After the queue ended, the Candidate Hunters were led into an indoor plaza, their curiosity piqued as they looked around. The plaza was quite spacious; even if a thousand more people entered, there would still be ample room for them to settle.
After a while, a young man with long hair and a youthful appearance stepped forward. It was hard to tell his age. Besides being a hunter, he resembled an actor or a model. He looked at the seasoned elites before him and smiled slightly, saying, "The number of hunter positions is quite limited; only one session is held each year. Therefore, if you encounter any physical issues during the upcoming selection process, you can choose to withdraw or forfeit. This way, you won't lose your life. Compared to losing your life, dignity and honor become mere words. The work and missions of a hunter are inherently dangerous, and I believe you all have considered this before coming here. Allow me to introduce myself; I am Xuanfeng, the chief instructor for this round from the Soldier-Level Hunter Team, numbered 0011. If you have any questions, feel free to ask now, and I will answer them within reasonable limits."
The Candidate Hunters were all participants in this session. Having received the Invitation Letter, they were likely exceptional talents in their respective fields. However, this was not like military or school entrance exams; it was similar in that they were competing for a few available spots amidst fierce competition.
The candidates exchanged glances but soon voiced their concerns. From their comprehensive questions, Freyr learned the true purpose of the assessment: this was the third selection process for hunters aimed at forming a team of elites to complete assigned missions as effectively as possible. Consequently, the conditions set by the Hunter Association were quite stringent—only 15 positions were available. The final four candidates could choose trusted companions as partners based on their preferences.
In other words, aside from the participants, the Hunter Association also indicated that many individuals in society who had not received an Invitation Letter would still undergo testing. Those who passed would be added as candidates to the team. This was intended to assess whether they qualified to become professional hunters. If their abilities did not meet the average level required for hunters, they could still be removed from the team later on. Additionally, each year’s outstanding candidates would be incorporated into existing Hunter Teams to ensure coordination and genuine fairness in competition.
Each Hunter Team starts at the Soldier-Level Hunter Team. Aside from the team leader, it can accommodate around five additional members. Upon advancing to the Soldier-Level Hunter Team, not only do team benefits increase, but there is also a cap on team members. The highest rank is the Royal Hunter Team, which offers special benefits allowing leaders or top performers to join teams permanently if invited. If accepted, they could become lifelong members of the Royal Hunter Team, enjoying higher-tier benefits starting from one month onward.
Instructor Xuanfeng took a deep breath, revealing signs of fatigue as he faced an onslaught of questions. Once no one else seemed willing to ask anything further, he smiled lightly and continued, "Is there no one else with questions? Then we shall begin the first assessment."
The Candidate Hunters gazed at Xuanfeng's calm smile. Shortly after, a group of armored warriors emerged beside him, with one leading warrior pushing out a cart. Although its purpose was unclear, everyone remained silent as they watched the cart approach and come to a stop before the instructor.
Freya thought to herself: "Could it be that we are about to enter into a melee right from the start?"
However, she could not know what was on Xuanfeng's mind. As he gently lifted the curtain covering the box on the cart and gestured for it to be brought forward one by one, he pulled out plastic card stickers from inside. He tore off one end of each sticker and affixed it to his left chest before repeating this process until every candidate had a card stuck on their chest with a number written on it.
Freyr tugged at his card forcefully but found it nearly impossible to remove it completely. Noticing many anxious and confused expressions among them, Xuanfeng turned and smiled reassuringly: "Alright then! The assessment begins now! First up is the intelligence assessment phase. After ten minutes, a list will be posted on the bulletin board under General. Those whose numbers match will enter their respective examination rooms. As your instructor for this round, I will evaluate your intelligence through an open-book written test. Scores will be ranked from highest to lowest; those in the bottom hundred will immediately lose their qualification for this round."
The number on Freyr's card was 79—fairly high—while Xiong Tai had 80. There was a strong possibility they would be assigned to the same examination room. However, this was merely preliminary reasoning; although Freyr had consistently performed well in written tests, he feared encountering ambiguous questions that could lead to confusion—those were always troublesome since each choice could leave one's mind paralyzed or trapped in dead ends.
Additionally, there was the issue with Xiong Tai. Although his grades in college had always been decent, by his own admission, he only studied a few questions before exams to get by. When it came to topics beyond the theoretical question bank, Xiong Tai might not even possess some basic knowledge that a university student should have.
Xiong Tai paced back and forth anxiously, then suddenly stopped, his emotions in turmoil. "Oh no, I really didn't expect to have to take an exam before becoming a hunter. What am I going to do? I'm not afraid of exams, but I dread answering questions. If there's someone monitoring us, I'll be even more nervous. But Freyr, you should be fine; exams have always been your strong suit."
Freyr glanced at Xiong Tai and thought how naive he was. He immediately spoke up, "Well, I'm at a loss too. Didn't you understand the rules? The bottom hundred are eliminated directly. It's not just a few dozen; it's one hundred at a time. Among those people are elites from various fields. Even though I just came out of the Barracks, seeing this situation makes my legs feel weak. I never considered whether I could advance to the next round; I might be heading home soon."
"Ah, isn't that terrible? I think it's better to forfeit," Xiong Tai exclaimed in surprise, drawing the attention of others around them.
"We've come this far; we might as well give it a try. Besides, they said the exam content isn't very difficult. It might not even be about the grades themselves; perhaps there's something else going on."
As soon as he finished speaking, Xiong Tai's heart sank again, and he continued pacing back and forth, seemingly unable to figure out what to do. Just then, the same warrior from earlier approached with a notice and posted it at the front of the area. "Within twenty minutes, follow your assigned number and enter the designated examination area. If you miss the time limit or fail to find your examination room—even if it's just one minute late—our instructors will not allow you entry, and you will immediately lose your qualification to advance." With that, the warrior walked away calmly.
