In the Dunhuang Sand Pit, at the Golden Palace, the vibrant spring color murals surrounded three men who stood frozen in the pool, their smiles abruptly fading.
Huzi's golden goblet fell into the water with a sound reminiscent of a bubble, his fingers twisted in shock.
Wine spilled from Wu's open mouth as the three men remained motionless, staring at the grotesque beast, Qiongqi, standing twenty meters away, its body covered in blood and flesh.
Qiongqi bared its fangs, glaring fiercely at the three men in the pool, its murderous intent growing stronger.
Iron Bull picked up a heavy hammer from the edge of the pool and pounded it against his muscular chest. "Let's fight it out!"
Wu and Huzi exchanged glances and nodded. Iron Bull raised his hammer and shouted, but as he charged out of the pool, he noticed that his companions had not followed. Turning around, he saw Wu and Huzi desperately fleeing toward the palace exit, clutching their clothes.
Qiongqi leaped down from its perch and lunged at Iron Bull. With a powerful swing of his hammer, Iron Bull struck Qiongqi, causing it to stumble. Enraged, Qiongqi roared as Iron Bull turned and sprinted after Wu and Huzi.
Qiongqi's eyes blazed with fury as it bled from wounds inflicted by the Giant Black Rat. Instead of pursuing the trio, it dove into the Spiritual Spring Pool, submerging itself completely. The water quickly receded and turned a murky green, emitting a foul stench. When Qiongqi emerged, all its injuries had healed; its fur bristled as it unfurled a pair of leathery wings.
Having been trapped in the Dunhuang Caves for countless years, Qiongqi's combat prowess had diminished. However, after absorbing the spiritual energy from the spring, it became even stronger than before—its once emaciated form now robust and powerful, its eyes gleaming with vitality.
Qiongqi gazed at the cave entrance several dozen feet away and leaped forward with ghostly speed.
In the winding passageway, Huzi and his companions hastily donned their clothes and bolted outside as if they had seen a ghost, pursued by the looming shadow behind them.
Meanwhile, in a chamber within the eerie Underground Palace filled with Ghostly Energy, Zhang Dao'an, the eldest disciple of Longhu Mountain, led a handful of disciples through a relentless battle against countless zombies. These undead beings were either Taoists or monks—or ordinary people whose spirits had been tainted by malevolence after death and sealed here; their bodies had become shriveled and impervious to weapons.
Zhang Dao'an was a prominent disciple of Longhu Mountain; his ancestor was Zhang Daoling, the founder of Orthodox Daoism. The sect's masters had documented various secrets about mountains and rivers in their Daoist records. They possessed extensive knowledge of magical arts to subdue demons and monsters, which is why many followed Zhang Dao'an into battle.
However, nearly a thousand individuals had entered through the dark door chosen by Zhang Dao'an; now only a few dozen emerged from the Underground Palace, all severely injured.
The group feared that they would be trapped by the giant black rats blocking their escape while being relentlessly pursued by hordes of zombies—caught between two dire threats.
Terrifying squeaks echoed through the air as dread washed over them. Countless zombies surged forth from the darkness as Zhang Dao'an grew weary. He executed a sword technique to inscribe a Ghost Talisman in midair; when it detonated, it ignited a cluster of zombies that fell into the abyss below. The remaining disciples fought valiantly with their swords as their Dao Qi dwindled.
A sudden sound of sword ringing pierced through; countless rats blocking their exit were instantly slain. The sword light tore through space above them. Soon after, all corpses that had chased them out of the Underground Palace collapsed into heaps of bones.
The group turned to see an individual suddenly appear near the cave entrance. One exclaimed, "Is that Rain Master Sister Luo?!"
"Senior Sister Yu!" The crowd felt as if they had found salvation; having narrowly escaped to this point, they finally laid eyes on a true master.
"Where is the Arched Eyebrows person?" asked Rain Master Luo.
"In response to Senior Sister Yu, they should be in the first cave on the right after entering here. I saw Junior Sister Bai Xiaoxiang go in when I arrived," replied Zhang Dao'an.
Rain Master Luo nodded and turned to leave the cave.
Moments later, Rain Master Luo entered the cave that Zhang Dao'an mentioned, and from a distance, she could hear the sounds of fighting and screams coming from within.
Quickly, Rain Master Luo leaped toward the source of the noise. She found herself in a vast space filled with strange blood-red flowers that emitted a foul odor. Countless black beetles flew around, and the ground was littered with corpses that had been gnawed to pieces by the insects. The sounds of battle came from the center of these blood-red blooms, where a clearing was swarming with beetles, and a group of red-eyed individuals was engaged in combat with an Emei Disciple.
Holding her sword, Rain Master Luo charged into the battlefield. With a single stroke, she unleashed a wave of sword energy that cut down everyone rushing toward the Emei Disciple. Rain Master Luo landed in front of the Emei Disciple. As she sheathed her sword, the lingering sword energy echoed around them, causing heads to roll, including those of the beetles that were sliced in half and fell to the ground with a thud.
Turning around, Rain Master Luo looked at Bai Xiaoxiang, who appeared flustered, and the terrified Emei Disciples. "Is everyone alright?"
"Senior Sister!" The group recognized Rain Master Luo and began to cry. Bai Xiaoxiang grabbed Rain Master Luo's hand, tears streaming down her face. "Senior Sister, I knew you would be fine."
"This place is heavily infused with Yin Qi, and these flowers are poisonous. I will take you all out," Rain Master Luo said.
She turned and slashed her sword to break the illusion trapping them in the poisonous flower garden. As the illusion shattered, light poured in from beyond a hundred feet away.
At that moment, an Emei Female Disciple suddenly lunged at Rain Master Luo from behind with her sword.
Rain Master Luo's Dao Qi erupted, shattering the sword in the female disciple's hand. Bai Xiaoxiang swiftly pierced through the female disciple's heart. "She was bitten by a poisonous beetle; Dao Qi cannot purify the toxin. We've already tried."
The female disciple's eyes were bloodshot, her pupils red as well, revealing two bite marks on her neck where the beetles had struck.
"Everyone check each other for any bites from poisonous insects," Bai Xiaoxiang commanded.
The Emei Disciples anxiously examined one another, fearing they might have been bitten and would have to resort to suicide to avoid turning into monsters.
"Bai, Sister Bai, your arm..." one of the Emei Disciples pointed at Bai Xiaoxiang's right arm.
Bai Xiaoxiang looked at her arm and saw two dark puncture wounds; her entire arm was already filled with toxic blood.
Bai Xiaoxiang's complexion turned pale as she looked at Rain Master Luo. "Sister, it seems I'm not fit to be Arched Eyebrows' eldest disciple after all. You should come back."
Before Bai Xiaoxiang could finish speaking, she thrust her sword toward her heart. Rain Master Luo deflected Bai Xiaoxiang's blade and then pressed her finger against Bai Xiaoxiang's heart meridian. Suddenly, Dao Qi surged into Bai Xiaoxiang's body, causing her to spit out black blood.
"Rain Master Luo said, 'I have sealed your heart veins; you will be fine for the next three days. The poison from the insect is not too troublesome as it hasn't been refined yet. With Arched Eyebrows' methods, you should be able to detoxify. Support Bai Xiaoxiang back; the Emei Sect Leader and the elders are waiting for you above.'"
"Understood, Master Sister," everyone replied. When they looked up again, Rain Master Luo had already vanished.
A female disciple remarked, "When can we be as powerful as Senior Sister Yu, able to take fate into our own hands?"
"Don't even think about it in this lifetime. Senior Sister Yu is exceptional; she even mastered the Ancestor Master's One Sword Technique. Among her peers, she has no rivals. Even if we practiced for a hundred years, we wouldn't reach her level," another Emei Disciple said, her tone somber.
Bai Xiaoxiang responded, "You are all mistaken. Senior Sister's talent isn't actually that remarkable; she wouldn't rank among the best in any sect. You don't know what hardships Senior Sister Yu endured to master the One Sword Technique. I once cultivated with her; there was a time she practiced a single Sword Technique for three nights without sleep. To seize fate, one must first relinquish their own destiny. It's easy to say, but I can't do what she did. Senior Sister is too dedicated and too obsessed."
In the sand pit, surviving disciples from various sects emerged from the hidden doors. Some were bulging with treasures, having obtained secret manuals of Cultivation Methods or magical artifacts.
However, many others were battered and bruised, with broken bones and torn muscles. The survivors sought help from those standing at the edge of the sand pit as various sects lowered ropes to rescue their fallen disciples.
Suddenly, a beastly roar echoed through the air as three young men scrambled out of a hole—Wuzi, Huzi, and Iron Bull.
Behind them, a massive ferocious beast known as Qiongqi roared in fury. Those clinging to the ropes were terrified to see that Qiongqi was still alive and nearly fell off in shock.
