The safety passage suddenly went dark as the fluorescent lights flickered out, plunging everything into immediate blackness.
Xuanyuan Shun dared not make a sound, leaning against the cold wall. After a moment of support, he took a deep breath and said calmly, "You scared me. I really thought I was going to be out. That was close."
From the other end of the passage, footsteps approached—two students, a boy and a girl.
Xuanyuan Shun's heart raced, and he muttered, "Damn it, here they come again."
Guo Yu let out a derisive snicker, mocking him. "Xuanyuan, are you really that afraid of being out? I didn't think you were so timid. This place isn't safe; we need to leave quickly. If they change their minds and bring more people to search here, staying won't do us any good. You should just stick with us."
Xuanyuan Shun patted his chest and sighed lightly. "I didn't know you had such skills to mimic multiple voices. You scared me! If they figure it out, do you know what will happen to me? I'll be the first one to get beaten up."
"Well, everything seems fine now," Doll-Head Girl said with a smile.
Guo Yu continued, "Hey, if you come with us and gather a few more companions, our chances of survival will increase. There's no point in staying here; that door won't open. If we stay, we'll just be waiting to die. Let's go; we can deal with whatever comes after we get out."
"Alright, alright. While you two are busy being all lovey-dovey, poor me has to tag along," Xuanyuan Shun shook his head in resignation. "Let’s hurry up; this isn’t your first time here, is it?"
Doll-Head Girl covered her mouth and laughed softly. "Hehe, coming right up!"
Guo Yu lowered her head and peered into the darkness as she knelt on one knee, feeling around for something. Then she touched two slender legs and instinctively reached down further before tying the shoelaces back in place in the dark.
"I'll carry you; your legs must hurt. You haven't had a proper rest."
"No, I'm not tired. I chose to come to this university with you."
"I'll still carry you; weren't you always fond of me carrying you?"
"Mm."
Xuanyuan Feng glanced back, dramatically rolling his eyes and letting out a loud yawn. The girl seemed to be touched by some emotion; although it was not visible, it appeared as if warm, crystal-clear tears were streaming down her cheeks.
"Come on, let's go! The Daylily is getting cold. My Dear Brother, Sister, what kind of place is this? In the dark, you two are being all lovey-dovey. Hurry up, or my eyes will be blinded by your sweetness!"
Xuanyuan Shun complained again. It wasn't really a complaint; it was just a casual remark. He watched as others paired off while he remained single, feeling a bit unbalanced and frustrated with no outlet for his feelings. He had heard that college life was carefree, filled with beautiful upperclassmen and graceful younger girls ready to be pursued, but he hadn't even officially entered the campus yet. The final military training test was driving him to the brink.
"It's fine now, let's go."
Guo Yu was quick to act, and Xuanyuan Shun followed the two down the stairs.
"You two are so close; if you get caught, neither of you will escape," Xuanyuan Shun remarked.
Guo Yu caught the underlying meaning in his words and replied with a different tone, "There's no choice; her leg hurts and she's weak. She can't run far, so this way at least she can hold on a bit longer."
"Alright then, good luck to you."
After descending the stairs and walking for a short while, they finally saw a bright exit ahead.
Seeing the light brought a sense of relief to the three of them as they continued forward.
As they stepped outside, a gentle breeze brushed against their faces.
At this moment, it was nearing evening, approaching dusk.
A cool breeze swept by again, bringing a hint of chill to their warm bodies.
"There's someone who seems to be a student from our camp," a voice exclaimed.
The Doll-Head Girl Student screamed, pointing in the direction of a shadow approaching them.
Upon hearing this, Xuanyuan Shun and Guo Yu furrowed their brows, their hearts on alert.
The Doll-Head Girl Student looked at the two boys, puzzled. "What are you doing? He's one of us."
"Tingting, how do you know he's one of us? Right now, he's just a shadow. The distance from there to here is nearly a thousand meters. That's the ultimate limit of human vision; I can only make out a rough outline. I can't just assume he's one of us. We can't always take a woman's intuition seriously. War can be deadly. If he's truly an ally, that's fine, but if he's an enemy..." Guo Yu replied.
"Hmph! Would you believe me if I had superpowers?" Zhao Tingting muttered as the shadow drew closer, becoming more distinguishable. He was wearing a peculiar helmet.
However, they then realized that after hearing footsteps in the safe passage earlier, they had switched their pagers to silent mode. At that moment, the room was filled with continuous calls.
Zhao Tingting sat on the ground while the two boys exchanged glances and smiled at each other.
After a while, the figure approached them from afar.
Freyr came forward like he had found long-lost companions, extending his arms to embrace both of them affectionately.
"I've found you! I've been looking for you for so long."
They embraced for a good ten seconds.
Freyr released his hold, a long-lost smile of relief appearing on his face.
“It’s dusk now, and the real danger is just beginning. We should gather the remaining companions.”
Freya had already made up his mind; he decided to settle things with the Cosmic Insect Faction once and for all. In his past life, he had heard from many veterans returning from military training about the captain of the Cosmic Insect Faction. He was a bizarre individual who would go so far as to ruin the health of members from other teams. Ultimately, they emerged victorious, but the Joint Defense Heroes were systematically defeated, with only a few escaping retribution. The vast majority were beaten to a pulp and had their medals taken away.
If it were merely a matter of strength disparity, there would be nothing to say. Climbing up on the shoulders of companions to succeed meant that allowing such a person to obtain the Gene Pill would be more harmful than beneficial. In his previous life, information about this captain was scarce; all he knew was that he was executed at the onset of the war for the notorious crime of possessing newly developed mech data.
Even without that incident, Gongze Tuo Ajiaste was a bully on campus. There was little information about him beyond his bad reputation, and it seemed that his twisted and perverse personality led him to bully those around him, yet no one dared to speak out against him.
“In ten minutes, all eight remaining members will be gathered.”
As captain, this authority meant that even when in silent mode, messages would still transmit deep into his brain. The helmet was made of a special material, giving rise to the conical shape characteristic of later technological helmets.
“The target is the auditorium!”
Guo Yu received the coordinates and was initially startled by the news before revealing an expression of sudden understanding.
Xuanyuan Shun felt alarmed. “I don’t understand; what does this mean?” His expression resembled pickled vegetables—confused and sour. It seemed he truly did not grasp how this tactic differed from suicide. The so-called fight-to-the-death strategy implied that knowing the auditorium would be their final destination meant that most of the Cosmic Worm faction would inevitably gather at their return point.
Conversely, at this moment, the Cosmic Worm's achievements surpassed those of the United Defense Heroes Camp by several points. There was no need for them to continue searching in the twilight; operating in darkness was not their style. A fight-to-the-death scenario indicated that hope for victory was exceedingly slim, leading teams within their faction to band together for one last desperate struggle.
In his previous life, such tactics never had a chance to be executed; they were systematically defeated by the Cosmic Insect Faction. However, with Freyr's involvement at the start of this game in this current life, most individuals with combat experience had fortunately survived. Those eliminated would only become trophies for his team or perhaps even burdens.
"Alright, I still need one person's help."
When Freyr spoke those simple words, the three people present were momentarily taken aback.
Xuanyuan Shun adjusted his formal attire and feigned nonchalance, asking, "Who are you looking for?"
He felt a bit more confident as he watched Freyr approach him, but that confidence quickly faded when he saw Freyr kneel in front of Doll-Head Girl Student. Zhao Tingting froze for a moment, while Guo Yu turned his head, his face clearly expressing disbelief.
Anyone would think that Freyr was insane.
"The person you're looking for is me," Zhao Tingting said, snapping back to her senses. She quickly regained her composure, smiled sweetly, and responded in a delicate voice.
"Not bad; you were able to observe my appearance from such a distance."
"You possess the qualities of a Telepath, and as your genes awaken, you will become an essential force for any team striving to enhance their capabilities."
"How about trying to harness that power to help us win?"
As soon as the words left Freyr's mouth, Zhao Tingting glanced at Guo Yu beside her, appearing quite helpless. She immediately said, "But what can I do?"
Guo Yu understood and quickly responded, "Yeah, Captain, she just got lucky. She often guesses the answers right based on her intuition as a woman. Someone who relies on luck like that will inevitably lead to predictable results. I think we should put her in a safe place and let her out after the competition ends."
Freyr glanced at Guo Yu with a furrowed brow and said immediately, "Guo Yu, you've known her for so long; surely you realize there aren't really people who are that lucky in this world? Is it even possible? Luck doesn't just keep flowing; someone who can always guess correctly is frightening enough to become a weapon of causality. It's unrealistic."
Guo Yu paused for a moment, hesitating before contemplating aloud, "You're right; that does seem unrealistic."
Xuanyuan Shun remained silent for a long time before shouting in exasperation, "Ah, I'm so confused! I'm a descendant of a prominent family, and you all believe in this yellow-haired girl’s abilities. It drives me crazy!"
Freyr turned to look at him, rolling his eyes. "Be quiet for a moment; I’m focusing on your abilities."
Seeing that everyone was convinced, Zhao Tingting, who shouldn’t have been silent, finally spoke up. "Hmm, how should I monetize this ability of mine?"
Freyr's forehead twitched as he thought for a moment before responding with a smile, "Using this term would be more appropriate."
The Doll-Head Girl Student nodded confidently. Guo Yu stood by, watching the girl silently, clearly lost in thoughts he shouldn’t have been having.
Once upon a time, he had promised to protect the girl at all costs.
Dusk had fallen, and a gentle breeze swept through. Time was running short as several hidden groups appeared in various corners of the campus. These battle-hardened individuals received their captain's orders and emerged from their hiding spots. Meanwhile, in the auditorium, another group was present when a hoarse voice rang out, "What’s going on? Why is it so noisy?"
"Start a revolution! Overthrow them; the captain will be here soon."
Among the two factions, a figure squeezed out from the ranks of the Joint Defense Heroes.
He was slender with flaxen hair styled in a side parting that gave him a somewhat doll-like appearance. He was also mumbling about taking on ten opponents like an idiot.
Idiots were common every year, especially among those from the United Defense Heroes Camp.
