“Old Ghost”
Fat Ma looked at me with a suspicious gaze and explained, “Although this guy isn’t the best in terms of character, he has one skill that none of us possess.”
“What is it?”
Fat Ma furrowed his brows and said, “Old Ghost knows about Feng Shui.”
When it comes to Feng Shui, it's not something just anyone can learn because it's too mysterious, much like fortune-telling. Imagine a blind fortune-teller on the street calling out to you, “Brother, you have a blood disaster coming.” Would you believe it or not? Of course, some people don’t believe, but there are plenty who do.
So, Feng Shui isn’t that different in this regard. The person who knows it might be similar to a blind fortune-teller, and unfortunately, we are among those who believe.
After saying this, the Fat Ma slipped out the door.
I called out from outside, “Where are you going now?”
As he closed the door, I heard his voice say, “This Old Ghost must be in this place.”
In the meantime, I shared a few drinks with the clay figurine.
Soon, a commotion erupted outside: “Don’t pull me! I just bought this outfit! Hey, no matter what you say, Fat Ma, let go of me; I can walk by myself.”
The Fat Ma completely ignored him and dragged him into our private room. As soon as the door closed, the onlookers dispersed, and the restaurant returned to its usual scene—people eating and drinking.
“Can I let go now?”
Fat Ma released his grip. Old Ghost straightened his clothes and smoothed back his hair. After coughing twice to clear his throat, he said, “ Fat Ma, why did you bring me here?” He attempted to squeeze past towards the door, but the Fat Ma blocked his way.
"Is there still a Rule of Law?"
The Fat Ma glared at Old Ghost, his face full of flesh: "Rule of Law..."
Old Ghost's expression froze. He was about to say that they should talk things over, but the words hadn't left his mouth yet.
The Fat Ma's face twisted with laughter. "Of course there's a Rule of Law, Old Ghost brother. The government is the Rule of Law, and I am just a law-abiding citizen."
Watching the Fat Ma's grin, Old Ghost's previously serious gaze began to soften. His adrenaline surged, and his temper flared again as he cursed a few times.
"Old Sun, you clay figurine, what are you still dawdling for? Quickly make some space for Old Ghost."
Seeing that we hadn't moved, the Fat Ma gestured vigorously at us. Eventually, Old Sun stood up and made room for Old Ghost, while another colleague brought in an extra chair.
Once Old Ghost sat down, he felt more confident and wore an unhappy expression. " Fat Ma, are you throwing a banquet to trap me today?"
After sitting down, the Fat Ma didn't speak right away but urged his colleague to hurry and bring out all the dishes. The colleague complied and closed the door behind him.
"Is it time to get to the point?" Old Ghost said irritably.
The Fat Ma politely poured a glass of wine for Old Ghost, still wearing a smile on his face. "Here, let's have a drink first."
"If you don't speak, I won't drink. Who knows if you've spiked it?"
As soon as those words hit the air, the smile on Fat Ma's face froze. He immediately slammed the table and jumped up, shouting, "Old Ghost, I'm here to help you make money, not to see your sour face."
This sudden outburst startled me, and naturally, Old Ghost felt uneasy inside and chose to remain silent.
The Fat Ma knew when to stop, having mastered this technique quite well. Seeing Old Ghost startled, he seized the moment to say, "Brother Old Ghost, we both know each other well; we grew up wearing the same pair of shorts."
Old Ghost remained silent, acting like a closed book.
The Fat Ma didn't mind and continued talking.
At that moment, a waiter came in from outside. The Fat Ma fell silent and waited until all the dishes were served. Then he said, "Brother Old Ghost, this is a golden opportunity for us. After this, you won't have to do this kind of errand work anymore."
Old Ghost listened to the Fat Ma's serious tone but still seemed a bit skeptical. In the end, after much persuasion from the Fat Ma, Old Ghost still turned to me for confirmation.
I nodded. "Absolutely true."
Seeing that his words had not made much impact despite his efforts, the Fat Ma felt a bit displeased. However, Old Ghost finally agreed, and the Fat Ma let out a sigh of relief.
It seemed they had successfully found a teammate. After a feast of food and drink, they parted ways.
Old Ghost left ahead of us. The Fat Ma ordered another round of dishes, and we ate again before calling it a night. When we returned to his shop, the streets were quiet under the moonlight; tomorrow promised to be a sunny day.
After a good night's sleep, we spent the next few days preparing for our expedition. On the fifteenth day, just as it was about to expire, we received a phone call from Professor Sun, who provided us with an address that even he wasn't entirely sure about.
