Perhaps, this time there were still some who patiently observed them from the shadows.
After waiting for half an hour, the scattered and disoriented examiners began to complain. It was clear they were being treated like pathogens, isolated and left to wait for the President to come and lecture them. The doors of the Classroom Hall were firmly shut, and they noticed a strange, mysterious black substance had appeared on the walls, with a deep groove running along it.
Only after seeing this did they realize that entry and exit depended on permissions. Once they entered, there was no way out because they lacked the necessary clearance. They had no idea how long they would have to wait. Among the remaining group of three or four, a boy pulled out a deck of cards from his pocket and said with a smile, "Let’s play some poker while we wait."
"How can you think about playing poker at a time like this? We're trapped here! The key point is that nobody knows we're here except for the Atet Examiner. That's what really matters!" another older examiner shouted, his words only deepening the gloom in the room.
The boy smiled slightly and began to shuffle the cards. "I'll deal!" In an instant, he swiftly divided the deck into four piles and chose the one closest to him.
"Whatever, let’s just play," one of them replied.
The mood lightened among those watching; there was no point in rushing. They had plenty of time to rest, which would surely be a long wait. If this was part of their assessment, they couldn’t afford to show too many flaws. Impatience was a major taboo in dealing with situations like this. Playing cards could help ease their minds but also risked focusing too much on one thing.
Among the three playing cards were an older man, a lively Loli Girl, and a scheming fatty who was often disliked by others. The one in control was the boy.
As they played, their voices grew louder, while the other three sat quietly in their spots, gazing out at the scenery outside. Their emotions gradually settled down; although they wouldn’t let the noisy environment disturb their peace, if things escalated, none among them could match the older man's intensity.
In another corner of the Classroom Hall sat someone else, huddled in darkness with a gloomy expression fixed ahead. Even their breathing sounded eerie, mixed with ghostly chuckles that made everyone feel uneasy.
Freyr sat alone in the front row, cradling his head in his hands to calm his mind and take advantage of this rare moment of relaxation to let his emotions unwind and catch a brief rest.
After some time had passed, suddenly the door swung open with a swish.
A disheveled old man with white hair entered, striding into the Classroom Hall with a certain swagger. He slammed a bucket of chilled whiskey onto the podium.
A pungent odor of alcohol wafted through the air, causing everyone to pause what they were doing and turn their attention to the podium. How could such an unkempt old man have the authority to enter freely? Could he be the President mentioned by the Atet Examiner?
"It's great to see you all, truly wonderful! Before we proceed, please bear with me for a moment while I finish what's in my mouth," he said, reaching for a steaming piece of tofu from a platter and tossing it into his mouth. He then uncorked the whiskey bottle and gulped down half of it.
Watching this display of bravado, the Examiners felt their foreheads tighten, silently wishing they had a more conventional trainer instead.
After finishing his meal and letting out a hearty belch, the old drunkard set down the bottle and wiped his mouth with a finely crafted cloth. Clearing his throat, he smiled slightly and said, "Thank you for your patience. I am Hilbert Kinraven, the President of the Hunter Association. You can just call me Hilbert; I prefer when young people use my name."
"Also, to the seven Hunters present who passed the assessment, originally, the final round was supposed to select ten candidates from those who participated in the previous round. However, due to some unexpected events during combat, only you seven remain. We were just discussing this matter earlier; now I need to introduce something very important. This time, we will make an exception and select three additional candidates to fill the ten slots."
After formally introducing himself, the crowd's perception of the old drunkard began to shift slightly.
Noticing that the Examiners were staring blankly with no other reactions, Hilbert chuckled heartily and clapped his hands twice. At that moment, three more individuals entered through the door.
Instantly, everyone's attention shifted to the newcomers. The three individuals did not appear well; they were being pushed in on wheelchairs. However, judging by the smiles on those accompanying them, they seemed to be in relatively good spirits and would likely be able to walk again soon.
Freyr glanced at the three entering figures and furrowed his brow upon recognizing one familiar face: Xiong Tai's head was completely wrapped like a mummy in white bandages, leaving only one nostril exposed for breathing.
Xiong Tai was not as robust as one might imagine; he appeared incredibly fragile. The head is particularly vulnerable, and even from a distance, one could smell the medicinal scent wafting from beneath the bandages.
Hilbert observed the dazed expressions of the Examiners below and sighed contentedly before continuing with a smile, "I believe you all recognize them. Let me introduce Xiong Tai, Wu Hua, and Xiao Qiang. They are all excellent and promising Examiners. We've lost quite some time checking their injuries; after our discussions, I am increasingly convinced that their future development will be very promising."
A disdainful voice echoed from below. At first, it was just a discordant hum from one person, but soon the sound became even more peculiar. This scruffy old man must be joking with us; aside from his words, he offered no other example of conduct. It was too hasty—how could someone like him be the President of the Hunter Association?!
The man sitting on the President's throne should be one of the strongest at the top! Yet the aura emanating from this old drunkard felt like a corrupting mold, spreading its influence.
Returning to the matter at hand, the people below felt a sudden twitch in their eyelids, reluctant to admit how true this guy's words were. However, in pursuit of the honor of being a hunter and the immense wealth and benefits that only a select few could attain, they kept their thoughts to themselves and continued to engage in superficial conversation.
Most of the Examiners wore grim expressions, their faces serious and solemn, showing little interest in what bizarre developments might follow.
Hilbert let out a lazy yawn and glanced over the Examiners below, his eyes shining with an understanding that most people would not easily perceive.
"Since everyone is here, let's begin our lesson!"
