered?
Seeing that I was out of sorts, Fat Ma waved his hand in front of my face. "You okay?"
I felt a bit dazed but shook my head to indicate that I was fine.
Fat Ma looked frustrated and muttered, "What a damn misfortune to fall into a trap. Luckily Fat Master has a strong fate and great skills; I managed to carve out a bloody path to escape."
"What was down there?" I interrupted Fat Ma.
He paused for a moment before replying, "Nothing at all—just a stone chamber."
After receiving the answer from the Fat Ma, I became increasingly certain that I had just experienced a hallucination.
"Old Sun, you seem a bit out of it. Are you okay?" Fat Ma asked again.
I'm fine. I tried hard to calm myself down; either I had bumped into a ghost or I had imagined it.
At this point, the man's wound had been bandaged, and his name was Huang Lin.
"Are you really okay?" Fat Ma asked again, still not reassured.
I nodded.
Only then did Fat Ma relax. "I don't know which idiot dug such a deep hole, causing me to..." He trailed off as he lit a cigarette.
The smoke curled around us, appearing strangely enchanting and eerie in the light. As the smoke slowly dispersed, I couldn't help but glance at everyone. After pinching myself, I still saw them in my line of sight and mentally reassured myself: it should be fine now. I steadied my nerves.
"Let's take a break before we head out again!" The Mud Man suggested. He had heard my conversation with Fat Ma earlier but chose not to interject, merely giving me a meaningful glance.
We sat down next to the dark opening and took a rest. I lit a cigarette as well, and after extinguishing the butt, we all resumed our journey forward.
Suddenly, laughter echoed in my ears. I turned around sharply, and a ghostly face appeared before me. I froze for a moment, and after a second, realized that the ghostly face was in the distance.
I wiped my face and touched my forehead; it felt hot to the touch. I quickly pulled my hand away, but when I touched it again, the burning sensation had vanished.
It's fine, I kept telling myself internally. Then I took a sip of water, feeling much calmer.
After walking for a while, the tomb passage turned again, revealing an imposing grand door before us—one made of wood with intricate carvings all over it.
Two bronze door knockers were fastened to the heads of two bronze lions.
The door stood tall, about three meters high and two meters wide, and the tomb passage was certainly wider than that. We walked towards the grand entrance.
The light shone upon it, revealing a certain luster. The wood used for this door must be of exceptional quality!
Fat Ma quickened his pace slightly. However, the sturdiness of the wooden door exceeded his expectations. It wasn't locked from the outside, which meant it had been bolted shut from within.
Fat Ma slammed against it several times, but to little effect.
"Stop banging on it, Fatty," the clay figure reminded him.
Fat Ma's face showed his reluctance. Behind such a luxurious door, there must be something valuable hidden away; that was what he thought.
Zhang Tong's eyes also sparkled with interest. It was clear that this door held significant cultural relics.
"We have to get it open," Fat Ma declared resolutely.
"Old Sun, what are you waiting for? Come over and help us figure this out."
I stepped forward, moving closer to the door.
