"Zhao Yang" finished speaking and called over "Zhang Fan," saying, "Go find out the names of those people from earlier and which disciple rooms they are staying in. I want a reply by noon tomorrow."
"Zhang Fan" was about to take his leave when "Scholar Xiu" stopped him. After a moment of contemplation, he said to "Zhao Yang," "The slightly plump one is called 'Wang Hu,' the shorter and thinner one is 'Zhang De,' the pale-faced one is 'Jiang Hao,' the tall one with a long face is 'Ma Qing,' the dark-skinned one is 'Zheng Yishi,' and the last one is 'Guo Yuan.' They are all among the strongest in the 'New Disciples,' so they are together with this generation's highest-ranked 'Outer Sect' disciple, 'Han Hai.' There's an unwritten rule in the 'Outer Sect' that only the strongest can stay in Room One for disciples, and after that, they are arranged in order. Except for the top ten disciple rooms occupied by those who haven't reached the 'Foundation Establishment Stage' from the previous generation, starting from Room Eleven, it’s 'Han Hai,' followed closely by these six."
Hearing "Scholar Xiu's" words, "Zhao Yang" smiled slightly, surprised that "Scholar Xiu" would voluntarily provide this information. He asked, "So, Scholar, which disciple room are you in?"
The scholar respectfully replied, "I am also at the seventh layer of 'Qi Refinement Stage.' I used to be close to them, so I stay in Room Eighteen right next to them."
"Scholar Xiu" felt somewhat anxious. He didn't understand why his cultivation at the seventh layer of "Qi Refinement Stage" was higher than those two before him, yet he felt a twinge of fear creeping into his heart, especially when facing "Zhao Yang." It was as if he were a timid little lamb standing before a colossal beast. Raised by his grandfather, a renowned fortune teller, he remembered his grandfather telling him that he had placed something within him and that he should always follow his instincts. So when faced with whether to follow "Han Hai" or stay with "Zhao Yang," he chose to remain. Not only because of that feeling but also because of his dream; it was "Zhao Yang" who had given him an opportunity to showcase himself before thousands of spectators.
"Long Xiao Wu" looked at "Zhao Yang" with confusion and asked, "Zhao Yang, could it be…"
"Zhao Yang" made a shushing gesture and then said to "Zhang Fan," "Take Scholar Xiu to the Fish Pond to fish."
Both "Scholar Xiu" and "Zhang Fan" looked out into the dark night and then turned back to "Zhao Yang," puzzled by the idea of fishing at such a late hour.
However, "Long Xiao Wu" was filled with amusement; finally, they could help this chatty scholar realize their initial plan. He patted "Scholar Xiu's" shoulder and laughed, saying, "Good job, Scholar! You made the right choice. Also, take these next two days to tidy up our place; it's been days since we washed our dirty clothes or aired out the blankets."
"Scholar Xiu" understood that "Zhao Yang" and "Long Xiao Wu" were retaliating for his earlier comments about them in front of everyone. His face flushed red as he spat out a single word through gritted teeth: “Fine!”
Both "Zhao Yang" and "Long Xiao Wu" burst into laughter. "Zhao Yang" said, “Starting a fire by the river can help attract fish; you two hurry along now.”
Watching as "Zhang Fan" and "Scholar Xiu" left, "Long Xiao Wu" finally turned serious and asked "Zhao Yang," “Why do we have to act secretly? We have at least a fifty percent chance of taking down all seven of them together!”
Zhao Yang shook his head and said, "A fifty percent chance of winning is also a fifty percent chance of losing. Moreover, their threat to us cannot be resolved just by knocking them down. If we lose, we will be killed; if we win, we will have defeated the strongest seven disciples of the Outer Sect, who are merely two Qi Refinement Stage three layers of trash. The trouble we would attract would be immense. However, if we do this secretly, no one will suspect us, and they definitely won't expect us to strike tonight after just giving us three days to consider."
"This... are we really going to act tonight and kill them?" Long Xiao Wu was surprised by Zhao Yang's decisiveness.
"What else can we do? They have pushed you to a dead end; if we don't fight back, what does that say? This is what they themselves said: survival of the fittest, strength is paramount."
On a dark night with a strong wind, it was a night for killing. Zhao Yang and Long Xiao Wu had already changed into stealthy outfits and were quietly approaching the disciples' quarters where Han Hai and the others were staying.
"Hey, Zhao Yang, I have to say this outfit and hood really feel right. How did you come up with such a strange design? But I think this red underwear I'm wearing is a bit too eye-catching. Why is the underwear sewn on the outside? I feel like your spider suit looks better; why don’t we switch outfits?"
"Stop talking nonsense. If you can't run later because you're so fat, don't call me for help!" Zhao Yang gave Long Xiao Wu a light smack on the head. Long Xiao Wu was not one to take it lying down and was about to retaliate when Zhao Yang immediately ducked behind the wall and signaled for Long Xiao Wu to be quiet because a figure was approaching. The figure stopped less than twenty meters away from them, glanced in their direction, and then continued walking.
"What’s wrong?" Long Xiao Wu whispered.
"Someone might have noticed us; their cultivation level is very high, but for some reason, they walked away."
As Zhao Yang spoke, he followed after the figure while Long Xiao Wu stealthily peered over the wall to see what was happening.
"He entered the first disciple's room. It seems he should be our Outer Sect's top person; no wonder he feels so unfathomable."
"What should we do now? Are we still going to act?"
"We just need to avoid alerting those upper-level experts. We’ll aim to take out Han Hai and his group in one strike, starting from number seventeen."
Zhao Yang leaped a few times toward the Seventeenth Disciple's Room, and Long Xiao Wu hurriedly followed. This was actually the first time in his life that he wanted to kill someone, and it was an assassination at that—seven people all at once. How could he not feel scared? When his family was bullied, he would only play some pranks or give others a light smack as revenge. He had no idea that the cultivation world was a place where it was either you die or I die. Although he felt uncertain about this assassination, being with Zhao Yang provided him with some comfort.
Upon arriving at the Seventeenth Disciple's Room, Zhao Yang knocked twice on the door. Immediately, a voice came from inside, scolding, "Who the hell is disturbing my sleep in the middle of the night? Haven't you learned any manners after all this time?"
Zhao Yang listened closely and recognized that the voice belonged to Ma Qing, the long-faced disciple who had tried to kill him but had received a slap from Long Xiao Wu instead. He quickly adjusted his tone to sound deeper and said, "Ma Shidi, it's me. I have something important to discuss."
"Oh, I'll be right there. Wait a moment, Shixiong." Ma Qing couldn't tell who it was; he hated being woken up from sleep. He was about to lose his temper but thought that since the voice sounded low and called him Shidi, it might be Han Hai or someone else from their group. Without thinking much further, he opened the door with a creak. However, before he could clearly see who was in front of him, he felt a sharp pain in his neck and found himself falling backward uncontrollably. In his last moments, he caught a glimpse of what had severed his head—a humanoid red spider, a Spider Demon.
Outside the door, Long Xiao Wu stood dumbfounded. This... this was too fast! The method of killing was swift and ruthless; it didn't resemble that of a novice at all! But then again, Zhao Yang had never mentioned whether he was a beginner or an expert.
After giving Long Xiao Wu a light pat to snap him out of his daze, Zhao Yang whispered, "Hey, don’t just stand there staring. This guy was too arrogant and had low vigilance; getting killed in the Sect was only a matter of time."
