Human Sacrifice
The Coiling Dragon, massive in size, was now ensnared by vines and a powerful current.
It struggled as the vines burrowed into the ground, attempting to bind the Coiling Dragon to the earth, while the rushing water pressed down on its head.
The Azure Cloud Disciples hurled their Iron Swords like shooting stars at the Coiling Dragon. The swords pierced through its fur, and in an instant, the Coiling Dragon was covered in blood and flesh.
With a thunderous roar, the Coiling Dragon whipped its tail, snapping the vines apart. The Iron Swords embedded in its body flew off, and it was impossible to tell how many Azure Cloud Sect disciples were impaled by them. The Coiling Dragon roared in fury and bit through the current, its eyes as large as the full moon as it lunged toward Water Master Liang Yu.
Liang Yu had to interrupt his Water Manipulation technique and retreated swiftly. The path of the Coiling Dragon crushed countless people beneath it. Though it measured over a hundred meters long, it moved with incredible speed, leaving those who wished to escape powerless.
"The Coiling Dragon cannot be dealt with by human strength; I must retreat," Liang Yu declared as he dashed toward the river in the center of the area. He walked on the surface of the water as if it were solid ground, his white robe enveloping him completely, not a drop of water touching it.
The Coiling Dragon lunged at Liang Yu, who suddenly sank beneath the river's surface. As soon as the dragon's head touched the water's surface, it emitted a hissing sound, akin to a red-hot iron being plunged into cold water.
The pain in the Coiling Dragon's eyes sharpened its pupils. It flipped over and charged into the crowd. Someone shouted, "The Coiling Dragon fears water! We should all jump in!"
In an instant, most people rushed toward the river, but many could not swim and could not hold their breath for long underwater.
The Coiling Dragon surged into the crowd, killing countless individuals and instilling terror. As it became clear that no one remained on shore, Ma Yuan, Wang Xing, Xiao Yan, and a group of the top hundred Outer Sect members all jumped into the river.
Only I remained standing on the bank. Strangely enough, throughout all this chaos, the Coiling Dragon completely ignored me, not casting a single glance in my direction.
The Coiling Dragon consumed the souls and Dao Qi of those it had slain. It lingered by the riverbank as Azure Cloud Disciples surfaced from below, gasping for air.
"Master, who is that person? Why isn't the Coiling Dragon killing him?" an elder from Serpent Cult suddenly pointed at me.
"Hmm?" The Serpent Body Sect Leader turned to look at me standing not far from the Coiling Dragon. "This is impossible. Could he be a snake tamer or a beast master? No, even a beast master couldn't instill a sense of belonging in the Coiling Dragon. There's something strange about this child; capture him."
From afar, I saw an Elder of the Divine Serpent Sect gliding down from Mountain Valley before jumping into the water. In that shimmering light on the surface of the water, I vaguely saw a figure standing above it without sinking. The Coiling Dragon roared at this person, who stepped back cautiously before ultimately leaving the surface.
Underwater, many people held their breath and swam away in search of a safe place to breathe.
Suddenly, a peculiar voice echoed in my mind: "You have been observing me closely; even above, the Coiling Dragon has not harmed you. Who exactly are you?"
A White Shadow appeared before me. Liang Yu's lips did not move, yet his voice resonated within my mind. I was at a loss for how to respond.
Suddenly, Liang Yu charged towards me at lightning speed. Before I could react, he landed a punch on my chest, forcing the air out of my lungs and nearly choking me.
Liang Yu attacked again. My fist was enveloped in a layer of earthy yellow light as I struck forward with all my might. The water rippled violently, creating a loud crash and stirring up a whirlpool. Liang Yu easily dodged it, but the two disciples from the Azure Cloud Sect behind him were not so fortunate; they were swept into the whirlpool by a strong current and crashed against the rocks by the riverbank, losing consciousness.
I pressed against the riverbank and kicked off to surface, gasping for air. My chest throbbed painfully, and before I could climb ashore, a tremendous force suddenly dragged me back into the water.
Water Master Liang Yu belonged to the Water element among the five elements: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. Of all these elements, water was considered the least useful unless it mutated into ice. Even after a hundred years of cultivation, one would struggle to become a master. However, this Water Master Liang Yu was an exception; it was rumored that his water affinity had reached its peak. Once he entered the water, he became the king of water, capable of even breathing underwater.
As Liang Yu pulled me beneath the surface, I indeed saw gill-like flaps moving on his face, expelling water. If I guessed correctly, Liang Yu either practiced some dark technique or had an unusual birth.
I often heard tales of Water Lions, Water Monkeys, and even Kappa mating with humans. Anyone resembling a human would inevitably be psychologically twisted.
Humans are primates; everyone longs to be unique but only in terms of achievements. If one's body differs from others, it often leads to immense feelings of inferiority.
Liang Yu kicked his legs and forcefully dragged me deeper into the water. His expression was fierce as he thought in my mind: "Dare to show hostility towards me? Then I'll play with you."
I reached for the Silver Thread at my waist, which I had taken from the Puppet Master earlier. The Silver Thread was incredibly sharp—sharper than any blade. Although I had studied the Puppet Technique through the Martial Dao Classic and couldn't master it completely, I could at least wield the Silver Thread's power.
The Silver Thread moved through the water almost unimpeded as it wrapped around Liang Yu's neck. He was startled and asked, "You are a Puppet Master?"
At that moment, I still wore my mask and hadn't removed it. Liang Yu dodged the Silver Thread and attempted to pull off my mask. I subtly moved my fingers as the Silver Thread wrapped around his leg. Liang Yu screamed in pain as my Silver Thread dug into his flesh. He turned to free himself from it but ended up cutting his palm in the process.
He drew a scimitar from his waist and began slashing wildly around him. With a swift sound, the Silver Thread was severed. Seizing the opportunity, I surfaced for a few breaths before diving back into the river.
I saw Liang Yu swimming towards a glowing cave underwater while several agile disciples followed suit. At that moment, Ma Yuan and Wang Xing were nowhere to be seen; neither was Xiao Yan. I followed everyone into the cave and swam for a while in its light before seeing them surface.
Once there was no movement above, I emerged from the water. This place turned out to be an artificially constructed underground passageway. Oil troughs lined both sides of the passageway—a design typically found in large ancient tombs predating the Qing Dynasty. How could such an underground structure exist deep within Herb Valley?
I trailed behind everyone at a distance and noticed they were all silent with fear. Leading them were Ma Yuan, Wang Xing, and Xiao Yan; injured Liang Yu brought up the rear.
He occasionally glanced back nervously as if afraid I would pursue him.
The passageway wasn't very long; along our path lay many items resembling burial goods and some ancient warrior figurines—impossible to identify their dynasty just by looking at them.
Some disciples picked up ancient swords found along the passageway; although rusty, they were still usable.
Others discovered some bronze artifacts along the passageway. Even though Ma Yuan warned everyone not to touch or take anything from this underground structure, greedy disciples still hid items on themselves—hoping that if they stumbled upon an ancient treasure, their lives would change forever and their destinies no longer controlled by others.
The group followed Ma Yuan into a spacious hall. The architecture inside was ancient, and the oil in the surrounding troughs crackled as it burned.
One disciple remarked, "How many years must these oils have been here? They haven't dried up at all and ignite with just a spark."
Xiao Yan replied, "It's all human oil. They burn bodies in a furnace to extract the rendered fat, mixed with several special materials, allowing it to be preserved for a thousand years. This is how eternal lamps are made."
Everyone felt a chill run down their spines. The oil troughs they had seen along the way were all full. How many people must have been killed to fill all the oil troughs in this underground structure?
Suddenly, one disciple accidentally touched a piece of jade on the wall, and with a clang, the soldiers around the hall began to collapse one after another. Ma Yuan shouted angrily, "Don't touch anything in this underground structure! Are you looking for death?"
As soon as Ma Yuan's words fell, a series of mechanical sounds echoed from above the hall.
"This is bad!" Xiao Yan thought to himself as he tried to return the way they came. But suddenly, a stone door appeared from the wall. The group began to pound on the walls, confused about what was happening.
Above the hall, countless stone holes opened up, and arrows flew out in a flurry.
Xiao Yan and the other experts immediately grabbed swords from the fallen soldiers by the walls to fend off the rain of arrows. Moments later, over half of those inside the hall lay dead, leaving only a few dozen survivors, most of whom were among the top hundred experts of the Outer Sect.
After the arrow storm passed, everyone was stained with blood, and the blood of those who had been killed pooled together, flowing toward the center of the hall.
