In the realm of Light Shadow, Yunxi called out to the White-Haired Elder, asking, "Senior, can a life be exchanged for another?"
The White-Haired Elder paused, turning to look at Yunxi. After a moment of hesitation, he replied, "Yunxi, every life is precious. Someone once asked me the same question. But let me ask you this: if you die and he lives, is the Purple Jade Pavilion worth it?"
"Can it be done or not?" Yunxi pressed.
The White-Haired Elder shook his head. "There is no method of exchanging lives, but the art of Revival does exist. The Daoists have the Reincarnation Technique, which nurtures the soul of the deceased and finds a suitable vessel. Many years later, through a Yin Marriage, they can transform Yin Qi into Yang Qi. However, this method is not suitable for the person in question; his soul has already become a Nascent Soul. Recklessly transferring it could lead to an even quicker death. There is another technique known as the Revival Technique, classified as the first taboo of the Daoist Sect. In ancient times, when a Daoist master died, there were dedicated practitioners who would cultivate the Revival Technique to help the deceased find a new body and live again. Yet, in the end, they all met tragic fates because they had to continuously kill to seize bodies. This ultimately led to a great war within the Daoist Sect, resulting in the destruction of the Revival Technique and its classification as a forbidden practice. There is also a technique called Life Exchange Technique; while it does not involve exchanging lives directly, it requires one to transfer their maximum life essence to another daily. The consequence is a significant reduction in one's lifespan and weakening of their body. Yang Hao is from the Daoist Sect and has touched upon the Way of Power. In this state, one is neither dead nor alive but continuously aging. If you are determined, you might try this method to prolong his life; however, I cannot guarantee its effectiveness and assure you that it will not endanger your life."
"I would appreciate it if you could teach me the Life Exchange Technique. If I ever need your help in the future, I will surely repay you," Yunxi said.
The White-Haired Elder nodded and imparted the Life Exchange Technique to Yunxi.
From that moment on, Yunxi would transfer her life essence to me while I lay unconscious on the bed. Countless times she would faint after just a few steps until one day I finally woke up again.
I looked at Yunxi's exhausted yet peaceful sleeping face and placed her cold hand on my cheek.
When Yunxi awoke for the second time, I had already prepared breakfast early in the morning. We exchanged smiles that felt like we had known each other for years yet also felt like our first meeting.
"By the way, Yunxi, where did Bubble go? Did she abandon me while I was unconscious?" I asked.
Yunxi replied, "She's still sleeping in the forbidden area's vein mine and hasn't woken up yet. She can sleep longer than you."
"With such heavy snow falling, she's still sleeping? Isn't she afraid of freezing to death?" I chuckled as I ate my noodles.
After finishing breakfast, Yunxi and I set off together toward the Dragon Vein Mine in the forbidden area. At the base of the snow-covered Dragon Vein Mine, spring was blooming vibrantly in the Holy Herb Garden. The Seven-Colored Bubble shielded against the wind and snow while a beast lay nestled in the snow's embrace. Surprisingly, it had grown immensely larger than before—like a cow—with its snowy white fur making it appear even more rotund, curled up almost like a ball. I had heard tales of a demon king with such an uncoordinated and unassuming physique.
On the beast's forehead was a mark resembling the character for "king," and its ears drooped lazily.
Just as I was about to descend, Yunxi stopped me, saying, "There are restrictions from the Demon King; be careful."
"It's fine."
I floated down, my fingers gently touching the bubbles surrounding the beast. As the bubbles burst, I called out, "Bubble, wake up!"
"Hmm?" The beast opened one eye and glanced at me lightly before jumping up and shouting, asking why it had changed.
I smiled and said, "You've grown bigger. From now on, I'll only be able to ride you; how will you sleep in my arms?"
Upon hearing this, the beast stood up straight, clenched its fists, and with a look of determination on its face, its body suddenly shrank back to its original form.
"Wow, that's impressive," I praised.
The beast puffed out its chest and huffed at me proudly, but then it frowned. It used its Divine Ability to look at my Qi Sea and saw a golden figure covered in cracks floating above it. Suddenly, it began to cry softly, reaching out to touch the wrinkles on my face and asking what was wrong.
I stroked the Beast Path and replied, "I'm fine, Bubble. I just sustained injuries due to restrictions. The Great Way is obstructed; perhaps I won't be able to accompany you into the depths anymore."
Wiping away its tears with big, innocent eyes, I continued, "Go see Sister Yunxi and bring her some Holy Medicine from the Holy Herb Garden that can extend life. If I'm not around in the future, you must listen to her."
The beast pouted with a look of grievance, its eyes reddening. It ran to the center of the Holy Herb Garden and tossed out a ginseng root that looked like a little doll with arms and legs. Clearly, it was a Ginseng Spirit that had lived for over a thousand years.
The beast gestured to me, indicating that this was the Holy Medicine King, one of the best Holy Medicines in the Holy Herb Garden. I signaled Yunxi to come down from the vein mine. When Yunxi landed beside me, I handed the Holy Medicine to her. She shook her head and said, "This is for treating your Injury of the Dao. Look at it, it seems so afraid that I might take it away."
"Indeed!" The beast nodded, pouting its lips.
"Look at you, we should take this Holy Medicine King together, right?" I said, patting the beast's head.
The beast nodded and settled on my shoulder, looking somewhat dejected. In the past, no matter how injured I was or how close to danger I became, the beast had never been this sad. The Injury of the Dao was a punishment from above, and as the king of beasts, it could naturally sense that terrifying power of rules, just like how even a powerful Ancient Beast could not resist its commands when it saw it.
To the Dao, humans were merely living beings within its jurisdiction. If a living being wished to become part of the Dao, it would inevitably clash with The Might of the Dao and face condemnation.
I coughed a few times, and Yunxi draped her warm coat over my shoulders. I picked up a broken branch from the ground, and with a surge of sword energy, I wrote two lines on the Dragon Vein's vein mine.
Earthly Unity Sealing, Destruction of the Eight Wildernesses, Three Lifetimes, Three Worlds, Never Apart.
The Sun and Moon, Mountains and Rivers Upside Down. I Become a Demon, Willing to Betray the World but Not You. I become a demon; I would rather bear the burden than betray you.
Yunxi looked at the two lines of Dao Qi inscribed on the cliff and chuckled softly. "I didn't expect you to write such poetry."
"Of course! After all, I'm The First Talented Scholar of Futu Ridge," I replied, my face slightly pale.
Three days later, Yunxi and I walked hand in hand out of Futu Ridge. I had set up restrictions there; ordinary people could not enter. The Dragon Vein Imperial Qi had been completely consumed by Yunxi, the beast, and me. Now it had become a desolate ridge, but this place had once been my home. Despite many regrets and resentments, there was still more reluctance to leave.
Yunxi and I had disappeared from the Daoist Sect for three months. During these three months, many significant events occurred. First, Longhu Mountain was destroyed by someone. Then the Serpent Cult and Yinshan Yang Family openly recruited disciples with generous conditions. People from the secular world and scattered practitioners from the Daoist Sect flocked to these two Supreme Sects to learn their arts. Whether it was due to Daoist Catastrophe or great chaos below, there were always too many dreamers wanting to rise above others in this world and make a name for themselves. This time Yu Xuanliang and Li Fugui did not intervene but allowed those from the Daoist Sect to promote themselves widely.
The various sects sensed a dangerous atmosphere, as several factions had been annihilated one after another. Some witnesses claimed to have seen the dead rise again as ghostly corpses, and there were rumors of large numbers of Yin Soldiers passing through, though no one knew where they ultimately went. Disappearances and deaths plagued the major sects.
The crisis surrounding the Book of Life and Death began to circulate once more, and this time, the target of public condemnation became the South Sea Wonderful Guanyin. Even amidst the chaos within the Daoist Sect, many were still inquiring about Miao Guanyin's whereabouts, holding her accountable.
At times, some long-established masters from the Daoist Sect would suddenly go mad, their eyes blood-red as if possessed, slaughtering their fellow disciples. Fear gripped everyone within the Daoist factions, while wandering cultivators were especially on edge, daring not to travel alone in desolate mountains and wilds.
During this period, May Day gained notoriety by killing an elder from the Yang Family who was at the Dao Fruit Realm and a Black Robe Guardian from the Serpent Cult. Yang Xuanzong and Nangong were furious; one pursued May Day from Yin Mountain to the Western Regions, while the other chased from the Western Regions to Dunhuang. In the end, May Day managed to escape.
Leiyin Temple was home to many powerful figures. Haideng and Haikong were both early-stage Mahayana Realm experts, while the Three Great Monks had reached full Mahayana Realm—just a step away from entering the Tribulation Realm and becoming Supreme Beings. Nangong dared not launch a reckless attack and could only leave in anger.
Each major sect had its own rising stars: Cao Shaogong from Sword Pavilion, Bai Xiaoxiang from Emei, Zhang Dao'an from Longhu Mountain, Dongfang Yuqing the Five Element Swordsman, Lou Shaoyu from Sea Viewing Pavilion, and a Daoist Couple from Zhongnan Mountain, among others.
In these three months, a mysterious organization emerged, led by someone known as the Dragon God.
Yunxi and I sat in a tavern in Jiangnan, eating while listening to discussions among past members of the Daoist Sect about these significant events.
