The army of Zaleth had completely grasped the situation on the battlefield. At this moment, Menechdar's capable command managed to withdraw the desperate Medusa legion without any casualties. However, despite the assurance of the Zaleth army's offensive efficiency, it still relied on the selfless dedication of another legion.
"Leave the defense to me. I won't let them get within an inch of you. The offense is up to Zaleth, while my brothers will handle the defense." A young man with a notably pale complexion stood respectfully, waving his hand in the air, causing a stone corridor to materialize not far away.
When the other hunters saw the slowly rising stone corridor, they couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. It was important to note that this was not a feat accomplished by just one person; it was a manifestation of virtual material into reality, something that only hunters with Manifestation Ability could achieve. However, the more surreal something was, the harder it was to replicate. This stone corridor was not an ordinary one; it was a maze that was easy to enter but difficult to exit, with walls that were nearly indestructible.
The maze created was called the Phantom Maze, standing over six meters tall. Even the most seasoned spider would struggle to climb over it, as they would have to navigate through several walls before escaping. Moreover, there were also long-range bombardments from the Zaleth army, providing a solid layer of protection for their forces.
While a direct assault aligned with the hunters' spirit of valor, war was no game; excessive casualties would render their training efforts futile. Menech understood that this battle required cunning rather than brute force. If they were at the very front lines, mere obstacles wouldn't suffice against the Zerg, which was not easily dealt with.
The Medusa legion suffered heavy losses in direct confrontations. If a clash were inevitable, Menech would only trust those legions he deemed reliable for such an approach. The Cloya Legion was well-equipped; its selected hunters were undoubtedly elite individuals with extensive experience from numerous missions and were thus suitable for critical assignments.
The third trench was not easily manageable. The number of confronting spiders far exceeded those at the Second Trench. Not only were elite members of the Hunter Association stationed there, but most soldiers from the Military Department were also tightly defending Trench Three. The Mecha Association's ace unit and the sounds of Sparrow Missiles bombing continuously filled the air. Unfortunately, this time there were simply too many spiders, and they did not advance in a crowded manner.
Each spider acted independently; thus, while bombarding them might seem effective, it often lacked sufficient impact against individual targets. Most of those killed by Sparrow Missiles were large-sized spiders.
In front of Trench Position Three, Cloya Legion confronted spiders that outnumbered them several times over. Every minute saw four to five members injured. Fortunately, Kloya's Hunter Team did not suffer severe casualties; most bore minor wounds with only a few seriously injured.
So far, most of the dead had been soldiers from the Military Department—not because Kloya intended for them to perish in battle but due to their inadequate quality. A few thrusts from spider spears could inflict serious injuries on one to three soldiers due to their slow reflexes. However, this was not a reason they couldn't afford to lose.
Despite experiencing continuous casualties, the soldiers remained high-spirited. The combination of Nuclear Landmines and Gauss Sniper Rifles alongside Submachine Guns alleviated some pressure on Kloya's Hunter Team.
"Brothers of First Battalion," he rallied, "we can die in battle, but we cannot die so easily that those behind us step over our bodies! We will not become obstacles for our comrades; let’s blow these Stink Bugs to pieces!"
The weight setting of the Nuclear Landmine was calibrated to the lightest weight of a child and the heaviest weight of an adult. A swarm of Juvenile Spiders inadvertently stumbled into the minefield, and the sound of a nuclear explosion thundered through the air.
The entire mountain range trembled, and soil and rocks cascaded down, burying everything in their path. However, aside from the spiders that were directly hit by the explosion, those buried under the debris were not significantly harmed.
The spiders crawled out from beneath the layers of earth. Despite the immense damage caused by the Nuclear Landmine, a considerable number of spiders survived. Additionally, those that had not been hit by the mines but were buried under the rubble soon emerged. Before long, they became targets for snipers on the soldiers' side. The highly trained snipers in the military could eliminate powerful creatures from over a kilometer away with a single bullet.
The Gauss Sniper Rifle represented the pinnacle of sniper equipment, its sound breaking the sound barrier. Juvenile Spiders were torn apart by bullets; although members of the Zerg possessed remarkable vitality, even if split in two, they still had about thirty seconds to live. For humans, such a timeframe would only allow for desperate prayers to God. It was almost unfathomable that such creatures could retain such strong life force even after their hearts were destroyed.
Frustratingly, there were also those exaggeratedly large Giant Spiders. Their massive bodies and tenacious life force made them formidable opponents, especially with their fierce protective instincts. Even when struck directly by a Nuclear Landmine, they only sustained minor injuries. They could withstand the pressure from Sniper Rifle projectiles, and concentrated firepower merely sparked off their exoskeletons as if it were made of metal.
Fortunately, as the battle dragged on for several hours, the number of these Giant Spiders had significantly decreased. It seemed that as spiders matured, their numbers dwindled. The most ruthless aspect was humanity's methods; regardless of other types of spiders, they needed to address the problems posed by the larger ones first.
The large spiders managed to evade the concentrated bombardment from Sparrow Missiles. The Mecha Association's mechs primarily relied on ammunition to be effective; each loading cycle took two units of time before they could unleash a barrage of firepower multiple times. Each launch reduced their available ammunition.
Moreover, Unit Zero operated mainly on power engines and required substantial energy for charging. By now, it was rare to see Unit Zero flying again, let alone address its critical flaw in missile capacity.
The elegant nobleman Kloya gently closed a hardcover golden book in his arms and pointed decisively ahead with his finger. "There’s nothing else needed; just one note: don’t die—now charge!"
In just a few words, he ignited the morale of the hunting army beside him. The hunters drew various weapons while Kloya himself bore none; his only weapon was that book. After ensuring his comrades were ready, he heard his bones crack as he propelled himself forward.
He surged four or five meters ahead at an astonishing speed when suddenly four or five Juvenile Spiders appeared out of nowhere, igniting chaos in their wake. With a series of popping sounds, they fell one after another behind his swift movements.
