The Sky City stood about ten zhang above the ground, its massive form looming against the backdrop of swirling clouds.
The buildings atop the Sky City were ancient yet exquisitely crafted, each inch a testament to countless refinements over time.
The Sky City cast a vast shadow, beneath which heaps of bones lay piled, thousands upon thousands, an unfathomable number.
Suddenly, a figure appeared above the Sky City, standing at its edge and gazing towards Zhao Yang. Upon seeing Zhao Yang and his companions, the figure gasped and hurriedly flew down from the Sky City.
After an unknown amount of time, Zhao Yang awoke from his slumber, a hint of color returning to his eyes. His face remained gaunt and pale, while Liu Rou lay beside his bed, her small hand tightly gripping Zhao Yang's. He gently stroked Liu Rou's long hair, feeling a pang of sympathy.
"Brother Zhao Yang, you finally woke up," Liu Rou exclaimed as she suddenly stirred awake. Rubbing her reddened eyes, she began to cry. "The scholar said you gave all your True Qi to keep us alive."
"The scholar?" Zhao Yang was surprised to hear that the scholar was still alive.
Liu Rou nodded and said, "It was the scholar who saved us. His Water God Technique can gather moisture and condense it into Water True Qi without being suppressed by the Boundless Desert's harsh environment."
"Where is he? What about the others?" Zhao Yang asked.
Liu Rou replied, "He overexerted himself to save us, severely injuring his foundation of Dao. Now Song Shixiong and Sister Qingxue are healing him."
"Then I will get up," Zhao Yang said as he attempted to rise.
"You should lie down a bit longer," Liu Rou quickly pressed him back down, worried that he wasn't fully recovered. However, in doing so, her hand inadvertently landed on a sensitive part of Zhao Yang's body.
A strange expression crossed Zhao Yang's face while Liu Rou remained oblivious until she noticed that what she was touching was growing larger. Suddenly recalling what a senior sister had once told her about a man's anatomy during their time in Falling Flower Valley, her face flushed bright red.
When she met Zhao Yang's teasing gaze, she quickly covered her face and ran out, exclaiming, "You're so bad! I'm so embarrassed!"
Zhao Yang chuckled helplessly. He felt that his body had indeed recovered significantly and got up to step outside. Though the buildings here were ancient, they provided him with a sense of comfort and were surprisingly dust-free. Zhao Yang slowly ascended to a high platform to survey the distance but soon furrowed his brow again; he still sensed no fluctuations of water elements.
Inside an extraordinarily magnificent palace, Zhao Yang beheld the intricately carved throne. He was unaware of what events had transpired in this aerial Giant City that caused its inhabitants to vanish. This palace was far larger than the Central Sovereign's palace and even dwarfed the residences of the Zhao Clan Imperial Family and the Dragon Clan. Within such a vast Giant City, there must have once existed an unparalleled figure of great stature.
On either side of the palace walls, countless totems adorned the space, numbering in the tens of thousands. Each totem narrated the former splendor of this city.
Yet history ultimately reduced this city to ruins.
No one can endure through the river of time forever.
Zhao Yang noticed that above the grand hall, there had once been a plaque, but it seemed to have been removed. He did not linger long, flying around the Giant City until he finally spotted two enormous characters on one side—Cloud Wasteland.
"So this aerial city is called Cloud Wasteland," Zhao Yang murmured softly. "The One Hundred Thousand Volumes of Books never mentioned it. Other than what is found in the main hall, many items in the side chambers remain untouched and undamaged, yet some things turn to dust with just a light touch. How long has this city existed? Could it have once been inhabited by immortals?"
Zhao Yang was puzzled; the One Hundred Thousand Volumes of Books made no mention of Cloud Wasteland, which seemed utterly bizarre. What kind of person could construct such exquisite architecture?
Zhao Yang expanded his Divine Sense and located Song Baliang and others. Song Baliang, Nangong Wuxin, and Yu Qingsnow were gathered in a circle, healing Scholar Xiu. Various True Qi flowed through Scholar Xiu's meridians, indicating that his foundation had suffered severe damage. Although Song Baliang's appearance had returned to normal, his complexion remained grim.
"Zhao Yang, you're here," Scholar Xiu said with relief upon seeing him.
Zhao Yang nodded and asked, "What exactly happened?"
Scholar Xiu pulled out a Jade Book from his robe. Zhao Yang took it but immediately frowned because he did not recognize any of the characters on it.
"I don't understand these characters either," Scholar Xiu admitted, "but you can look at the totem on the back of the Jade Book."
Zhao Yang flipped the Jade Book over and indeed saw a vividly depicted totem on its back. Everyone present gasped in astonishment as they recognized that the totem illustrated none other than Little Nine!
"Little Nine?" Zhao Yang couldn't help but feel nostalgic. It had been several years since he last saw Little Nine; he wondered where she was now and if she was well.
"Scholar Xiu said, 'This city is called Cloud Wasteland. I spent a year in Cloud Ruins City, exploring every corner and discovering that it is a remnant of an ancient civilization that has long been lost. They were once a true divine race, but I do not know what disaster caused them to flee here. Even they cannot survive in the Boundless Desert, as the rules of the Boundless Desert are related to a realm of our cultivators.'
'It can't be the Ascension Realm, can it?' Song Baliang asked suspiciously.
Scholar Xiu nodded and replied, 'Indeed, it is the Ascension Realm.'
Zhao Yang inquired, 'Is it related to our escape?'
Scholar Xiu nodded again, saying, 'I have integrated most of the Jade Books they left behind and discovered a set of patterns.' Scholar Xiu placed a Jade Book on the stone platform before everyone. 'Although I cannot understand the text on this Jade Book, the patterns indicate the division of the Nine Major Realms of Cultivation. Why are there so many experts in the Tribulation Period within the Cultivation world, yet none dare to Transcend Tribulation? Do you really think their strength is insufficient? Wrong. It is because they cannot sense the existence of the Ascension Stage at all. The rules of the Ascension Stage have been infinitely compressed into the Boundless Desert, creating this dead zone. Once the Boundless Desert is broken, someone from outside will surely Transcend Tribulation and Ascend. The only way for us to escape is for someone to cultivate to the Ascension Realm!'
Nangong Wuxin said, 'Scholar, isn't that just empty talk? Currently, Brother Ba Liang has the highest cultivation among us, and it is impossible for him to step into the Tribulation Period in a short time, let alone achieve the elusive Ascend! With Brother Ba Liang's cultivation level, Transcending Tribulation would be akin to seeking death!'
However, Scholar Xiu appeared confident and replied, 'Just because Brother Ba Liang cannot do it does not mean Zhao Yang cannot.'
Upon hearing Scholar Xiu's words, Zhao Yang seemed to think of something and asked, 'I want to know where the water source comes from?'
Scholar Xiu's eyes revealed a sense of righteousness as he said, 'The Water God Technique has reached a certain level through my day and night cultivation. Unfortunately, without a large water source, even if I pass it on to you, you would not be able to cultivate it. But with me here, I can naturally condense qi into water.'
Zhao Yang shook his head and said, 'No, you will die.'
Scholar Xiu replied, 'If this continues, I will also die. This is our only chance. I have searched every corner of Cloud Ruins City; there are no mechanisms or teleportation altars here. This place is a forbidden zone for cultivators; anyone who enters will die unless they are an immortal!'
'What are you all talking about?!' Song Baliang finally couldn't help but ask.
Scholar Xiu explained: 'Do not forget that Zhao Yang's Divine Sense has long reached the Transcendence of the Tribulation Period. Although his realm is only at Nascent Soul Stage, it is precisely because he is at Nascent Soul Stage that I won't exhaust his True Qi too quickly. As long as I provide support, once Zhao Yang expands his Tribulation Period Divine Sense to that of an Ascension Stage Divine Sense, he will surely be able to break the curse of the Boundless Desert and disrupt its rules.'
After listening to this, Nangong Wuxin said: 'Cultivating in the Boundless Desert and breaking through from Tribulation Period Divine Sense—others may not be able to do it, but Zhao Yang certainly can. However, you must understand that Zhao Yang possesses the body constitution of a Rebel Son. If you become his source of cultivation support, can you really withstand it?'"
"Scholar Xiu said, 'I would rather die than here. With my abilities, I can sustain your life supply, but it won't last long. When I die, you will all perish from thirst as well. Since we are all bound to die, we might as well place our hopes on Zhao Yang. As long as he reaches the Divine Sense realm of the Ascension Stage, he may be able to break through the restrictions of this place, and perhaps we can all escape.'
'I will think about it,' Zhao Yang replied as he turned to leave. When he heard Scholar Xiu say that he could do it, he thought of this possibility. However, he was well aware of his own cultivation level. With Scholar Xiu's ordinary aptitude and the harsh conditions of the Boundless Desert limiting his ability to provide for his training needs, there was almost no chance for survival.
This reminded him of what Huang Long Laodao had told him back in the Dragon Domain—asking him to save his grandson.
But how could he save anyone when he could barely protect himself? Even if he disagreed with this plan, Scholar Xiu would eventually be drained to death in Cloud Ruins City. He didn't know what to do, but time was not on their side.
Two days later, after searching through Cloud Ruins City, Zhao Yang found no other means to help them escape.
In the scorching heat of Cloud Ruins City, Scholar Xiu continuously provided water elements to Zhao Yang using the Water God Technique, preventing Zhao Yang from exhausting himself completely. Yet, before half a day had passed, Scholar Xiu nearly fainted from the effort.
Song Baliang, Nangong Wuxin, Liu Rou, and Yu Qingsnow each transmitted their True Qi to Scholar Xiu, who then converted it into the necessary water True Qi for Zhao Yang.
Time passed without notice; Song Baliang, Nangong Wuxin, and Yu Qingsnow all fainted from excessive consumption of their True Qi. They had given their all.
Meanwhile, Zhao Yang was immersed in his cultivation and unaware of everything happening outside. The training of Divine Sense was extremely perilous; any mistake could lead to the destruction of his Divine Soul. He could not afford to err.
With a thunderous sound, something erupted from Zhao Yang's Sea of Consciousness, creating a piercing noise. A faint smile of comfort appeared on Scholar Xiu's pale face as he slowly collapsed like a frail old man devoid of any color or vitality.
At that moment, Zhao Yang opened his eyes and gazed across the Boundless Desert. Through the clouds, he reached the heavenly realm and saw an old man in white robes with white hair in his cave dwelling.
The old man exclaimed in surprise and murmured, 'Who is this? Is there someone in the lower realm who can ascend to immortality?'
Zhao Yang withdrew his gaze and looked at the lifeless Scholar Xiu and the others who were barely alive. He gathered them up and flew them out of Cloud Ruins City.
The restrictions of the Boundless Desert were shattered as Zhao Yang tore through the void and returned to the cultivation world. At that moment, all cultivators in the cultivation realm felt a disturbance as if something innate within them had been restored; many resurrected Transcending Tribulation Stage Cultivators sensed that something within them had been mended."
“Celestial Root has actually returned?” an old Taoist exclaimed, his voice trembling with excitement.
When a cultivator enters the Tribulation Period, a segment of Celestial Root forms within them. This Celestial Root serves as the foundation for Transcend Tribulation. If a cultivator fails to Transcend Tribulation, they will lose their Celestial Root and thus be unable to follow the Celestial Path. In reality, these individuals have not met the standards for the Ascension Stage. The Celestial Root decays on its own because their cultivation is far too inadequate to withstand the powerful tribulations of the Ascension Stage!
Only those who are true masters, having reached the bottleneck of the Tribulation Period, can successfully Transcend Tribulation. Such individuals who survive the Heavenly Tribulation will Ascend to Immortality, while those who cannot pass into the heavenly realm will face complete annihilation. Only those who dare not Transcend Tribulation or know they will surely perish if they attempt it choose to enter a deep slumber until they are awakened by the Ginseng King.
The moment Zhao Yang emerged from the Boundless Desert, the void collapsed, and a whirlwind surged forth. Endless life essence poured in from all directions, nourishing their bodies. The sounds of breakthroughs echoed in their ears as powerful True Qi formed massive waves that swept toward the sky.
“The aura of the Rebel Son has appeared! Capture him! We must seize the Ginseng King! The loss of Spirit Energy in the cultivation world is immense; our time is running out!” Many Old Monsters of the Tribulation Period turned their gazes toward where Zhao Yang stood.
The boundless life essence continued to nourish Song Baliang and the others. When Song Baliang awoke once more, a sense of rebirth filled his heart. He glanced at Zhao Yang, who was casting spells, and exclaimed excitedly, “Junior Brother, you did it!”
Nangong Wuxin, Yu Qingsnow, and Liu Rou also regained consciousness. Their auras surged toward the Dueling Palace, illuminating the heavenly realm, each movement infused with an inexplicable sense of Dao Yun.
“My cultivation has actually broken through from the mid-Dao Fruit Stage to the Great Perfection Stage!” Nangong Wuxin said in surprise, having previously been at mid-Dao Fruit!
Both Liu Rou and Yu Qingsnow tested their own cultivation levels as well, finding themselves at the Great Perfection Stage. Meanwhile, Song Baliang had reached the Great Perfection of the Mahayana Stage, just a step away from achieving true perfection and entering the eighth realm of cultivation—the Tribulation Period, becoming an unparalleled existence in the cultivation world.
“What’s wrong with Scholar Xiu? Why hasn’t he woken up yet?!” Song Baliang looked at Scholar Xiu, still lying on the ground.
Tears welled up in Nangong Wuxin’s eyes as she said, “Scholar…”
“Someone is coming here; we need to leave,” said Zhao Yang. With a wave of his hand, he stored Scholar Xiu into his Cosmic Bag. Then he enveloped everyone in his own Chaos True Qi, suddenly tearing through space and vanishing from sight. In an instant, they reappeared in the courtyard of Xuanfo Temple.
