Mountains and rivers burned, leaving a scorched earth for thousands of miles.
Zhao Yang flew out of the giant pit with Little Beast, landing on the ground. As he gazed at the scene before him, a storm surged within his heart. He stood in shock, witnessing everything around him reduced to rubble. All traces that should have existed on this land had vanished, leaving a vast expanse of desolation. Alone, he stood between heaven and earth, unable to see the horizon, a sense of loneliness rising within him.
In the distance, some golden liquid seeped into the soil, faintly retaining a powerful aura. It was the essence of a Nascent Soul Stage cultivator who had been shattered into Primordial Infant liquid. The radiant light suggested that this Primordial Infant cultivator had been formidable in life.
“Chirp Chirp,” Little Beast poked its head out and lazily called out twice, sensing the faint sorrow emanating from Zhao Yang.
The mysterious aura surrounding Zhao Yang reappeared. Although he stood on this vast plain, he felt as if he were amidst a sea of people, witnessing the world's splendor like a wandering traveler.
It was then that Zhao Yang noticed he had unknowingly advanced from the second layer to the third layer of Foundation Establishment Stage after waking up. He was still enveloped in a faint layer of colorful clouds, which slowly merged with his injuries, healing the bones that had been shattered within him.
Zhao Yang recalled seeing his master’s figure before losing consciousness—tall and majestic, like a mountain standing beside him, guarding him. Feeling a surge of emotion, he reached back to touch the spot at the back of his head and soon found what he was looking for, his eyes moistening.
“It’s not my master’s true form, but my master has never left me.” Zhao Yang realized that there were three strands of Monkey Hair left by Sun Wukong behind his head.
“To think such a powerful attack was merely my master’s avatar. It seems my master has high hopes for me; perhaps he intends to help me with a single hair when I encounter an insurmountable foe after becoming a top-tier powerhouse in the cultivation world.” Zhao Yang mused, recalling the black-clad woman from the illusion in the Imperial Scripture. With two strands of Monkey Hair remaining, he silently vowed to avoid situations where death was certain.
“I wonder how Yu Qingsnow is doing. My master wouldn’t have killed her too, would he?” Zhao Yang couldn’t help but worry; after all, he had risked everything to save her and could still feel her delicate hand.
Before departing, Zhao Yang had mentioned meeting at The First Great Sect of Zhongzhou. Now, he was unaware which sects in the cultivation world were truly significant and needed to find a place where cultivators gathered. With this thought in mind, he quickened his pace to leave this scorched land as soon as possible.
Suddenly, the Spirit Pearl on his chest trembled violently, alternating between hot and cold. Zhao Yang snatched the Spirit Pearl from Little Beast's hands and followed its coordinates to a charred area. There, on the ground lay a black box emitting faint azure light from its cracks.
The Black Box radiated mysterious energy, beside it lay a blood-red handprint. Fragments of torn cloth and fresh blood remained scattered around the box.
"What is this box that it can defeat experts at the Nascent Soul Stage and still preserve everything around it? Ah! That damned monkey!" Zhao Yang exclaimed, suddenly realizing something that made his expression pained. "So many experts from the Core Formation Stage to the Divine Transformation Stage and then to the Nascent Soul Stage must have brought many treasures, all ruined by this Monkey Head!"
Zhao Yang picked up the Black Box, wanting to open it and see what was hidden inside. However, with his strength, he couldn't manage to open it. He tried using the principles of Power Rules from the cultivation world to pry it open, but unexpectedly, the box emitted a powerful suction force, attempting to draw him in.
Startled, Zhao Yang quickly stopped, fearing something bad might happen. He knew that in the cultivation world, there were all sorts of strange occurrences, and sometimes even great power couldn't forcibly break certain rules.
"Chirp Chirp!" The Little Beast flew out from his arms, its eyes wide with surprise. It clutched the Black Box with its tiny paws, tapping and biting at it. Unfortunately, after biting for a long time, it couldn't budge the Black Box at all and ended up leaving some glistening drool on it.
"Seriously? That's disgusting," Zhao Yang said as he swatted the Little Beast away, carefully wiping the box. He sensed that there must be something extraordinary hidden inside; otherwise, it wouldn't be contained in such a sturdy treasure box. Moreover, anything found by the Spirit Pearl was at least of Little Sacred Fruit level. He cautiously placed the Black Box into his pocket and shot a disdainful glance at the Little Beast.
"Just so you know, my pocket contains my personal belongings. You can't look through them or take anything without my permission, got it?" Zhao Yang said to the Little Beast while rummaging through his pocket. He furrowed his brow in confusion. "Where's my Yuan Yang Fruit? I remember I had two left that I didn't want to eat."
Ever since Zhao Yang learned that Yuan Yang Fruit was a type of Little Sacred Fruit, he had been particularly protective of the remaining ones. Especially when he was down to just three; he couldn't bear to eat them. During his escape, he had given one to Yu Qingsnow and secretly kept two for himself.
"Chirp Chirp!" Upon hearing Zhao Yang mention Yuan Yang Fruit, the Little Beast suddenly looked proud, sitting upright in front of him with its mouth turned up and eyes sparkling with expectation as if waiting for Zhao Yang to praise it.
"You mean you forced yourself to eat my last two Yuan Yang Fruits and still claim you're not picky? You want me to praise you?" Zhao Yang interpreted its behavior.
"Chirp Chirp!" The Little Beast nodded eagerly, seemingly pleased with how this big brother understood it.
Zhao Yang shouted in frustration, stomping his feet in anger. Taking advantage of the Little Beast's moment of distraction, he lunged forward to step on it for revenge. However, the Little Beast was as fast as lightning and easily dodged.
"Chirp Chirp?" The Little Beast looked confused, pouting with its little paws on its hips, not understanding why Zhao Yang wanted to step on it.
"Don't act innocent in front of me, Little Nine. Let me tell you something: even though we just met, as my pet spirit beast, you need to behave like one. Don't think I won't dare to hit you! I should be riding you; instead, I'm carrying you around while you steal my treasures! Where's your conscience?" Zhao Yang was so exasperated that he started lecturing the Little Beast.
“Chirp Chirp?” The Little Beast continued to look innocent, its big eyes gazing at Zhao Yang with a pitiful expression, as if about to cry. Drooping its ears, it turned to leave. After taking a few steps, it glanced back at Zhao Yang before slowly walking away.
“Damn!” Zhao Yang was speechless; this trick was too childish. He was truly overwhelmed by the cuteness of this Little Beast.
“Alright, alright, I was just teasing you. I won’t hit you anymore, come here.” Zhao Yang admitted his mistake again.
Hearing Zhao Yang's words, the Little Beast scampered over to his side, climbing up his pant leg and perching on his shoulder, joyfully facing the breeze with an air of triumph.
Zhao Yang shook his head at the sight of the Little Beast and touched the Black Box in his arms, preparing to search around for anything that hadn’t been destroyed. Suddenly, his fingers brushed against another box in his embrace. He pulled it out for a closer look; it was the brocade box that Fire Wuyan had given him just before dying. From what he learned during a memory search conducted by a Nascent Soul Old Monster, he knew that the item inside was called the Earth Fire Seal. He also had an Ice Soul Seal in his possession, which emitted a chilling aura and was sealed with special runes.
Zhao Yang understood that the Ice Soul Seal was a low-grade Dao Treasure, so he presumed that the Earth Fire Seal must also be at least a low-grade Dao Treasure. He didn’t know exactly what Dao Treasures represented in the cultivation world, but he had witnessed Yu Qingsnow unleashing the sixth string of King Yu's Zither like a goddess during her final moments of escape. The sound waves had shattered countless low-level disciples and Core Formation Stage cultivators alike, leaving them in disarray. The shock he felt then still resonated within him.
To kill a Core Formation Stage cultivator with just Foundation Establishment Stage cultivation—especially in such a devastating manner—was almost unimaginable. If word got out, many major sects would surely compete to recruit such an extraordinary woman, while some unscrupulous cultivators would scheme to obtain her King Yu's Zither. However, playing the zither required King Yu’s unique mental techniques and melodies; thus, even though Yuwang City had fallen into obscurity for a long time, no skilled practitioners had attempted to seize King Yu's Zither—an exceptional Dao artifact meant solely for the descendants of the Yu family.
Zhao Yang’s injuries had not yet healed, and he knew that with his current cultivation level, he could not control either the Earth Fire Seal or the Ice Soul Seal. Therefore, he dared not unseal these Dao Treasures. Moreover, among those of his own level, he essentially held all power as long as he didn’t encounter any outstanding figures from the Core Formation Stage; he wouldn’t need to use Dao Treasures at all.
After flying around the area again without finding any treasures, he did manage to locate some rare spirit stones and some orange and yellow Essence Stones from the tiny starlights displayed on the Spirit Pearl. Even though they contained mostly depleted Spirit Energy, they were sufficient for Zhao Yang to replenish what he had exhausted from overusing True Qi. The collapsed Foundation Cauldron within him was gradually healing under the powerful restorative abilities of Chaos True Qi, becoming even stronger.
