If we were to assess the current state of the two teams, aside from their lethargy, their morale had surprisingly remained largely intact.
However, upon reflection, they had been together for several months. Compared to professional soldiers or other newly formed bug-hunting teams, their time for bonding was relatively long. Although there were two captains, their rapport was strong; one excelled in support while the other was adept at taking action. Naturally, none of the newcomers dared to disrupt the communication between the two.
Even the newcomers understood that they were still fresh recruits. If it were anyone else, they likely wouldn’t receive such treatment. Yet under their command, even the authority of the military seemed diminished. They had swiftly defeated the second-ranked Wolf Brigade, and now it seemed that following these two was indeed the right choice.
Freyr scratched his cheek awkwardly and glanced at the map’s indicators before matching them with the landmarks in front of him. "We should take this route; that's what the map indicates."
"Indeed," Nosty’s voice remained cold but suddenly cut through the group. "The area of mental shielding has vanished. It wasn’t my own mental impact that triggered this change. I can now fully sense the biological signals within that area, and it’s not good—there’s a formidable group approaching us at nearly a kilometer per hour. Their target appears to be us, and they’re a team of ten."
One woman in the group chuckled, "What? A team of ten? That’s even fewer than our combined forces!"
"If only that were true. But if that team can advance on foot at a speed of one kilometer per hour, those individuals are practically monstrous in terms of physical capability. I don’t know where my confidence should come from. One of them is a mental controller capable of blocking biological signals within a kilometer radius for several hours. With such skills, just how terrifying are these individuals?" As he spoke, a faint blue hue appeared on Nosty’s skin.
Once the blue spread from his neck, Nosty began to show signs of physical exhaustion. However, at such a critical moment, he was indispensable to the team. A girl was pushed aside as many rushed over to help him up. Without a Field Doctor in their ranks, there were no healing pills available unless he willingly chose to abandon the fight.
Yet it was possible that somewhere nearby, a group was tracking them at all times, recording any data they could gather. Although there was a risk of death during this process, due to their machines’ capabilities, they could almost reduce the mortality rate to nearly zero.
Nosty urged urgently, "Listen to me; from now on, we need to scatter and escape. That’s our best option. I know my body can’t go much further. If we do this, at least they won’t kill me immediately, and I can pull my own pin and declare my withdrawal on the spot. They won’t get any information from a dead man; I guarantee that with my life."
Froth, Freyr, and Duan Shuai shuddered at his words. Freyr's neck trembled with anger as he stepped forward and slapped Nosty across the face, exclaiming fiercely, "You bastard! Do you think so little of us? Remember, we’ve already defeated Wolf Brigade! We’re going back with our heads held high! At this moment, I won’t allow anyone to fall behind—no exceptions!"
"If it were me," another voice chimed in ominously, "I would first silence you and then break your arms and legs so you couldn’t struggle or continue moving. They would treat you like a war criminal—torturing you mercilessly while constantly berating you until you walked straight into their traps. You might think you’re not answering their questions, but in reality, they would glean everything from your reactions—your psychology, your eyes—anything they could exploit."
Nosty remained silent, his eyes closed as he pondered something deeply. Suddenly, the corners of his mouth twitched slightly, and he said calmly, "Run."
The others were taken aback by his words. At that moment, many people from behind grabbed Freyr, but Duan Shuai suddenly spoke up, "What do you mean? I don't understand. While I really want to know what you're thinking, do you really intend to sacrifice yourself to save the whole team? No one wanted to hit you earlier; if Freyr hadn't acted suddenly, I would have wanted to strike too. Do you think we're so useless that we need to leave you behind to slow them down in order to survive? If that's the case, then we're just pathetic."
"Fool, we can vote within the team; the minority obeys the majority. If others really want to abandon you here, then if that's the result, it will be what it will be. But before that, you useless one should still hold onto hope and live!"
Despite his words, the others hurriedly came forward to comfort and persuade Nosty. However, they soon noticed something strange: Nosty's skin was becoming increasingly hot, and the blue hue at the corner of his mouth slowly brushed over his head. At that moment, he began to tremble slightly, which made everyone feel that something was off.
Suddenly, Duan Shuai turned around and spotted a group of shadows approaching from a distance. Perched on a tree not far away were two figures: a massive man who looked like a Strongman and a short girl with two pigtails, a Purple-Haired Loli sitting on the Strongman's shoulder. It seemed that the Strongman was also quite fearful of the Loli beside him.
"No, no! Freyr, we both misunderstood. They have arrived; it seems Nosty meant something else. They've come and are forming a battle formation; perhaps we are already surrounded. But we absolutely cannot lose now. We might die, but we cannot be afraid; this is how we've come this far."
Duan Shuai instinctively swallowed hard as his pupils flickered with uncertainty. Upon seeing an unexpected situation unfold, he quickly made the most reasonable explanation: first protect his team members on the outside and shield those without combat ability. Perhaps Duan Shuai wasn't very strong himself, but at this moment, his actions were quite sensible.
The Strongman burst into laughter; despite being stared at by many people, he showed no signs of embarrassment and laughed loudly while deliberately letting them hear his conversation. He said nonchalantly, "Heh heh heh, count carefully; there are indeed fifteen of them. Let's leave a few who can fight so I can spar with them. The remaining girl is yours; these people are so weak they can't even sense our killing intent. They must be trash who haven't activated their Gene Lock yet—what a disgrace! We need to clear them out now; if there are such useless teammates on the battlefield, I would definitely eliminate them from the front line."
The Loli held a nail clipper in her hand and meticulously trimmed her nails until they were perfectly rounded before she was satisfied. She smiled and said, "You can keep all of them for yourself; just leave that girl for me. I like red things—blood will make perfect nail dye for me. Just knock them out; it's up to you."
"Uh, you're still the same as ever. By the way, Commander, should we leave the consciousness of those two Telepaths intact?"
"Mm." The Purple-Haired Loli nodded slightly. "That would be best; keeping them for Commander is pointless anyway. Our Commander hates trouble the most; if we ask him to deal with it and he finishes cleaning up after them, then he'll turn around and clean us up too. So let's not create trouble for ourselves—understood, Dute?"
After saying this, the Loli patted the Strongman's shoulder. He immediately dropped like a cannonball to the ground, sending stones flying everywhere. Then she covered her mouth and stepped out from the dust cloud while the Strongman got up from the ground and scratched his head before slowly following her.
