I barely dodged past the clay figure at the same time, as a shadow nimbly weaved around us, swiftly grabbing hold of a beam in the corridor and disappearing like a monkey.
Before we could even get a good look, the shadow was gone.
"Damn it, if I had a machine gun, I'd take him down for sure," Fat Ma said angrily.
Old Ghost got up from the ground, dusting himself off, and said to Fat Ma, "But you don't have a gun, do you?"
"Old Ghost, stop giving me that cold comfort! I'm in a bad mood, and if you're not careful, I'll take it out on you too."
"Fat Ma, if you're trying to intimidate me, I'm here to make money, not to take your crap," Old Ghost shouted back.
Fat Ma wasn't one to back down easily; he immediately rolled up his sleeves. Seeing this, Old Ghost hurriedly dodged and yelled, "Fat Ma, you're nothing but a bandit. Comrade Sun, you tell him!"
I didn't want them to escalate the situation further, so I quickly intervened with Fat Ma: "Right now, we're all in the same boat; let's not stir up trouble among ourselves."
Fat Ma halted in his tracks while Old Ghost stood behind me with an equally defiant expression. The two glared at each other, neither willing to back down.
"Old Ghost, if it weren't for Old Sun today, I'd have dealt with you already."
"Fat Ma, don't think everyone is afraid of you; I’m not scared of you at all."
Fat Ma nearly lost his temper again.
"Let's get down to business."
This statement brought everyone back to their senses.
"Be careful; that thing is highly toxic," Mud Man suddenly said.
Everyone was momentarily taken aback.
Then Mud Man added, "It's better to be alive than dead."
The three of us felt as if a bucket of cold water had been thrown over us, and we instantly became more alert.
Fat Ma and Old Ghost stopped their verbal sparring.
"This corridor has no treasures, and with that ghostly thing around, we should leave this cursed place as soon as possible," Fat Ma said.
"You're right," Old Ghost instinctively replied.
After saying that, the two of them clashed like ice and fire for a moment before falling back into their cold war state.
We all agreed with Fat Ma's suggestion. This corridor was strange; I nearly lost my life here. It was best to leave this place of troubles. Although I was still curious about that shadowy figure, my life was far more important.
As we prepared to leave, I took a quick look around the corridor. Finding nothing else of value, we wasted no time and quickly retreated.
At that moment, the other five members of the team had also finished their observations.
The obstacles in this space can completely isolate people from one another.
When we came down, there were ten of us, but now only nine remained. After gathering again, everyone seemed disinterested, as if none had gained any significant advantage.
"Let’s notify them to come down."
No one voiced any objections, so someone fired a signal flare. The flare burst into a variety of colors, and soon the Pit above lit up with Flame, indicating that they had received the message. Before long, someone descended to the ground.
Quickly, Fish Head Elder and Zhang Tong arrived, along with that mysterious figure.
When he landed on the ground, I felt an unexpected sense of tranquility wash over me—a calmness that seemed to resonate from within. It was truly a peculiar sensation.
"Old Sun, what are you dawdling for?"
A remark from Fat Ma jolted me back to reality.
Given the current situation, it appeared that this space held nothing beneficial for us. If we weren’t careful, we could lose our lives.
Although I hadn’t explored every corner of this space, surely with so many people investigating, they must have covered most of it.
After briefly summarizing the situation,
everyone fell into deep thought.
I made a point to reiterate my concerns about that strange shadow, urging them to be vigilant.
A searchlight was quickly raised, its intense beam illuminating a large portion of the space, bringing it clearly into our view. The fragmented scenery that had previously surrounded us was now connected by this powerful light, forming a cohesive whole.
Everyone was momentarily stunned as we gathered in a relatively open area of this space, gazing at the scene before us. The remnants of beauty here could no longer be concealed; the chipped colors had faded, yet under the strong illumination, an unexpectedly striking effect emerged.
Fat Ma suddenly perked up, as Old Ghost was closest to him.
Fat Ma couldn't help but speak up, "Look! Is that Pearl up on the ceiling of the corridor?"
Upon hearing the name "Pearl," Old Ghost forgot their earlier displeasure and followed Fat Ma's pointing finger. Indeed, several pearls were embedded in the ceiling of the corridor.
"That's right," Old Ghost replied, his voice betraying his excitement.
"Let's go for it! What do you think?"
"That's a great idea." The two engaged in an enthusiastic discussion and prepared to take action. I understood their intentions and stepped in just as they were about to move.
"What are you two doing with so many people around?"
The murky expressions on their faces cleared up a bit. Fat Ma said, "Old Sun, you're right; we should act discreetly. Right, Old Ghost?"
Old Guo responded without a second thought, "Yes."
But in the next moment, they realized what they had just said and reverted to their previous antagonistic state, exchanging a few barbed remarks.
I looked at these two with curiosity; their earlier camaraderie had instantly turned into hostility. It seemed that only antiques could bring them together to such an intimate level!
At that moment, some people were already restless.
Soon, someone suggested that they should disperse to explore the area.
This space was indeed quite large, and it would be impossible to thoroughly investigate it with just a few people. Previously, the nine of us had only conducted a rough inspection.
The deceased person seemed like a gust of wind, a speck of dust—he had never existed at all. No one here cared about his life or death; he was dead, and that was that, as insignificant as an ant.
The mysterious figure glanced at the man without hesitation, and the crowd quickly dispersed like a tide, beginning their exploration of the space.
I teamed up with Old Ghost, Mud Man, Fat Ma, Fish Head Elder, Zhang Tong, and Old Wang.
Suddenly, I thought of Professor Sun again.
Taking advantage of the chaos as the crowd scattered, I blurted out my concern to Zhang Tong.
However, the result was still ignorance.
"That corridor is off-limits anyway," Fat Ma shouted, his tone filled with concern as he warned that there was a danger to life there and it wasn't worth the risk. He rambled on for quite a while. But I understood; it wasn't that the corridor lacked anything from before. It would be strange for Fat Ma to waste time in a place where nothing happened!
